We've had the TVS Apache RTR 310 in our hands for 5-6 days, and we put it through the tests.
The short gear ratio helps on the City but makes it uncomfortable on the highways. The mileage we get on the motorcycle is fairly good, with the average being around 20kmpl after aggressively riding the bike.

00:00 So here with me is the TVS Apache RTR 310 and we've had the bike for the last five to
00:10 six days and we've ridden it all over, right from cities to highways, even inside gullies.
00:15 And today I'll be talking about how the bike actually performs in the city.
00:19 Welcome to Drivespark, I'm Vedant Johari and let's jump right into this review.
00:23 So now starting off with the front end of the motorcycle, so we get these very aggressively
00:36 styled headlamps in the front and as TVS claims, the design inspiration of the headlamp
00:42 and the rest of the motorcycle were all taken from a cyborg.
00:46 So the headlights that we have at night time when we're riding, it really gives you that
00:51 devil eye effect, something evil that's approaching you and that just enhances the whole aggressiveness,
00:58 the whole sportiness on the RTR 310.
01:01 Then moving on from the headlamps, we have these gold plated USD forks, 43mm forks and
01:08 when you're pressing the brakes or when you're going over the bumps, you really feel the
01:12 fork coming into use.
01:14 Now when you're braking hard, you do feel the front drop down and when you're going
01:18 over the bumps, you feel the fork taking up every single undulation on the road that we
01:24 feel.
01:25 So the tyres that we get in the front are 110/70/17 and these are Michelin Road 5 tyres,
01:31 W-rated tyres.
01:32 So now, as we move on from the motorcycle, the tank that we get features some super aggressive
01:40 cuts, right from the centre to the tank shrouds to literally everywhere on the tank, we have
01:46 a very, very nice design on the motorcycle.
01:50 Now, not only for design aesthetic, it also proves a functional purpose.
01:56 So when you're riding or when you're sitting on the motorcycle, the tank provides exceptional
02:02 grip for your legs for when you want to be in that proper riding position.
02:07 So now moving on to the chassis of the RTR 310, we get a lightweight trellis frame and
02:12 all your engine components are exposed.
02:14 So now as we can see, everything right from the casing to your head to the header, everything
02:22 is visible.
02:23 Now that also brings out a very nice sporty aesthetic for this motorcycle and the radiator
02:28 that we have, when you're looking at it up front, when you're looking at the bike from
02:32 the front view, it gives a very aerodynamic look and it also helps with the aero.
02:37 Also at the front, we get the exposed oil filter located right underneath the chassis.
02:42 So now the rear tyre that we get on the RTR 310 is a 150/60/17 and these are also the
02:48 Michelin Road 5 tyres.
02:50 So the rear suspension is a single monoshock which is preload adjustable and it is a little
02:55 on the stiffer side.
02:56 However, as you get more seat time on the motorcycle, you do get used to it after some
03:01 time.
03:02 So now let's talk about how this is for seating.
03:04 I'm seated on the motorcycle and when I was talking about the tank, I told you that it
03:09 provides exceptional grip for your legs.
03:13 So as you can see, if you're sitting on the bike, my legs go with, my legs go one with
03:19 the tank.
03:20 It does not seem out of place, I do not feel out of place and the tank doesn't seem too
03:24 big or too small.
03:26 It's just about the perfect size.
03:28 Now the footpegs, let's say, are a little neutral placed, but a little on the rear side
03:33 to give you that extra sportiness on the motorcycle.
03:36 On the whole rider's triangle that you can see, I, so personally for me, I enjoy sitting
03:43 right with the tank, with the whole front as it's a very front heavy motorcycle.
03:48 So as you can see, my feet are slightly rear set, my legs I'd say are in the perfect position
03:55 on the tank and I am sitting upright, but I do feel like I'm slightly aggressively set
04:03 and for me, personally, I enjoy that.
04:05 I don't like something that's too reclined or a very casual ride.
04:10 For me, this seating position I feel is perfect even for an everyday use or for highway usage.
04:16 So the RTR 310 also comes with climate control seats.
04:19 Now what is climate control seats you might be asking?
04:22 Well, it's nothing but a heating or cooling seat for you while you're riding.
04:27 Now in this hot summer in Bangalore or in India, when you're riding, you will feel your
04:32 butt warm up because of how hot it gets.
04:35 Now through our TFT, we can control the temperature of the seat.
04:39 You can either make it go colder or hotter based on your preference.
04:43 Now, once you enable it to cool down, you will feel it cooling after around 30 to 45
04:50 seconds.
04:51 Now if your bike is parked in the hot sun, once you switch it on, you need to wait for
04:56 at least a minute and a half to two minutes to actually feel the effects start coming
05:01 into play.
05:02 Now coming to your throttle, your handlebars, all the buttons on your handlebar.
05:07 So starting off with the buttons, the TFT controls, the tactile feel is really nice.
05:12 The buttons don't require too much effort to press and everything right from your horn
05:17 to your passing beam, it's all in hand's reach.
05:21 You don't need to bring your hand out of place to use anything.
05:25 So now for your throttle, brake and clutch levers, your brake and clutch levers are adjustable,
05:30 thankfully, so you can set it based on your preference.
05:34 So now the throttle system that we have is a throttle by wire and you do feel it.
05:39 So as soon as you're on the throttle, you do get the response from the engine.
05:43 However, one flaw that I did face on the throttle is when you're revving it hard and you shut
05:49 off, there's like a half a second lag before your revs start dropping.
05:54 As you keep riding the bike, as you get more seat time, you will get used to it.
05:58 However, for a first timer, it may throw them off guard when they really need to shut off
06:02 in an emergency situation.
06:04 So now talking about the RTR 310 on an everyday use.
06:09 So I've used the bike commuting to work, from work back to home, for night rides on the
06:14 highways, morning rides on the highways and through gullies, basically using it for everything.
06:22 Now what I found is that in the city, the RTR was amazing.
06:27 It's probably the perfect city bike.
06:31 The engine was super tractable, you could just hold third gear or fourth gear throughout
06:37 your whole ride, except for obviously when you come to a stop, but when you're in constant
06:42 motion, you don't need to keep shifting gears, just hold third or fourth and the bike is
06:45 more than happy.
06:46 Then in terms of handling, if you like sitting front set, like how I sit, it's super, super
06:53 manoeuvrable, you can just throw the bike into corners or like, or if you're riding
06:59 in between vehicles, you can put it to the left, to the right very, very easily.
07:05 Then engine really doesn't heat up that much, especially even in the peak sun that we're
07:11 in now, riding it in the city at what 435 in the evening through peak hour traffic,
07:18 you don't feel excess heat radiating from the engine.
07:21 That's where the radiator really plays its role.
07:25 It really cools down the engine a lot, it brings the temperature down quite a bit.
07:31 It's really not uncomfortable to ride.
07:33 Now coming to this bike on highways, that is where I feel the RTR lacks.
07:40 So it does have the power, it does have the speed, however, it lacks in terms of its gear
07:46 ratios, very, very, very short ratios.
07:51 So what I would normally feel like I'm on second on a regular bike, I feel like I'm
07:57 on first on this bike.
07:59 So what I feel like I'm on fifth or sixth on a regular bike, I feel like I'm on fourth
08:02 or fifth on this bike.
08:04 So when I'm cruising on the highways, when I'm doing, let's say, 100-120 kilometres per
08:10 hour, I'm looking for seventh gear.
08:12 Yeah, you heard that right.
08:13 I'm not satisfied with just sixth on this motorcycle.
08:16 When you're at 110 plus on sixth gear, you are in the power band of the engine.
08:22 When you're on sixth gear doing around 110-120, you are in the engine's power band.
08:28 Now, if you just want to hold that, you do feel uncomfortable because even with the slightest
08:34 increase in throttle, the bike just wants to go.
08:37 It just wants to take off.
08:39 So that's where I feel a seventh gear would come into handy or longer gear ratios would
08:45 come into handy, but that's not the case.
08:49 So we can't do anything about it, but that's not the case for this motorcycle.
08:53 So there's not much we can do.
08:55 Otherwise, if you're cornering the motorcycle aggressively, if you prefer counter-leaning
09:00 on the bike, or even if you prefer leaning properly by bringing your body out, you can
09:06 do anything on this.
09:07 I'll demonstrate that for you.
09:08 So if I'm counter-leaning, I'll be sitting on this side and there's still place on the
09:12 seat for me.
09:14 I'm not thrown off the seat, I'm not uncomfortable and if I'm leaning with my body also, as you
09:21 can see, I can get my butt off the seat and I'm still extremely comfortable.
09:26 I'm not falling off the bike, nor is the seat too large that I still have more seat to go.
09:32 So in terms of that, that was the whole seating posture for cornering and how the bike really
09:36 feels for your highway rides.
09:39 So when I'm cornering the motorcycle hard, if I want to get my body out, as you can see,
09:44 I'm getting it out and I still have more space, I'm not uncomfortable, I'm not falling off
09:50 the bike and the tank gives us perfect amount of grip for your thigh, whichever side you
09:58 need to lean the motorcycle.
09:59 So in terms of cornering, that was how this bike actually felt.
10:05 I was extremely satisfied with it.
10:08 So now with this bike coming in at 169kgs, it is relatively on the lighter side.
10:13 So you can really flick it around wherever you want, you can literally dance on this
10:17 motorcycle and you'll still feel comfortable.
10:21 So now coming to the technical specifications, or your engine specs to your seat height and
10:28 ground clearance.
10:29 Let's start with the seat height and ground clearance first.
10:31 I am 6'1" and I can comfortably place my feet on the ground flat.
10:38 Now the seat height of this is 800mm and the ground clearance is 180mm.
10:43 Now the seat height is a little on the higher side, so for a shorter rider, it may be a
10:47 little uncomfortable, but otherwise, once you're on the bike, you really don't feel
10:53 very high up.
10:55 Now for a 180mm ground clearance on a city bike, that's pretty good.
11:00 You don't find yourself bottoming out easily, you don't find yourself hitting potholes,
11:07 the bike clears whatever you need to go through.
11:09 Now coming to your engine specs.
11:18 This is powered by a 312cc liquid-cooled single cylinder engine.
11:23 This engine produces 35.1bhp in the sports mode, track mode and supermoto mode.
11:32 Now for your rain and urban modes, the engine produces 26.7bhp.
11:38 So now for the torque figures.
11:40 In sports, track and supermoto mode, this engine produces 28.7Nm and now for the slightly
11:47 more toned down modes, which is the rain and urban mode, this engine produces 27.3Nm of
11:54 torque.
11:55 Coming to the cons of the RTR 310.
11:59 Firstly, I'd start off with the headlights.
12:02 The throw of the headlights on a regular beam is very disappointing.
12:08 It's not a far throw, it's not a strong throw.
12:10 However, if you switch that into high beam, the story is completely different.
12:15 On low beam, the throw is a little bad, but on high beam, it's really good.
12:20 You can see far, everything is illuminated, the whole road is visible.
12:25 But how often do you find yourself using high beam?
12:28 And not only that, high beam for oncoming vehicles can be very unsafe.
12:33 So the low beam of this is something that TVS could actually work on.
12:37 Now the second con, I'd say, is the throttle.
12:40 I'd already spoken about this earlier, but I'll say it again.
12:44 When you're throttling it hard, and when you shut off the throttle, there's like a half
12:48 a second lag where the revs don't drop.
12:51 It stays up and then it drops.
12:54 So for a newcomer on the motorcycle, when they're riding it in the city, or even on
13:00 the highways, if they're riding it really hard on high revs, and suddenly there's something
13:06 pops up in front of them and they have to brake, they might get into a panic situation,
13:12 because they'll be shut off, but the bike will still accelerate for that extra half
13:16 a second.
13:17 Now, that could make or break a rider's ride.
13:20 The throttle response is something that, again, TVS can work on.
13:24 Now coming to the third con.
13:25 So now coming to the third con of the motorcycle, is the rear brakes.
13:32 Now in sport, track and supermoto mode, the rear brakes are completely fine.
13:36 However, on rain and urban, that's where the issue comes in.
13:39 The moment ABS comes into play, that's where the brakes get extremely weak.
13:44 So you might press the brake hard, but the bike will not slow down in proportion to how
13:49 hard you're braking.
13:50 At that time, when you're braking hard, you need to drop your gears, otherwise the bike
13:56 will not stop.
13:57 If you drop your gears and press the rear brakes, yes, the bike will come to a stop.
14:02 However, for most riders who only use brakes on rain and urban, it is a little sad.
14:08 Now, coming to the final con on the motorcycle, the next con is cruise control.
14:15 It doesn't, you can't just enable cruise control by the press of a button.
14:20 If you're on the fly, if you're on the highway, you need to press the cruise control button,
14:24 press the clutch and the brake for the cruise control to get engaged.
14:28 Now how convenient is that?
14:30 You guys tell me.
14:31 For me, that's not at all convenient and it honestly could be a bit of a hindrance, I'd
14:36 say, for me.
14:37 And not only that, another issue with the cruise control is, once you start the motorcycle,
14:42 if you're in a standstill and if you want to put the cruise control on, it has dynamic
14:46 cruise control, so you can set it based on how you're riding.
14:49 So if you're in a standstill, if you want to switch it on and then start riding, your
14:53 quick shifter gets deactivated.
14:55 Now don't ask me about the linkage of that, I also don't know, but that's what happens,
15:00 that's what we've noticed.
15:02 On a standstill, vehicle's on, press the cruise control button, your quick shifter stops working.
15:07 And then to engage it, even if you're in a standstill, you need to press the clutch,
15:11 brake and then engage the cruise control for it to work.
15:15 Now coming to the last and final con.
15:18 This is for the pillion riders.
15:21 Vibrations.
15:23 The vibrations on the footpeg are tremendous.
15:26 So after 5000 RPM, the vibrations on rear footpegs gets pretty hard to manage.
15:33 You literally feel like you've got a massage controller or something underneath your foot
15:38 and it's just going berserk.
15:39 How often you find yourself above 5000, on a regular basis, you don't.
15:45 But will you ever find yourself above 5000 RPM?
15:48 Yes, you will.
15:49 And you want to face vibration?
15:50 No, you don't.
15:52 So that is another place where TVS can work on.
15:57 But all in all, that was the TVS Apache RTR 310.
16:02 For me, I had a blast on the motorcycle.
16:05 I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it.
16:08 And as you keep riding it, you do get attached to the motorcycle and you do find yourself
16:12 overlooking the cons that I just mentioned.
16:15 So let us know what you think of the motorcycle and whether you guys would like to opt for one.
16:20 Now at a starting price of Rs 2.43 lakhs for the base variant, going up to the top end
16:30 price of Rs 2.64 lakhs, the RTR is one of the perfect city bikes that you can own.
16:37 Now, right from your climate control seats to how aggressive you can ride the motorcycle,
16:42 it has it all.
16:43 So let us know what you think of this motorcycle down in the comments below and whether you
16:49 would want to get your hands on the RTR 310.
16:52 Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe.
16:55 My name is Vedant Johari, signing out.
