Taiwan Reveals Five New Cabinet Ministers for Incoming Administration

Taiwan's incoming Lai Ching-te administration has revealed its picks for interior, transportation, justice, education and culture ministers.

00:00 Two days after Taiwan President-elect Lai Ching-teh announced his pick for Taiwan's next Premier,
00:06 Chou Rong-tai, Chou today announced five of Taiwan's next cabinet ministers.
00:12 We hope to continue to work hard on the basis of our current governance.
00:19 To find new solutions for old problems, and good solutions for new problems.
00:26 First, we have Liu Sifang who's been tapped as Taiwan's next Interior Minister.
00:32 Liu is a former deputy mayor of Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan.
00:37 She's also been a legislator and she's also been the Secretary General of the cabinet.
00:42 However, she's probably best known for overseeing disaster relief efforts
00:47 after a gas explosion in Kaohsiung City in 2014.
00:52 Taiwan's current Cabinet Secretary General Li Meng-yan will be Taiwan's next Transport Minister.
00:58 Now, when announcing his appointment, Chou pointed out that Li has a background in environmental engineering.
01:05 And Li has been tasked with developing Taiwan's infrastructure
01:09 with an emphasis on offsetting the negative impacts of climate change.
01:13 Taiwan's next Justice Minister will be Tziming Qian, who is currently Taipei City's Chief Prosecutor.
01:21 Taiwan's next Education Minister is Zeng Yingyao,
01:24 who is the current President of National Sun Yat-sen University in southern Taiwan.
01:30 When announcing his appointment, Zou said that Zeng has years of experience developing bilingual education
01:36 and raising student competitiveness, which has been an emphasis point for the ruling DPP administration over the years.
01:45 Finally, Zou announced that Taiwan's next Culture Minister will be writer and screenwriter Li Yuan.
01:50 Better known by his pen name, Xiao Ye.
01:53 What's interesting is Li was an aide to former Taipei City Mayor Ke Wen-che,
01:59 who now chairs the opposition Taiwan People's Party.
02:03 However, Zou seemed confident in Li's ability to help develop Taiwan's culture,
02:08 whether it be local culture, industrial culture, and make that a bright spot on the international stage.
02:15 There remains about 10 cabinet positions that have yet to be announced.
02:20 The cabinet spokesperson told Taiwan Plus earlier that there are two to three more cabinet minister position announcement events like these in the works.
02:29 Still yet to be announced are vital arms of government like the ministers for the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Defense Ministry.
