00:00 College football season is back and we had the customary wild week one, all sorts of
00:05 stuff happening coast to coast.
00:06 I'm Pat Forty from Sports Illustrated joined by my colleague Richard Johnson.
00:11 College football playoff news.
00:13 We're expanding from four to 12.
00:15 What's your biggest takeaway there about that?
00:18 We are finally, thankfully expanding.
00:20 It has been a long road to get here, unfortunately, as we both know some competing interests got
00:26 in the way last fall.
00:28 I think we probably wasted a little bit of time over the last 15 months not expanding
00:31 it because of course, we did expand this last week.
00:34 I think there are a lot of people who have maybe some confusion about why they decided
00:38 to expand 24 hours before the season started proper.
00:41 But hey, it's college football playoff management and nothing is exactly as it should be with
00:47 those folks.
00:48 I hear that.
00:49 And I do think it's good news.
00:50 I mean, I think it's going to be good for the sport.
00:52 It's going to hopefully provide some conference stability, more access, more interest for
00:57 more programs.
00:58 I think it's going to be a good thing.
01:00 We did actually have games on the field.
01:02 Who jumped out to you in week one?
01:04 What was the most impressive thing you saw?
01:06 Yeah, I know it's easy to take Georgia who won 49 to 3 or take Ohio State who won with
01:11 the run game and defense for the first time in Lord knows how long under Ryan Day.
01:15 But I'm actually going to go a little bit lower down in the top 25 and take Oklahoma
01:19 State.
01:20 Oklahoma State scored a ton of points.
01:22 They covered the over in their game by themselves without Central Michigan's help.
01:27 They have been offensively challenged last year, but Spencer Sanders is back for another
01:31 year of quarterback and Oklahoma State really had something on offense on Thursday night
01:35 when they opened their season.
01:36 I'm going to go to Gainesville and say Florida defending the swamp against a good Utah team
01:42 that came in favored there and a really great start to Billy Napier's tenure and also Anthony
01:47 Richardson in that starting role.
01:49 We'd seen the teases last year and boy, we start to see him now deliver on his potential.
01:54 Speaking of the Gators, speaking of the swamp, Kentucky is coming in there Saturday.
01:58 A big early SEC game.
02:01 You spent some time breaking down Will Levis, the quarterback for Kentucky as an NFL prospect
02:05 and just his overall growth.
02:07 Tell us what you learned about Will.
02:08 Yeah, I think there's a lot of people who are confused with where the Will Levis hype
02:12 has come from.
02:14 He's got the tools.
02:15 But as an NFL scout told me, it's NFL tools right now, not necessarily NFL tape.
02:21 That is the thing that has to improve for him.
02:23 He's got to show it on the field.
02:24 He's got all the arm strength.
02:26 He makes some interesting decisions with the ball sometimes, but you see the arm talent.
02:30 Now he's got a pair of the arm talent with great decision making and hopefully take this
02:34 Kentucky team to another level.
02:36 Kentucky has got some pieces around him that are just constantly in flux right now.
02:40 They're already jumbling the offensive line that had zero starts combined last Saturday.
02:44 They're replacing both tackles.
02:46 So Kentucky is still trying to figure stuff out around Will Levis, but Levis himself,
02:50 he can play.
02:51 They go into the swamp and win with, as you said, the amount of flux around him that could
02:55 really give a boost to him as a Heisman candidate, as an NFL prospect.
03:00 Another really interesting quarterback matchup.
03:02 Two guys who have been hyped all along from high school onward in Austin, Texas.
03:07 Bryce Young against Quinn Ewers.
03:10 We also have Steve Sartegian going up against Nick Saban.
03:13 Is this going to be a bloodbath or is there going to be something interesting to watch
03:16 in Austin?
03:17 I have a little fear for the young man Quinn Ewers in this game, just because he's not
03:21 going to face anybody like Dallas Turner and Will Anderson as Ed Rushers, who are going
03:25 to put him under constant duress.
03:27 And any quarterback all the way up to Tom Brady is going to look worse under pressure.
03:31 I think Alabama is going to roll in this game just because they are the more complete product.
03:35 But look for Jermeir Gibbs on Alabama's offense to shine in addition to, of course, Bryce
03:40 Young.
03:41 In a vacuum, the idea of Texas as a 20-point home underdog is crazy, but in reality, I
03:46 think it fits.
03:47 I think Alabama will roll once again.
03:49 (upbeat music)
