Fynn Hudson Prentice on the Sussex CCC season ahead and hie hopes and aims for it - in conversation with Will Hugall
Transcript
00:00 What are your ambitions for 2024?
00:08 As a club we want to get promoted. I think that's the main ambition. Obviously a lot
00:12 of the lads have done a lot of work in white ball cricket this winter as well. So hopefully
00:17 have a good run in that. We've got a slightly different team than we have done in previous
00:21 years so there might be a few opportunities for some of the younger lads as well. We're
00:26 all looking forward to the season but the main ambition would be promotion, championship
00:30 cricket and then T20 and hopefully get into the final stages.
00:34 You were awarded your counter-cap at the end of last season. Are you being looked to by
00:41 Farbee as potentially a more senior player this season?
00:45 Hopefully. I've definitely been involved in some of the conversations about taking on
00:49 more of a leadership role in the team which is lovely. Been able to help some of the players
00:54 in our squad come through. We've obviously got a lovely young, talented squad. So yeah,
00:59 maybe a few more responsibilities but not too much from previous seasons. Just go about
01:04 my business, try and help the team as much as possible and if people need to chat about
01:08 things then I'm obviously going to be there.
01:10 You've had a rare winter where you haven't been too involved in cricket. What was the
01:17 main thinking behind that? You didn't want to stress yourself too much with it?
01:23 I went away to Australia quite a few times. Went away last winter so I played two summers
01:28 on the bounce just coming back from a stress fracture the year before. A lot of that was
01:32 just managing workloads, trying to make sure that I was ready to go this year. There's
01:37 been a few technical issues that I've had in my bowling over the last couple of years
01:40 since I had that stress fracture which I've been trying to iron out. So this winter was
01:43 sort of spending a bit more time getting those bits done and ready to go this season which
01:49 seems to be hopefully better than a lot more now. So those two pre-season games and that
01:53 trip to India everything felt a little bit more consistent. So fingers crossed we can
01:57 take that through the season.
02:00 In terms of the all-rounder stock, it is really growing at the club now. You're the spearhead
02:04 of that I would say but now we've got Danny Lamb coming in, Bertie who's going to be playing
02:08 a bit of an all-rounder role this season. How do you see the role of the all-rounders
02:12 in the team going forward?
02:13 We've obviously got Dan Ibrahim as well. We've got Archie Lennon who's a very final rounder
02:18 himself becoming a very good batter and good leg spin bowler. Danny's obviously improved
02:23 the squad massively just with his attitude as well as having high skill. So we've definitely
02:29 got a very strong group. There's plenty of lads as well down the order, people like Kass
02:33 who are very handy with the bat. There's obviously competition for places now as well which is
02:39 something that maybe in the last few years we haven't had as much of in Red Bull cricket.
02:44 So obviously that's going to naturally rise the standards of the group and our training
02:48 so far has been fantastic with that. Obviously with Danny coming in, learning from him a
02:52 few bits that he did at Lancashire, how they go about things as well. So Bertie having
02:56 a great winter overseas and Sidney being a player of the year in the grade comp over
03:00 there. So we've got very strong strength and depth and I think it's great for competition
03:05 for places and it means the whole standard will rise in the group.
03:07 Absolutely. I can imagine for yourself, it was a great season with the bat last year
03:11 but maybe a few things to work on with the ball. Looking over the winter and in the nets
03:16 just now since Jadon's arrived and watching Joffre as well, are you picking up a few tips
03:21 on pace from them?
03:22 I think I've sailed that ship. I think I'll let them do their thing and just try and focus
03:29 on what I can do. I think my main primary skill is probably consistency which I felt
03:32 like I lacked a lot of last year. Lost a lot of confidence from the T20 last year and I
03:37 think I started the season really well with the ball and from mid-May, June I sort of
03:42 lost a bit of that confidence. I've been doing a lot of work, working hard with JK, James
03:48 Kirtley. So looking forward to a big year and fingers crossed it can stay consistent
03:52 for the whole season.
03:53 Absolutely. Just a few quick ones before we go. Who's going to be top run scorer?
03:58 James Coles.
03:59 Top wicket taker?
04:00 I mean obviously for me that depends who, if Ollie Robinson plays the whole season then
04:06 him I'd say.
04:07 Very good choice. And who's going to be the most improved player as well?
04:14 Tom Clarke. He's going to have a great season this year I feel.
04:17 Good shout. Thank you very much Finn.
