00:05 Okay lads, in that contest, keep it clean at all times, keep it spiked at all times,
00:09 keep respect at all times, touch gloves, here we go.
00:12 Cavoy, the man in charge here.
00:17 And there is Whittaker, just taking a seat on the rope there, testing it out.
00:28 Seeing how tense it is. Second round, round one. So into the first we go, they're scheduled for eight.
00:35 Leon Willings in the blue, central area champion, won that with a really good performance against
00:40 Jake Barton in Liverpool. Boxing out of the away corner, he hasn't had too long to prepare for
00:46 this but he never strays too far from the gym and he was willing to step up. It's not easy to get
00:53 people to fight Whittaker. The price has gone up again in most people's minds after what happened
01:01 at the start of February, so matching him can be a tough job. Really? I've heard a few up-and-coming
01:10 boxers calling him out. But hey, I guess like you said, they're looking for a certain calibre and
01:21 yeah, this is the fighter we got, Leon Williams, central area champion.
01:26 Jab to the chest there from Whittaker, a little feint, seeing if he can draw something there from
01:33 Willings.
01:34 Sucked the right hand into the body, then went up top, but that's decent defence there from
01:44 Willings, he was trapped in the corner, but just dipping at the waist, managed to avoid the left
01:48 hand that came in. Yeah, good work there though from Whittaker, targeting the body, you know,
01:52 take what he gives you and he's doing that, taking the body, jabs the body, straight right hand to
01:57 the body, then banging in that left hook, you already see there the body, red raw,
02:02 against, diving that jab into the body.
02:06 Yeah, I like Ben, Ben's very busy with his jab, about a thousand shots already.
02:17 Looking to chop down with the right hand, a good touchdown there from Willings, so that
02:22 would be counted as a knockdown. He was pinned back on the ropes, he was looking for the left
02:27 hand to the body there Whittaker, then did just catch him with that chopping down right hand.
02:31 Willings just shaking his head as he realised the knockout was going to be given, then
02:38 when boxing resumed, tried to climb into a left hook, but a running up on the left hand side of
02:43 the face, as well as a rib cage, Whittaker picking his punch as well here. He's really digging them
02:48 in now, just landed a lovely left hook to the body. Yeah, this is the fastest, most aggressive
02:56 start I've seen from Ben Whittaker. There's been no prevarication here whatsoever, he's been straight
03:04 into business, no standing off, no having a look, none of the showboating that we've seen previously
03:13 in fights, he's just got straight down to the business of letting his hands go. Strong right
03:18 hand there again, Willings just trying to dip those knees and roll away from the left hand,
03:23 but he's trapped in the corner. Yeah, I think that guy that maybe called him out at a press
03:28 conference has peed him off, because he's really firing at all cylinders. The rights have entered
03:36 around there, we've got a little bit of what we've seen so far, incredible reflexes, and then just
03:44 dabbing that right hand into the body.
03:48 Yeah, good hand speed from Whittaker, left hook to the body working well for him,
04:06 and a good straight right hand there, yeah, chopped it down.
04:08 Lovely variation with his opponent on the ropes, body, head. Yeah, I don't think, sorry,
04:19 Leon's gonna go past three rounds, you know. It's a tough match for him, he enjoys himself
04:26 in there Ben Whittaker, every single moment of it. And there is nothing wrong with showing off
04:33 those skills, nothing wrong with showing off those reflexes. We had this discussion about
04:38 said topic, the two of us during the week, which I very much enjoyed. We may all get back to it at
04:45 some point, the left hand there though does land for Willings, as Whittaker was just trying to
04:49 pull out, so he's got to be a little bit careful, he's got a strong left hook, Leon Willings.
04:53 That might have been the first time I've seen him get hit with three shots, you know.
04:58 It's good to see that from Willings opening up, not being so passive, but actually,
05:03 you know, taking the initiative. You know, he's pinning on those ropes,
05:08 he's got the right hand's going to come over the top of that jab.
05:12 He's got to make, it's okay making Whittaker miss, but then he's got to fire back as well.
05:18 But that will have given Willings some confidence, maybe caught Whittaker a little bit cold at the
05:27 start of the round, look at the uppercut with the left hand, then with the right, he's
05:30 just beginning to open up a little bit here, Willings, which may be exactly what Whittaker
05:34 wants, but it's making for a good spectacle. He landed a nice right uppercut there, Willings.
05:40 Good long right hand, followed up by the left, but the glove was not what it needed to be there
05:49 for Willings, to take some of the impact out of it. Ben's doing something really good when Willings
05:54 is on the ropes, he's tabbing him to the mid area and then comes upstairs, really, really good.
06:01 You can see the reddening on Willings' body already. And looking for that uppercut again
06:05 there, Willings, in this game, you could tell that from watching his previous fights, and that
06:10 left hand is quite dangerous because he throws it in a quite unorthodox manner. Good right hand
06:14 here though for Whittaker, as he throws four or five in a row, he can fling it up from the waist,
06:20 below the waist almost, down by his knee, Willings.
06:27 There's the shot to the body again, taps downstairs,
06:35 then comes upstairs, really good stuff by Ben Whittaker, lovely right hand.
06:40 Yeah, that was a nice short right hand, just measured it with the lead left hand, then chucked it down.
06:48 Again, just climbs into that left hand, it's a strange, unorthodox kind of style that he throws
06:54 it with. Whittaker getting back to the jab to the body, he's winning this round Whittaker,
06:59 but Willings has had a much better round than he had in the first round, and it'll be giving him
07:03 plenty of confidence if he can finish it well in this last 30 seconds. Definitely a much better
07:07 round for Willings, landed some good shots. And he's starting to have a little razzle-dazzle as
07:13 well with the hands down, and you know, it looks like he's getting a bit more confident.
07:18 Into the final 10 seconds, and he's settled here Willings, you always wonder whether
07:28 fighters will handle this kind of stage when they take to it for the first time.
07:40 Joby Clayton leading that corner with Ben Whittaker, there's the QR code,
07:45 give that a scan, get involved, viewers verdict, and the live bloggers always.
07:49 Keep going about the business of breaking him down, and that's what you have to do in any fight.
07:59 If you want that finish you have to earn it, it's always possible you can catch somebody
08:06 cold at one, they're not ready for, they're not braced for early in a fight, but you can't ever
08:11 bank on that, Whittaker certainly hasn't here, he's gone about this business in a very purposeful
08:16 fashion, but Willings showed us something in that second round didn't he Dan? Well no he did, like
08:21 I said he was getting a bit more confident, didn't win the round but was definitely had a better round.
08:30 Yeah, but Whittaker's just teeing off on Willings on the ropes. Good one too there from Whittaker,
08:35 Willings trying to get off the ropes, eventually does, behind that left hand,
08:39 he recognised that that was not where he needed to be. He found the range well there Whittaker,
08:46 right hand comes back there from Willings and Whittaker I think is enjoying this, having somebody
08:50 in front of him who is really looking to try and throw back him, a little bit of a flash move there
08:55 from Willings, he turned southpaw, turned square and then kind of threw in a long left uppercut.
09:03 Yeah I heard in the corner Willings coach tell him beat him at his own game, so maybe we might
09:07 see a bit of showboating from Willings. Good solid right hands again there from Whittaker,
09:14 as he's got Willings backed up to the ropes, but he's taken these well so far
09:17 to win this fight, so it doesn't mean you can take them forever, but he hasn't shown any
09:23 ill effects of tasting the power of Whittaker. Poor right hand.
09:29 Oh he makes me laugh, just trying to point out any losses in the ring, what a funny guy.
09:43 Willings just offering in that head almost there, then launches in with the left,
09:50 and he's making Whittaker work here, right hand over the top, landed on the back of the head,
09:54 but then the left hand got through. That looks like a good shot here Willings,
09:59 I think he's growing in confidence as well. How can he let him talk to his coach?
10:04 And Whittaker with the long right hand, gets through and he's trying to put Willings under
10:10 some pressure in the corner here, but Willings just rocking and rolling there,
10:14 managed to get out of trouble.
10:20 He's now on the right eye, on the corner of the right eye, from one of those right hands
10:30 you would imagine, has a little bit of a wild swing at Whittaker, who shimmies in front of him,
10:35 playing the matador to the ball, but Willings does manage to get hold of him to a degree,
10:41 and the likeness of Leon Willings, because when Ben Whittaker is trying to do that kind of thing,
10:46 he won't have it. He's defiant, he's trying to slip outside the jab there,
10:51 trying to fire back with the right hand, he's fired off here.
11:05 He's unloading there, Whittaker both hands, but you know the defences of Willings pretty
11:12 good there, not too many getting through cleanly. No, but the ones that did land,
11:18 they did look quite... The body shots particularly I think were good.
11:22 Nice right hand from Willings, and an uppercut to finish off.
11:34 The spectator in the Ben Whittaker show, and that's exactly what Whittaker would have wanted.
11:38 But Willings won't give him much time to do that, as soon as he sees him going off on that kind of
11:47 kilter mat, then Willings sees that almost as his invitation, right okay maybe you're not 100%
11:53 concentrated here, here I come. Yeah it's been in it, the first three rounds have been interesting
11:58 to say the least, look Ben Whittaker's on top, but he hasn't had it all his own way, Willings certainly
12:04 landed some good shots.
12:05 Whittaker took it well though. He did take it well, another right there from Willings, Whittaker
12:21 probably would do well to just get back on the job here, body and head, go up and down like he was
12:27 at the start of the fight, and just try and go about the process once again of working his opponent
12:33 over, because he's just got a bit of wind in his sails here Leon Willings, and Whittaker needs to
12:38 take it out basically. Definitely and get back to the jabs, the body, straight right hands to the head,
12:43 left hooks to the body, put those combinations together and yeah put out the fire that Leon
12:48 Willings has managed to create. And he is big a touch more circumspect in this fourth round,
13:01 so far at least Whittaker just fainting with that front foot, looking to keep it
13:05 at distance, jab to the chest, he's just looking to reset here, and try and re-establish that
13:14 absolute dominance that he had in the first round. Yeah it looks like Ben slowed down a bit,
13:20 I don't know maybe he's just trying to like I said, show that yeah, set the dominance in the
13:28 round, but yeah he ain't throwing as much. I think he needs to be mindful of what's coming back at him,
13:35 because Leon Willings has you know fired back the straight right hand, slipped outside the jab,
13:40 Whittaker came back with the right hand, sometimes the drop in lead left uppercut,
13:45 so he's got to be mindful of what's coming back at him, and he's getting more confident
13:50 with the shoulder roll as well when he's on a rope, he's rolling a few right hands.
13:54 Just stuck it this way in there Willings, and tried to let that right hand go, there wasn't
14:00 quite enough room for it by the time he did, this has been a quieter round from the pair of them,
14:05 spearing out that jab there Whittaker. Looking for a big overhand right there Willings.
14:14 Good job from Leon.
14:30 Nice right hand counter there from Whittaker.
14:35 Leon's defense is quite good, he's rolling, he's ducking, he's doing a shoulder roll,
14:57 it's making it a bit more harder for Ben to land these flurries.
15:01 Sometimes you're pushing away, sometimes you're meeting him. Next up Chris Congo takes on Florian
15:12 Marku, and this is a fight that's been talked about for a good good while, I believe it was
15:18 at the original press conference for your fight against Joshua Buatsi, where these two ended up
15:23 having a little bit of a roll around, which is where this all kind of started really, and those
15:28 sorts of backstories are great, because it just gives everything a time to a time to build,
15:34 ferment a little bit, and they do look like two people who genuinely cannot stand the
15:39 sides of each other. Yes for sure, and today is Tuesday for both of them, so I'm looking forward
15:48 to that fight. So into the fifth, into the second half of this scheduled for eight, Ben Whittaker,
15:55 Olympic silver medalist, very highly rated prospect, he's in the red and white. I said it
16:04 weren't going to go past free, Leon's doing all right. Absolutely he is, he is, and I said towards
16:09 the beginning that you don't know when somebody steps up onto this kind of stage, particularly
16:13 when they're faced with a character like Whittaker, whether they will be able to handle it Matt, or
16:18 whether they will freeze, you just don't know until the first bell goes. It was a torrid first round,
16:24 but in the second round he gambled a bit didn't he, and that shows that he's got some he's got
16:29 some bottle as well as some ability. Yeah I think he took some clean shots, he got the knockdown,
16:33 but I think he thought you know what I can live with that power, I think the speed has troubled
16:37 him in a variety at times from Whittaker, but I don't I think he's felt the power and thought
16:42 no I can cope with that, and he's got a little bit bolder in times as the fight's gone, you know
16:48 that said Whittaker has won every round clearly, but he's certainly been competitive Willings.
16:54 Ben Whittaker's really struggling to land that right hand now,
16:58 it looks like Willings is rolling them with ease, he's getting more and more confident.
17:04 You mentioned that Dan and his defense particularly on the ropes has been
17:10 good because he tucks his chin in behind that shoulder, he uses that roll and not all that much
17:16 has got through clean, and when the right hand has landed he's been pulled right onto his back foot,
17:20 so the sting's kind of gone out of it mostly by the time it's landed. Yes look missed the right
17:26 hand there again. Lovely uppercut. Just capable there Willings of coming back with something.
17:37 Whittaker sticking to the task, right hand there, left into the body, lands one to the body,
17:41 Willings comes back. There's a good left hook there from Willings then,
17:45 Whittaker lands a lovely straight right hand. Well two right hands right there.
17:51 I have to really give credit to Leon's defense there,
17:56 Ben's gonna have to come up with something else and he just puts in a cheeky uppercut there.
18:01 He showed a good chin as well Willings because he did take that right hand flush.
18:08 Ben Whittaker's showing a good chin also, he's been caught with a few clean shots as well.
18:13 Look two left hooks there and just pops his head in front of Leon.
18:19 Just swaggering forward Whittaker looking to launch that left hand. Rolls another right hand,
18:27 sorry I'm just in awe of how he's rolling them right hands, good shoulder roll.
18:34 Lovely left hook too. Whittaker by one face looks to try and let his own hands go a little bit into
18:40 the final 10 seconds of round five. Leon is definitely getting more and more confident.
18:46 It's making Ben miss and he's landing shots.
18:50 [Music]
19:07 Loosening up the Albanian king Florian Marku. What's really interesting about this fight as
19:14 well is how inactive these two have been. Marku's had one round, less than one round.
19:20 Since he boxed in Albania in August 2022. Kongo hasn't boxed since January last year on the undercard
19:29 of Chris Eubanks Jr versus Liam Smith there. First fight five rounds deep here.
19:37 Ben Whittaker in the corner. It's been an enjoyable watch this one so far. It has and Willings is
19:44 growing in confidence as the fight's gone on. Oh and Whittaker's won every round for me clearly but
19:48 Willings has got better as the fight's gone on. I'll admit I did fear for Leon Willings a little
19:54 bit this week because it's just such a big step up in every single way and as I said you don't
20:01 know how somebody will react and you never want any fighter who's bold enough to take that kind
20:07 of step to have it turn into a really regrettable experience and that is not what has happened here.
20:15 No but I looked at Leon's record and he's had some decent fights against decent opposition.
20:21 He's won an area title and I really respect the area titles because you're always fighting someone
20:26 who's of the same ilk as you. So the occasion might have got to him but he's definitely been in there
20:32 with 50 in like 50 50 fights or you know fights he might not have even been
20:39 touted to win so he's definitely showing what he's made of for sure and he's only 23 years of age
20:45 himself. It's a baby. People will ask the question though Matt if this goes the distance and that
20:56 question will be should Ben Whittaker be dealing with an area level fighter in better fashion than
21:03 this given the talent that he has and what people think he could go on to achieve? I think the thing
21:08 with Ben Whittaker is he's not a massive puncher. Yeah I know he scored some good knockouts but
21:13 that's because he's timed the shots nicely and walked them onto shots. I don't think he's a
21:18 massive puncher. I think he's a very slick boxer, very skillful, sharp and so you know he's gonna
21:25 box people that maybe he's not gonna get them out of there as quick as people would normally think
21:31 that he would but I think you'll see the best of Ben Whittaker when he's in with somebody where it's
21:36 like a 50-55 I think that's when he'll really see him shine. Heading into the final minute of round
21:43 six and again he's not looked to be too expansive in this round Whittaker doubling up with a jab to
21:48 the body then up to the head and Willings I think is happy enough to almost agree to a round off
21:55 here to an extent. He's been boxing good paceless isn't it? No very good pace.
22:01 Yeah when you're doing all the working around you're letting the shots go and the other guy's
22:14 just kind of surviving looking after himself but then kind of ambushes you with a burst once around
22:20 it's you know what I mean it's not the same I'm not going to say it's easy to do that against someone
22:25 like Ben Whittaker it isn't but it's Ben Whittaker's winning the round he's initiating the attacks he's
22:29 putting the work in Willings is on the back foot and every now and then he'll open up with a burst
22:34 but he can't sustain it to win the round that's good one Whittaker. This is good from Whittaker
22:40 really concussive use of the jab for about 10 seconds before that then let his hands go a little bit.
22:45 Positioning is a lot better yeah he doesn't like going backwards we know that don't let him be done
23:05 for flying forward you go forward your foot positioning was a lot better keep creeping
23:11 forward with head movement don't just be walking forward double guarded I want you like this
23:16 counter punching on the front foot okay yeah he's feeling that now he's hit you with his
23:21 best fucking shot and you're still here okay I want you on this front foot teach it to him now.
23:26 Terry Spencer leading the corner there those two have been together from the start of Willings'
23:32 career boxing out of title shot BC and witness.
23:37 Cornering 10 seconds it's interesting to hear his coach telling him to take the front foot and
23:42 try and push Ben back um second time I'd like to see how he listens and
23:47 tries to take more the front foot in this round.
23:50 So into the seven Whittaker in the white and red Willings in the blue and white.
24:02 Try to time the right hand over the top of the jab there.
24:05 I think with Willings he's more aggressive and comes forward that'll be better for
24:20 Whittaker I think you know he's like I said he's not the heaviest single punch hitter but
24:25 he's sharp he's a good counter puncher and he walks you one two shot that you don't see that's
24:29 how he scores his knockouts but if a guy's going to be on the back foot surviving it's hard for him
24:36 to to get the knockouts. He just switched down for briefly there Willings again just managed
24:42 to roll under a couple on the ropes but then did catch a couple I think he's beginning to feel this
24:46 a bit Leon Willings. I think those resistance levels are beginning to drop because he's taken
24:55 plenty of clean punches and as I said you can't necessarily take them forever you can feel the
25:00 power and be confident that it's not just going to completely take you out but the cumulative effect
25:06 is what we're seeing now. And he's hardly coming back with anything so it seems like it's only a
25:11 matter of time now. And in these last three or four rounds he's gone back to basics really
25:19 Whittaker he made a very good strong start then they had a little bit of a tear up really in
25:23 rounds two and three and Willings played a good good part in that but from four onwards Whittaker
25:28 has gone back to that jab mostly throwing that one two just believing that over time that will
25:35 break his opponent down and put them in a position where maybe he can get the finish
25:39 but will he not to tonight you don't always judge your fights merits and whether you get the
25:44 stoppage or not Matt I think he'll be happy to get eight good rounds in the bank here. Yeah I think so
25:52 he's um Willings has been competitive he's landed some good shots he's made Whittaker think
25:58 Whittaker's landed some good shots himself and he's been dominant. Nah he definitely won't be happy
26:06 if it goes the distance he wants another highlight it's the grand reel and he wants something to get
26:11 loads of views on. This isn't going to get him that and yeah I'm pretty sure he want to get the
26:16 knockout. Yeah but you ain't going to get those every time Dan as you know. And Willings just
26:22 looking for the uppercut there. Whittaker standing a little bit closer good left hand there from Willings
26:27 and then swings himself off his feet looking for a huge left hook. Whittaker just managing to pull
26:33 back out of range but again he's still got that fight in him Willings I did wonder whether
26:38 it was slowly leaving him but not a bit of it. He landed a quick few clean shots nice left up there
26:46 but he's just not throwing enough of them. I think he's happy with making Ben miss
26:50 but he's just not coming back with anything.
26:52 One more. Calm yourself.
26:59 Okay when you let your work go you're gonna make it miss afterwards big man. Okay.
27:11 Calm yourself.
27:17 You see Willings you know pretty wild over the left foot.
27:24 He's not intimidated by Whittaker he's not doing enough to win any of these rounds but he's every
27:31 now and then he'll open up with an eye catching burst which keeps him in the fight although
27:35 Whittaker clearly ahead. This might be a bit of a reach but if it does go to points Ben does win I
27:44 can imagine Leon going home after as I'm thinking oh I could have actually given this guy a run for
27:49 his money you know because he's not doing that bad he's just not doing enough. Now you make a good point there
28:00 because that's what fighters always do isn't it? You're never really satisfied and although he'll
28:08 take a lot of pride if he gets through to the end of the fight here with the way that he has boxed,
28:12 the way that he has fought, the way that he has dug in he will I'm sure think along those lines in the
28:19 coming days and it'll be very interesting to see what he goes on to do from here. He's
28:23 targeting an English title I know that Ricky Summers is defending that against Troy James before
28:29 too long but Whittaker just gave a little walk away to our right hand side and then in the final
28:35 two minutes I think we'll look to try and click through the gears as much as he can
28:38 and see if he can get that stoppage it doesn't look likely at the moment
28:42 he got that knock down in the opening round but since then
28:46 Willings has swung himself off his feet in that previous round but other than that
28:51 he hasn't really looked particularly hurt by any single punch at any point.
28:56 So
29:09 I'm actually a bit let down you know expecting more dancing more showboying
29:22 yeah maybe the level of opposition you know the high it goes maybe that you know drops
29:29 all that joy from Ben Whittaker I was looking forward to seeing some new moves
29:33 but lovely one two on the ropes. Well we see the little bit of that but no not enough
29:39 allowed him to do it to an extent and I do think that he's come here tonight with a real sense of
29:47 purpose Whittaker to break his opponent down and just be all business he did say that yesterday
29:54 after the weigh-in to Andy Scott but then he says plenty of things. Nah you know the followers the
30:02 viewers you know everyone on the Ben Whittaker bandwagon we come to see dancing humiliation
30:07 have a laugh do you know I mean we ain't come to see this.
30:11 Final few seconds and Willings looking to try and let that left hand go again
30:27 looking out of the ring there Whittaker.
30:28 And that was a decent shot.
30:33 Whittaker trying to counter with the right hand there goes a 10 second clap but this is going to
30:40 go all the way to the final bell which called a nice stiff jab there but Willings is going to finish
30:46 the fight back in Ben Whittaker up to the ropes and Ben Whittaker has won that fight but Leon
30:51 Willings has shown us plenty in there coming in at short notice so I absolutely tip my hat to him.
30:57 Now for sure. What did you what did you make of that whole thing? Um do you know what I was really
31:05 pleased with Leon his defense he's done really well but I think because he's probably been you
31:11 know tipped as the underdog he's never going to win or that could probably might have got in his
31:15 head and he just thought you know what I'm just going to survive if I can go to rounds I've won
31:19 in that sense do you know what I mean and um Ben Whittaker I guess um yeah he got some rounds under
31:25 his belt but like I said I think he would have been happy to got a highlight reel again but he
31:30 didn't get that tonight so on to the next one. I mean overall were you were you expecting more from
31:35 him? Um yeah like I said more dances more showboating you know I thought I'd be laughing
31:42 a bit more but yeah it was kind of like you know it was a 70 70 35. I said it right at the very
31:50 beginning basically because people have talked about it when would he be ready necessarily for
31:54 somebody like you we always want fighters like Whittaker the public want them to move really
32:00 really quickly you've got a big smile on your face there and it tells me that from what you've
32:03 seen tonight you know that there is there is a lot of work to be done over in that corner and
32:07 I'm sure they realize that before they could get in with you. No for sure what do you think he's
32:12 ready to get in there with the likes of me? No personally I didn't and you can't you can't skip
32:18 levels can you he's got outstanding pedigree we all know that but it's like doing exams isn't it
32:23 you learn the syllabus in the gym you do the exam on fight night and if you try and jump from GCSE
32:28 level to PhD well the odd genius can do that but everybody else you've got to do it you've got to
32:33 go through those fights. So basically you're saying Ben's not the genius you you'd have been
32:37 hoping him to be. Aziz are you trying to get me into trouble here you're trying to get me
32:42 into trouble I'm saved by the MC here's Big Mo. Ladies and gentlemen after eight full rounds we
32:52 go to referee Sean McAvoy for the official decision he sees the contest 78 to 73
32:58 declaring your winner and still undefeated Ben 'The Surgeon' Whittaker
33:06 Ben Whittaker posing for pictures with Leon Willings a shake of hands between the two
33:17 and the away corner fighter there has shown us plenty and as I said we will watch with
33:22 interest to see what he goes on to do next the Whittaker train will keep rolling forward
