00:00 Thousands of jobs were opened to Filipinos
00:03 in the new smoke-free tobacco manufacturing facility in Tanawan, Batangas.
00:09 That's what Clayzel Cordelia reported.
00:11 A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of tobacco products was opened today.
00:26 First Lady Liza Arneta Marcos led the inauguration of the new facility in Tanawan, Batangas
00:34 that is able to produce smoke-free tobacco products
00:40 that meet the demand of new consumers.
00:43 The manufacturing facility is 12,000 square meters.
00:49 81% of its operation is run using solar energy.
00:55 It is owned by an American multinational tobacco company
01:00 that is producing more than P8 billion pesos in the Philippines.
01:05 According to the Department of Agriculture,
01:07 P1.8 billion pesos is the value of tobacco that is being produced in the Philippines
01:14 by the company every year.
01:17 It provides more than 4,000 jobs to Filipinos.
01:21 Many more will be expected to grow their own tobacco
01:27 through the new manufacturing facility.
01:31 This is a testament to the Philippine status
01:33 as one of the leading investment destinations in the world
01:37 under the Marcos administration.
01:39 The quality of the tobacco in the Philippines is getting better and better.
01:44 And we're also thinking about using Philippine tobacco in the smoke-free products.
01:50 They require even better quality, consistency, etc.
01:54 But I believe the farmers, the tobacco growers in the Philippines
01:58 can deliver on that quality.
02:00 Currently, 35% of the tobacco needed by companies in the country
02:07 is being produced by local farmers.
02:10 On the other hand,
02:12 the National Tobacco Administration
02:15 is planning to increase the production of tobacco to 42 million kilograms by 2024.
02:23 The target is to expand the tobacco production.
02:26 In the areas of Maguindanao and Bukidnon,
02:31 the areas that are targeted are the tobacco and the mango.
02:37 There are areas in Region 1 that are also affected by the LNG.
02:42 But even if you estimate, isn't the impact of LNG that big?
02:47 Or is the LNG effect severe?
02:50 No, because we have already convinced our farmers to plant early.
02:59 Next week, Secretary Teo Laurel is expected to push South Korea
03:06 to start producing different products in the Philippines,
03:10 like avocado that can be exported.
03:13 This is Lhenzel Cordilla for Papansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
