00:00 We are live from Skagnes, from Tower Gardens, where the community planting day is underway.
00:08 Steve Larney, you're the town clerk. It must be a proud day for you.
00:12 It is, we've been planning it for some while now and we're really lucky today. We've got
00:18 the sunshine, it's warm and we've got plenty of people turned out to do some planting.
00:23 Now tell me about the area where this planting is taking place.
00:26 Right, it's a sensory area that's being built around the existing bandstand by Tower Gardens
00:33 Pavilion in Tower Gardens. We've got planting which will develop over the coming years to
00:42 form a real sensory feature so that people of all abilities, all needs can experience
00:51 the gardens, which is what we want. We've also got some musical instruments in there.
00:56 You can hear in the background.
00:58 You can indeed. So we've got a sort of like a trestle type device that sits in the ground
01:07 that people can stand on or wheelchair users can use and it creates a whistle sound in
01:13 different notes so you can actually sort of play some music. And we've also got some metal
01:22 flowers that sound a bit like oil drums, you know, sort of that Caribbean sound to them.
01:29 So that's going to be quite exciting to hear that over the coming weeks and months.
01:33 They're clearly going to be very popular, aren't they?
01:36 They were, well, they're being played with now.
01:38 So where have the plants actually come from today?
01:41 Well, the plants have come from a company called West Lindsey Landscapes. They're a
01:51 subcontractor of Tomlinson's, who are the main contractor.
01:54 Yeah, it's all going, it's live. We've got people working here so we don't want to interrupt
02:02 that. So we'll just come over to Tomlinson's, who are the contractors for this. Is this
02:07 an unusual project for you?
02:09 It is a little unusual, yeah. Yeah, it is a bit. Especially with the work on the pond
02:14 over in the gardens, it's not something we do that often, in all honesty.
02:18 Yeah, we'll go over and try and have a look at that later. But, you know, are you a local
02:25 company?
02:26 No, we're based over in Derby but we do a lot of work in Lincolnshire and in Skegness.
02:32 We built the building that you can see in the background three or four years ago now
02:36 for the Town Council, so it's great to be back here working with the Town Council.
02:39 So you've actually seen this site change over the years?
02:42 Yeah, absolutely. I remember coming back here in, what would have been 2018 I think, when
02:46 the old pavilion building was just still standing in the background. So yeah, we've managed
02:52 to work with the Town Council over the years and get the finale sat and build the new community
02:57 centre we've got now.
02:58 Yeah, it must be nice seeing it taking shape.
03:01 Yeah, absolutely.
03:02 So, we're just going to have a word with Heritage Lincolnshire, who have been working closely
03:06 with the Town Council on this project. It must be a special day for you as well.
03:10 Yeah, it's very exciting to have the community here to really get involved with the changes
03:15 that have been taking place. So, there's been scaffolding up and things taking place around
03:20 the town over the previous months and now people can really get involved and see the
03:24 changes that have been happening.
03:27 Now, the actual vision for Tower Gardens, because there's a lot of history here, isn't
03:33 it? Some people can still remember the old pavilion and there was quite a lot of sadness
03:38 when that had to go, but it was in a very poor state. We've now got the new town hall
03:45 and the cafe there. This is the next step, but you're still holding on to the heritage,
03:52 aren't you, of this site?
03:53 Yeah, it's really special to be able to have that link to the past, but also make sure
03:54 that Tower Gardens is usable, useful and enjoyable for people in the future as well.
04:05 There's a lot of excitement here, so I think that's going to work really well. Okay, so
04:10 it looks like somebody here is going to be getting busy. Steve, we'll come back to you
04:18 later. We'll have a little look at some of the other work that's being done.
04:30 Okay, well thank you. Thanks for that introduction and we'll be back later to see what it looks
04:36 like when it's finished.
