00:00 It was recently announced that the River Tyne could be used to provide heat to a major Newcastle
00:05 development. City leaders are currently exploring plans that would see water from the Tyne used
00:10 to provide low-carbon heat and hot water to new homes that will be built in the Fourth
00:14 Yards area of Newcastle. Last week the Council's Climate Change Committee were informed of
00:20 the critical role the River Tyne could play in this new scheme. The plans would see water
00:25 used from the river and heat energy extracted from it before the water is then returned
00:29 back to the Tyne, with that extracted heat energy being used by nearby buildings. A spokesperson
00:36 for the Council's Climate Change Committee stated that the plans would take a long time
00:39 to develop but that he hoped designs could be completed by the end of 2025. A similar
00:45 scheme has already been installed in Jarrow and has been praised as a groundbreaking initiative
00:49 that could cut carbon emissions by more than 1,000 tonnes per year.
