00:00 I broke down and I'm like, why are you guys talking about my husband like this?
00:04 Like you don't know him.
00:05 You don't know who he is.
00:07 Simone Biles isn't holding back.
00:10 Considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, the Olympian spoke with Alex Cooper
00:13 for the April 17th episode of Call Her Daddy, where she opened up about a range of personal
00:17 subjects, including her childhood, which she was going through during the Tokyo Olympics
00:21 in 2021, and the backlash her husband, NFL star Jonathan Owens, received for his controversial
00:26 comments on a podcast where he seemingly implied he was the catch in their relationship and
00:30 didn't know who Simone was when they first started dating.
00:32 And it's really how she pulled me, man.
00:35 That's the question.
00:36 Oh Lord Jesus.
00:37 Now you with Freddie.
00:38 So I'm going to see what's up.
00:39 So I go do my workout and I come back and I get like, I had some likes on my Instagram,
00:44 you know, and I'm like, I'm like, oh, this might be, I'm like, okay.
00:49 So I see what's up.
00:50 And then I still waited.
00:51 I'm like, man, I'm gonna wait.
00:52 I'm gonna wait till I, you know, take a shower and everything.
00:54 And I come back to my phone and then she messaged me on the app.
00:58 Like, hey, you know what I mean?
01:00 And I'm man, that's a man.
01:01 It's gotta be fake.
01:02 Like, I don't know.
01:03 Just, I didn't know who she was at the time, but like the first thing that I saw was that
01:07 she just had a bunch of followers.
01:08 So in my mind, I'm like, okay, she gotta be good.
01:11 I promise you I'm a real life story.
01:12 When she won the Olympics, I was in college and we didn't have NBC.
01:18 We didn't have Olympic channels and we're in camp.
01:20 We're in camp late, late, late July, early August.
01:22 So I'm not paying attention to, you know, so I never would have had a moment to where
01:26 I would have watched like, you know.
01:28 Chunk, I'm gonna let you finish your story, man.
01:30 Continue.
01:31 But like I was saying, man, she, she messaged me.
01:35 This is like a Tuesday and we, we, we were texting back and forth and then we hung out
01:40 Friday man.
01:41 And we couldn't do much as COVID happened, everything was shut down.
01:44 So she came through down, down the hills and she live in the suburbs.
01:48 So she had to drive about 45 minutes to me.
01:50 Then the rest is history, man.
01:52 So you was really the catch in.
01:54 I always say we the man that catch, man.
01:56 I always say we the catch, man.
01:58 Yeah.
01:59 So she really booked you.
02:00 She did though.
02:01 It's what you said.
02:02 Cause I was fighting it.
02:03 I was fighting it.
02:04 The 27 year old told Alex that the situation didn't bother her at first, but she eventually
02:08 broke down because of backlash.
02:11 So I thought it was hilarious at first and then they hurt my feelings.
02:16 And then like one night I got broke.
02:17 I broke down and I'm like, why are you guys talking about my husband like this?
02:21 Like you don't know him, you don't know who he is.
02:24 And if anybody's met him, they know he's the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody.
02:27 It was just perceived in not the correct way.
02:30 Yes.
02:31 And so that really hurt that they were talking about my husband like that.
02:34 Because for me, it's like, talk about me all you want, but don't come for my family.
02:40 Never.
02:41 Yeah.
02:42 Simone clarified the catch comment and spoke about how much her husband means to her.
02:46 I didn't think anything of that interview.
02:48 And he never said I wasn't a catch.
02:49 He said he was a catch because he is.
02:51 I've never met a man like him.
02:52 A lot of people that meet him are like, oh my gosh, like I want a man like that.
02:57 Like Jonathan, like a lot of the girls at the gym, they love him.
03:00 He's so nice to them.
03:02 He supports them.
03:03 He's so sweet.
03:05 The Olympic champion also opened up about withdrawing from events during the Tokyo Olympics
03:08 in 2021 after she suffered the quote twisties, which is described as a person's mind body
03:13 being out of sync and how it affected her mental health.
03:17 If I could have gotten a plane and flown home, I would have done it.
03:21 But I just, as soon as I landed, I was like, oh, America hates me.
03:29 The world is going to hate me.
03:32 And I can only see what they're saying on Twitter right now.
03:35 That was my first thought.
03:36 Simone.
03:37 I was like, holy s***.
03:38 What are they going to say about me?
03:39 Because usually if you go to the Olympics and you flop or whatever it is, everybody
03:43 on their couch eating those little chips.
03:45 Right.
03:46 And you let the country down.
03:47 Oh, I was I thought I was going to be banned from America because that's what they tell
03:51 you.
03:52 Don't come back if it's not gold, gold or bust.
03:53 Don't come back.
03:54 And I was like, I don't think.
03:57 Also I have so many people who have helped me get to where I was.
04:03 And I felt like I didn't just let down myself.
04:06 I let down that team that was there.
04:08 I let down America.
04:10 I let down my trainers.
04:11 I let down.
04:12 There are so many people that helped me get there.
04:15 And that's why every time I get to compete for Team USA or I'm on top of that podium,
04:19 I'm so grateful.
04:20 And that medal is not just for me, it's for everybody that has helped me get there.
04:24 So it's like at that point it was really heavy because I was like, I couldn't even at that
04:28 point.
04:29 I couldn't even look at Laurent.
04:32 Like Cecile helped me so much, but I couldn't look at Laurent.
04:35 Simone explained what the situation could feel like for those who aren't familiar with
04:38 gymnastics and recounted what happened when she got home.
04:41 Can you explain also to people that aren't familiar?
04:43 What is the twisties?
04:44 Okay.
04:45 If I had to explain it in gymnastics terms, it might not make sense, but it's basically
04:50 like your mind and your body is at a disconnect.
04:53 Your body is going to try to do something and your mind is going to be like, no, you're
04:56 not doing this work.
04:57 You're going to open out.
04:58 You're going to do this.
04:59 But it's the same as if like, the best way I could describe it is every day you drive
05:03 a car.
05:04 If one day you woke up and you had no idea how to drive a car, your legs are going crazy.
05:08 You have no control over your body.
05:10 That's kind of how it feels like you've been doing something for so long and you now no
05:13 longer have control.
05:15 Terrifying.
05:16 And it's terrifying because we're in a car without any protection.
05:20 I am my car, but I couldn't break down until we got home.
05:23 And guess what?
05:24 When I got home, they threw a parade.
05:26 And they're like, get ready, Simone.
05:28 We have a parade through the neighborhood.
05:30 Like get your convertible.
05:32 Smile and wave.
05:33 I just wanted to have like a breakdown and I didn't want to have it.
05:37 This mental breakdown, it was waiting.
05:39 No, it is sitting in your chest.
05:42 You're like, when can I sob?
05:44 When can I sit in my bed for 48 hours and not leave and just sob?
05:49 And you had to do a parade.
05:50 Yeah, a parade.
05:51 At that point, you're like- I just wanted to cry.
05:56 Will the tears even come at this point?
05:57 I've been holding it in.
05:58 I just wanted to cry and be like, this was the shittiest thing ever.
06:02 I don't know why it happened.
06:03 I just wanted to soak in my feelings and to be by myself.
06:07 And I didn't want anybody to tell me that it was okay anymore.
06:12 Because I'm tired of everybody telling me it's okay.
06:14 It's okay to you.
06:15 It's not okay to me.
06:16 What happened was not okay.
06:18 Like so that was that.
06:20 So when did you break down?
06:22 Probably when I had to unpack that suitcase.
06:25 The four-time Olympic gold medalist revealed to Hover that she is currently training, with
06:29 the goal to be in the Paris Olympics.
06:31 I think I requested a meeting or whatever with Cecile and Laurent and we ended up at
06:34 their house and brought my husband, you know, my little Blanky.
06:39 And I was like, okay, I want to go back to the Olympics.
06:43 I want to do this.
06:45 And they're sitting across the table and they look at me and they're like, no.
06:50 And I was like, ah!
06:51 I just told you I want to go to the Olympics.
06:52 Like I want to go back to the Olympics.
06:55 Let's do this.
06:56 Wait, like scream for me?
06:57 Yes.
06:58 And they were like, no.
07:01 And I was like, what's happening?
07:05 I'm like, what was going on?
07:08 And they were like, no, you've set expectations for yourself for so long.
07:15 Let's just go back in the gym, get in shape and see what happens.
07:20 And I was like, so we're not going to the Olympics?
07:23 We're not training for the Olympics?
07:24 They're like, we ain't going to Paris?
07:25 Yes.
07:26 Like what do you mean?
07:27 And so that was really weird to me because I thought they were going to be on board.
07:31 Like, yes, we have the process laid out.
07:34 Let's go.
07:35 And they just said no.
07:36 And I was like, do I get new coaches?
07:40 What's going to happen?
07:42 And I was like, oh, you're right.
07:44 And he was like, let's not just think about the Olympics right now.
07:48 Let's think about maybe getting your skills back, twisting comfortably again, doing this.
07:54 And I was like, oh, those things.
07:57 So, OK, fine.
07:58 Yeah.
07:59 But then can we go to the Olympics?
08:00 Yes.
08:01 And that's kind of how we started it.
08:03 And then I didn't think I was competing at Classics last year.
08:07 And he was like, yeah, you're competing.
08:09 Here's your Leo's.
08:10 Here's this.
08:11 Here's that.
08:12 I was like, what?
08:13 No, we weren't going to the Olympics.
08:16 So I can officially ask and you can confirm, like, the goal is to go to Paris?
08:22 If all goes well, I'm training.
08:24 Yeah.
08:25 The goal is to go to Paris.
08:28 Yes.
