How did week one go for teams in the NFC?
Transcript
00:00 Week one of the NFL is officially in the books and joining me now to recap the big weekend
00:05 of games are our Fan Nation publishers from around the NFC, Ed Kratz, Grant Cohn, Kyle
00:11 Mosley, and John Maroon.
00:13 I'm Claudette Monteiro with SI right now and guys, a fun week of football, a lot of upsets
00:18 and a lot of surprises.
00:19 As you take a look back, you know, at this past weekend, what are your biggest takeaways
00:24 from week one?
00:25 Well, for the Philadelphia Eagles, I would say the big takeaway is going into a really
00:29 raucous environment at Ford Field in front of almost 70,000 fans.
00:33 And man, that place, that was probably the second loudest venue I've ever been in.
00:38 The Eagles got out to a big lead 31-14 and the Lions just were back, if you will, and
00:45 cut the deficit to 38-35.
00:48 Had they been able to make a play in the passing game, there were a couple of drops.
00:51 They may have been able to win this game and start their season 1-0, but the Eagles now
00:55 are 1-0.
00:56 They haven't gotten off to great starts in the past.
00:59 They played the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football, so it's going to be interesting
01:04 to see how that shakes out.
01:05 Can they start 2-0 for the first time in many, many years?
01:08 But I think what they learned about themselves is that they are a resilient bunch going into
01:13 Detroit where they were just fired up, man.
01:15 Those fans were behind that team.
01:17 The Eagles really had to dig deep to win that ballgame.
01:21 Well, with the 49ers, they had just about the most embarrassing loss of Week 1.
01:27 I mean, they went to Chicago and lost to the Bears.
01:29 They lost to the Bears.
01:30 They were winning 10-0 with six minutes left in the third quarter and lost by nine.
01:34 So it was quite shocking.
01:36 And I think most people, if you weren't watching the game, you look at it, you're thinking,
01:40 Trey Lance's fault.
01:41 They got to go back to Jimmy Garoppolo.
01:42 And that's sort of the conversation around the team right now when really what happened
01:46 was the whole team was unprepared.
01:49 The team committed 12 penalties for 100 yards.
01:53 Kyle Shanahan's a good coach, but he often doesn't have his team prepared Week 1.
01:56 He doesn't play his guys in preseason very much.
01:58 His training camps are light.
01:59 He's 2-4 Week 1 as a coach.
02:01 Week 2, he's 4-1.
02:03 So the way I interpret it is, it was a preseason game for the Niners.
02:06 It was a regular season game for the Bears.
02:08 They didn't beat themselves.
02:09 The Niners did.
02:10 They play the Seahawks next week at home.
02:12 I think they're going to be the Niners that we remember in that game.
02:16 Well, for the New Orleans Saints, Grant, it wasn't as shocking.
02:21 They vanquished the dreaded and hateful Falcons once again.
02:26 And they did it in a glorious comeback fashion.
02:30 I was there in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
02:33 And one thing that we noticed with this New Orleans Saints team, the veterans as well
02:38 as those free agent acquisitions, Jarvis Landry, Tyron Matthew, as well as Marcus May, they
02:44 came up huge at huge times.
02:47 And I asked James Winston about it.
02:49 He said, "Hey, big-time players make big-time plays in big-time situations."
02:54 And they did.
02:55 So going forward, I think the Saints are looking pretty good.
02:59 They host Tom Brady and the Buccaneers on Sunday.
03:03 So I would love to be there inside the season Superdome.
03:06 Matter of fact, I will.
03:08 It's going to be great.
03:11 And for the Detroit Lions looking to rebound after an abysmal defensive performance, I
03:15 was quite literally surprised that with an offseason, an entire offseason to prepare
03:20 for Jalen Hurts and his ability to run, the defense was simply unable to get to Jalen
03:26 Hurts.
03:27 Aiden Hutchinson, the number two overall pick, was able to get into the backfield but could
03:31 not close.
03:32 Jalen Hurts and the offense were able to get out to the big lead and were able to take
03:36 down the victory at Ford Field.
03:38 Like previously said, the Detroit Lions looking to clean up a lot of mistakes defensively
03:43 and looking to continue their solid play offensively.
03:46 DeAndre Swift looked like the real-deal running back that he has been projected to be.
03:51 So now coming in to Week 2 to play the Washington Commanders, the Detroit Lions are favored.
03:56 Actually favored in one of the first times in a long time in Week 2.
04:01 So for the Detroit Lions, they're going to be looking to avenge a loss and looking to
04:04 rebound and secure a 1-1 record after Week 2.
