00:44 Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:45 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:48 We begin with the news.
00:50 Peru is moving to a new institutional crisis after President Nina Bologna's residence
00:55 was searched.
00:56 Premier Gustavo Adriánsen called for an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers.
01:02 The procedure ordered by the Prosecutor's Office in the House of the President in the
01:06 District of Surquillo was completed in the last few hours.
01:11 As we have reported in our news day, it corresponds to an investigation for her purchase of luxury
01:17 watches and jewels.
01:19 The Prime Minister confirmed that the President is at the Government Palace, where a commission
01:23 of the Public Prosecutor's Office arrived shortly before.
01:27 In view of this serious situation, Congressman Carlos Anderson did not rule out the possibility
01:32 of removing the President from office.
01:40 The Bolivian government sent a greeting message to Venezuela over the July presidential elections.
01:46 In an official communique issued on Saturday, La Paz convened its Latin American and revolutionary
01:51 greetings to the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela, its people and its President Nicolás
01:57 Maduro.
01:58 The note also expressed the Bolivian government's concern over the threats and actions by some
02:03 far-right organizations to destabilize the Venezuelan pulse and its political system.
02:09 On the other hand, it urges Washington to respect Venezuela's self-determination and
02:14 independence and to refrain from any interference in its internal issues.
02:25 In this context, Venezuela's Foreign Minister Iván Gil thanked the Government of Bolivia
02:30 for its greeting to the atmosphere in the Bolivarian nation ahead of the presidential
02:34 elections of next July 28, its concern due to the threats and actions by the extreme
02:40 right-wing and its demand for the US to respect Venezuela's self-determination.
02:53 In Uruguay, the number of dengue fever rises to over 200 cases after the return of tourists
02:58 into the country.
02:59 The Ministry of Public Health reported that studies have revealed 224 cases, of which
03:05 113 are autochthonous and 111 imported, including cases of chikungunya and two of zika.
03:13 He also explained that Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay are the countries importing dengue
03:17 fever in 95% of all patients.
03:21 Health authorities warn about the probability that some people are suffering from the disease
03:26 and do not have a positive laboratory result, as 75% of the cases are asymptomatic.
03:38 The Government of Honduras announced that it will subsidize the increasing electricity
03:43 rates starting in the second quarter of 2024 as part of the initiatives implemented by
03:48 the state to support the population.
03:50 The Regulatory Commission of Electric Energy stated that the entity is forced to make trimesterly
03:56 adjustments to the base cost of generation and the tariffs of distribution companies.
04:02 In this sense, the Government approved the adjustment to the base cost of generation
04:06 for a value of $153.78 effective for the second quarter that begins on April 1 and ends on
04:15 the end of June.
04:16 In percentage terms, this means a slight increase of 3.45%, which will not be reflected in the
04:23 bills thanks to the subsidy from the executive headed by President Xiomara Castro.
04:34 In Ecuador, the consulman of San Borondón, Julio Ronquillo, was found dead after his
04:38 kidnapping last Thursday in Huayes.
04:41 The death of the consulman was confirmed by leaders of the Citizen Revolution Party and
04:45 by the prefecture.
04:46 However, the police authorities have not yet pronounced themselves on the crime.
04:52 It should be noted that Ronquillo is the second member of the political coalition to be murdered
04:57 this month after the assassination of Major Brigitte Garcia last March 24.
05:02 Since last January 8, the Government of Daniel Navoa ordered a state of exception until next
05:08 April 8 in order to face the security crisis that the country is going through.
05:18 In Haiti, armed violence threatens child safety and education due to school closures in its
05:24 capital Port-au-Prince.
05:26 According to data from the United Nations Organization, these clashes between criminal
05:30 gangs have caused the forced displacement of some 360,000 citizens, half of whom are
05:36 minors.
05:37 Meanwhile, social organizations and Haiti's health ministry warned that the Caribbean
05:42 island suffers the highest level of infant mortality in the Western Hemisphere, in large
05:48 extent because of the violence prevailing in the country, which prevents proper medical
05:52 care of children.
05:54 It is known as well that gangs and criminal groups in Haiti have taken control of the
05:58 main ports and roads in Port-au-Prince.

06:20 Welcome back.
06:50 The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, assures that they could be forced to withdraw
06:54 step by step from the battlefront.
06:57 This is what he stated on Friday during an interview with the American media Washington
07:02 Post.
07:03 The Ukrainian president assured that if there's no American support, it means that we will
07:08 go back, we will withdraw step by step, by ratifying that this is a war more from Washington
07:14 than from Caif, reiterating that without air defence, without Patriots missiles and electronic
07:20 warfare and artillery inhibitors, they would not be able to continue on the battlefront.
07:26 However, and despite the changes in equipment and strategies, Caif cannot convince the Republican
07:31 Congress, who keep for the moment the tap closed.
07:41 In Russia, the armed forces neutralised an attempt of terrorist attack and captured three
07:46 foreign suspects from Central Asia.
07:48 The Federal Security Service reported that the criminals planned to detonate a device
07:53 in a public area of Stavropol region.
07:56 During the investigations, homemade explosive device fragments and chemicals were found
08:01 in the house of one of the three suspects.
08:04 This comes within the context of the terrorist attack that took place a week ago at the Krokus
08:10 concert hall outside Moscow, which claimed the lives of at least 144 people.
08:38 In the middle of the most brutal genocide in modern history, the 48th anniversary of
08:43 Palestinian land day is celebrated.
08:47 The Commission of Resistance to the Wall and Settlements says that Israel has stolen more
08:52 than 2,800 kilometres of territory.
08:55 Moajed Shaban, head of the Commission, also reported that the occupant has started establishing
09:00 blocking zones around the colonies.
09:03 This Palestinian organisation has registered a total of 52 structural plans oriented to
09:09 build 8,829 colonial units on an area equivalent to 6,852 acres.
09:17 On one Earth Day, Palestine was surrounded by the murders of more than 32,000 people.
09:30 The people of Yemen also mobilised in support of Palestinians in Sanaa, the capital city,
09:36 and 14 other provinces across the nation.
09:38 The demonstrators asserted that Palestine is a priority for the people of Yemen and
09:43 therefore reject those who remain silent in the face of the genocide carried out by Israel
09:49 against the citizens of Gaza.
09:51 The Yemenis also warned the United States and the United Kingdom that any adventure
09:56 against their territory will be strongly repelled by thousands of Muslim combatants.
10:08 In Cuba, Palestinian land day is commemorated with several solidarity demonstrations and
10:13 calls for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
10:16 A political and cultural event will be held this Sunday at the headquarters of the Cuban
10:21 Institute of Friendship with the Peoples on the occasion of the aforementioned commemoration.
10:27 This event takes place in support of the Palestinian cause in the middle of the tragic circumstances
10:33 they are currently going through in light of the intensification of genocide, ethnic
10:38 cleansing, forced displacement and a war of hunger that the world never witnessed before.
10:43 Since October 7th, 2023, the Israeli occupation has murdered over 32,000 Palestinians in the
10:50 face of international rejection and in complicity with the United States.
10:55 Cuba advocates for peace in the occupied territories based on the creation of two states that will
11:01 allow the Palestinian people to be free from Tel Aviv's aggression.
11:11 In Palestine, the health situation is worsening in the Gaza Strip.
11:14 Shortage of basic supplies leads to increases in hepatitis cases and higher risk of infections.
11:21 More details in the following report.
11:25 The Palestinian population in Gaza is currently facing high sanitary risks due to the devastation
11:31 caused by the ravages of the attacks and the destruction of most of its hospital centers,
11:36 combined with the scarcity of basic supplies such as food, water and fuel.
11:41 The word misery is not enough, the word suffering is not enough, the word trade is not enough.
11:50 These people have never fallen.
11:52 It has always had its head held high from its beginnings, from its ancestors, its great-great
11:58 grandparents and grandparents and all its generation.
12:01 We only bow down before our God.
12:03 We only kneel in our place of prayer.
12:06 Our suffering starts from childhood.
12:08 My child suffers, my neighbor's child suffers, my partner's child in the tent suffers.
12:13 Besides, the environmental situation is extremely deteriorating.
12:16 Here the children have intestinal infections every day.
12:20 There are all kinds of diseases.
12:22 Hepatitis has proliferated in an impressive way.
12:25 There are 20,000 to 30,000 cases.
12:29 At least 1.5 million citizens are refugees in the border town of Rafah.
12:34 Cramped into United Nations educational centers and improvised tents.
12:40 I was displaced four months ago to Dahi, then from Dahi to Hanjanice and then from Hanjanice
12:46 to Rafah.
12:47 That is to say that I am displaced several times.
12:50 Life here is very, very hard for us.
12:53 Later, the heat will come and may God help us.
12:57 I call on all the Arab countries to support us and to stop this injustice that is being
13:02 committed against us, because we are really tired of it.
13:06 Our situation is too difficult.
13:08 There is no food or medicine or anything.
13:11 There are no basic elements to survive.
13:14 Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice on Thursday ordered Israel to ensure without
13:20 delay the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
13:25 According to the UN's highest court, Tel Aviv must take all necessary and effective
13:29 measures to ensure the unimpeded provision of basic services and humanitarian aid.

14:14 Welcome back.
14:41 The government of Peru delivers a shipment of humanitarian aid to families affected by
14:46 an avalanche caused by the heavy rains registered in the last days.
14:50 The National Defense Institute reported that over 35 families were affected after the destruction
14:55 of more than 30 houses in San Juan Bautista municipality following the heavy rains that
15:01 triggered a creek and caused a landslide that affected several villages.
15:06 While the emergency is still ongoing, the local municipality delivered humanitarian
15:10 aid to the regional government to be distributed among those affected.
15:14 Meanwhile, meteorological authorities issued warnings in view of forecasts indicating upcoming
15:19 rainfall with moderate to heavy intensity levels in the central and southern highlands
15:25 of the country.
15:32 On Friday, the European Union decided to remove Israel from hosting the European Gymnastics
15:37 Championship because of the situation in Gaza.
15:40 The artistic gymnastics competition was to be held for the 11th time in Israel and was
15:46 scheduled for May 13, 2025.
15:50 In this sense, the organizer opened the application process for new candidacies, which will be
15:55 available until April 23 of this year.
15:59 In addition to this suspension, the International Gymnastics Federation also cancelled the rhythmic
16:05 gymnastics challenge World Cup, scheduled to be held next June in Jerusalem.
16:15 We keep talking about sports because Japanese swimmer Hikako Aiki has qualified for Paris
16:21 2024 as a leukemia survivor.
16:24 The 23-year-old swimmer was diagnosed in 2018 and was hospitalized for 10 months, returning
16:30 to compete during 2020.
16:32 However, she failed to qualify for the last edition of the Olympic Games in her home country.
16:37 However, in Paris 2024 she will be part of the Japanese delegation after securing her
16:42 quota in the 100m butterfly style category, with a time of 57.34 seconds in her competition.
16:55 With four months to go before the Olympic Games, Apollo's fountain at the Palace of
16:59 Versailles is back in use after two years of extensive restoration work.
17:04 The Palace of Versailles is due to host the equestrian events at the Paris Olympic and
17:09 Paralympic Games this summer.
17:11 Restored main gate and Apollo, test and training arenas, cross-country track and gigantic grandstands,
17:18 the shuttle the Versailles is putting out all the stops to host the equestrian events
17:22 of the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.
17:26 With 119 days to go before the Olympics, the main entrance gate to the Château, which
17:31 was visited by 8 million tourists last year, is still partially clad in a glittering mantle
17:37 covering the very end of its restoration project, scheduled to mark the Palace's 400th anniversary
17:44 in 2023.
17:51 The work is called the Chariot of the Sun, although it is also known as the Fountain
17:56 of Apollo, its main protagonist who emerges from the waters of the pond in his chariot
18:02 drawn by four horses.
18:04 Pathéon also appears represented at the feet of the horses.
18:08 It is one of the most important pieces of the 55 fountains that decorate the gardens
18:14 of the Palace of Versailles.
18:15 The Chariot of the Sun or Fountain of Apollo perfectly reveals the theatrical concept of
18:21 these baroque gardens and has become one of the most iconic images of the monumental ensemble
18:27 of Versailles.
18:33 Caracas takes to the stage with Venezuela's International Progressive Theatre Festival,
18:38 an event that unites culture with solidarity.
18:41 Let's see the details with our correspondent Gladys Casal.
18:45 From March 22nd to March 31st, Caracas hosted the International Progressive Theatre Festival
18:52 of Venezuela.
18:53 Among the main venues was San Agustín, one of the most popular areas of the Venezuelan
19:00 capital.
19:01 Its theatre, La Arameda, lent its stage for a singular play for its spectators.
19:26 This is The Knights of Significance, a Barbadian play in two acts that recreates first the
19:32 kidnapping of Africans, the dispossession of their culture, and then the rebellion of
19:38 Busa, a historical passage of the anti-slavery deeds in the island.
19:44 With a minimal scenography and live music, 12 actors interpret these events.
19:50 In spite of the language barriers, for them it is crucial to bring their message to the
19:55 Venezuelan lands.
19:58 We don't take many opportunities to explore the linkages between our history and I think
20:04 this play was a great opportunity for us to do just that, to tell the public that, "Hey,
20:11 listen, we have been through the same thing."
20:13 We both have characters, individuals who would have fought for the emancipation, either from
20:20 colonial slave masters or from imperialist systems.
20:25 General Busa sought to do so for the enslaved in Barbados, like Simón Bolívar from Venezuela
20:32 as he sought to liberate Venezuela from Spanish control.
20:38 The play, although simple, contains codes of negritude and blackness shared by the Caribbean
20:44 and Latin America.
20:46 Those behind production know very well the value of every detail.
20:52 Stitching together the play with the music of Africa, fused with the music of Barbados,
20:58 which is what was created through the slave society in Barbados, was very important to
21:02 me.
21:03 We have very, very, very similar history, but in different diasporas.
21:12 For Barbados and Venezuela to come together and build a tighter friendship, because that's
21:20 what's needed within the Latin American country and the Caribbean, we need to be one and not
21:25 just separate.
21:27 So this is a step towards that.
21:29 In spite of the language barriers, this performance achieved its goal, to bring together two peoples
21:35 with common struggles, and this was its message.
21:39 Afterwards, it will go to Cuba to expand Caribbean brotherhood through the art.
