00:00Quincy, your overall kind of assessment of the defense, and
00:03then kind of take us through, you heard Tyler talk about that play.
00:07Take us through the interception.
00:09Yes, sir.
00:10Just being out there playing in defense, going on my second year,
00:14I'm just real comfortable knowing when I can take the risk, or when I can just
00:19display, play on the ball, use my ability to grow up with, to know when to use it,
00:25and when not to use it, and playing in defense, I'm just more
00:29comfortable now taking the risk, and I just seen him throw the ball with a couple
00:34of three, and I see a seam, right, as a quarterback, that's the first place you
00:38wanna look on a couple of three, so I just felt like he was gonna throw it, and
00:41I just reacted real quickly.
00:46Actually, this is for you.
00:48Coach Brown kind of alluded to, like, with some injuries and
00:50things right now, it's not a full defense, and you guys will be a big key
00:54with that coming back, but how encouraging was it to see some newcomers out there
00:58making some plays, and it seems like they're also starting to get settled into
01:01this defense a little bit.
01:02No, it was awesome, actually.
01:04It was a great display.
01:05I mean, obviously, we're down a little bit on numbers.
01:07I have some important people out, but, I mean, everyone's on this defense.
01:13We're not playing with just 11 people, you know what I'm saying?
01:16We need reliable people to sub in and to sub out, and
01:20really, you're only as strong as your weakest link.
01:22So being able to get everyone good reps, good play, and
01:26especially to keep the energy high all game, even though, I mean,
01:29we got people playing back-to-back snaps, back-to-back drives.
01:33That was really encouraging to see.
01:35Obviously, we got a lot to go, but
01:37it's a good thing to see us come together like that.
01:40For both of you guys, starting with Ashton,
01:42you guys have seen Tyler better than anybody throughout the spring.
01:45Can you guys just kind of put a bow on it and tell us, what have you seen from him,
01:50the positives, the highs, the lows, what does he need to work on, and
01:52what stood out to you about him that makes him a leader for this particular squad?
01:58Well, he came in, he was already in it.
02:02It didn't, it almost didn't feel, it wasn't like a rough transition.
02:05He came in, made himself real comfortable with the guys,
02:09getting around everyone, whether that was taking the offense out to eat or
02:13stuff like that.
02:14But he's just been a really social guy, and he's made himself available to
02:18a lot of people, and I think that's something that stands out as a leader,
02:21cuz you need to be available for other people.
02:23And so really, it's kind of just been seamless, for him to fit in.
02:28All kinds of people, that's just how he is.
02:32Obviously, he's got a great arm, he can put it on the money.
02:35He can move a little bit when he's comfortable, but he's a good quarterback.
02:40I'm looking forward to seeing how it shakes out.
02:44Like he said, the biggest thing, his leadership,
02:46making himself available to the younger guys, older guys.
02:49He's just available as a leader, and not just a quarterback.
02:53Come talk to him anytime.
02:55Most important, it was one day on spring ball, we had just got out of practice.
03:00He already turned on the tape, just already turned on the tape.
03:03Way, we just got out of practice, he already,
03:05don't shut the pass, still on, just watching film already.
03:08So I was like, okay, yeah, he come to win, and
03:11that's what I wanna see in my quarterback.
03:13Also, just going against him every day in practice, doing the,
03:16making throws, I went like, quarterbacks usually shy away from whole shots and
03:21cover two to the field.
03:23Most quarterbacks don't wanna make that throw,
03:24he comfortable making that throw.
03:25So just seeing him doing things like that, I think we got a good shot.
03:30I feel real comfortable with him as my quarterback.
03:33This one's for both of you guys.
03:34Quincy, you mentioned leadership, and I feel like you two had similar decisions to
03:38make coming into this year, and you both decided to come back.
03:41How much do you feed off of each other as leaders on the defensive side of the ball,
03:45when you've been here a good bit now, and you've got some higher aspirations?
03:49I feed off him a lot, things he do, I'm still working on things I do.
03:53I'm pretty sure he's picking up on, and just knowing we got two,
03:56cuz it started with our D-line, and having the lead on the D-line,
04:00that real big for me.
04:01So knowing he can take control of his room, and
04:04then I just feed off that, take control of my room, just come together.
04:07We just, the whole defense is gonna feed off of us, too.
04:10We gonna make a goal, and then everybody just come along.
04:13So that's gonna take us a long way.
04:15You can't have one part without the other.
04:18Obviously, we can't do anything up front.
04:19We don't have people like that to turn the quarterback from throwing the ball.
04:24It's just, everything like that is just getting together.
04:27Obviously, me and him talk, I've done some of my leadership things,
04:31trying to get right with ourselves, just to call it out to other people.
04:34You know what I'm saying?
04:35And I mean, I think it shows.
04:37Last two, who else is-
04:40This is some of those younger guys.
04:41Who have you seen when you stand out and make plays today or
04:44throughout spring practices on the defensive side of the ball?
04:47I can start from my room.
04:49Aaron Williams, coming off an injury, he showed his toughness and
04:54ability to play, his ability to play.
04:57So that's one of the young guys.
04:59And then transfer, they're not young, but it's Sean coming in and
05:03patting our defense, I feel comfortable with those guys.
05:07Ta'Bion Nicholson, and then up front, I see some new D-linemen coming in,
05:12ready to go, just learning the defense, and just giving us a little push.
05:17Also, Durante Davis, Stancorn Clark, those guys at back,
05:21we need, at this level, you need people to come in and
05:25if they're not starters, potentially be starters, to keep everybody going.
05:29At some point in time in the game, you're gonna get tired.
05:34So with those guys coming in and working out, I feel real comfortable.
05:38Yeah, you know I gotta shout out the young guys on the D-line.
05:40So someone that we've seen a lot of good work, and
05:44I like their work ethic, is Maurice Davis.
05:46Maurice Davis has shown a lot, obviously coming in, it's a new system.
05:52But he plays fast, he plays with a chip on his shoulder.
05:55Tonight, MJ Campbell, I know he's a walk-on, but he really shows a lot of heart,
06:01and he shows that he wants to be here.
06:02And I think that's something I can really appreciate, being in the room.
06:05Cuz as a defensive line, especially, passion's one of our biggest things.
06:09So in regards to that, new guys, D-line,
06:13he kinda already covered the secondary, linebackers.
06:16Maybe I can shout out Trent, but that's really what I would say.
06:23For both of you guys, you guys are obviously one of several guys who are
06:26coming back for their second year in this system.
06:29Knowing that they're about a good chunk of this defense that already are heading
06:33into their second year, and not having an entire year,
06:36knowing what the scheme is and the system is.
06:38How much more comfortable does that make you guys as a whole, and
06:42help you get that much closer to what you guys want to accomplish as a defense?
06:45It'll just make us really play faster.
06:48And also, just coming back and knowing the defense,
06:50that just make you feel like you got coaches on the field.
06:52Without them being on the field, you hear coaches, they tell us to play, and
06:56we just gotta execute.
06:57But now you got people that, being back in the defense,
06:59now the defense gonna be just one step faster than that.
07:02All them steps matter when you take them.
07:04Yeah, and having people that know the playbook allows us to call each other out
07:08on plays.
07:09And sometimes it doesn't even need to reach the coach,
07:11cuz we can step in and intervene, get it right.
07:15Obviously, you play faster, you know your plays faster.
07:19It's our install this year, we went through a bunch of calls and
07:23it was almost seamless.
07:25It was just having a bunch of people who already know the system, and yeah,
07:29we got a lot of new guys.
07:29But that kind of dynamic of having people who already know it, and
07:33just feeding off each other, it kind of just kept it pretty smooth.
07:36All right, thanks, guys.
07:39Thank you, and thank you, guys.
07:40Thanks, guys.
07:40Thank you.
07:41Thanks, guys.
