Will the Green Bay Packers compete for a super bowl without wide receiver Davante Adams?
Transcript
00:00 The Green Bay Packers held their first practice in full pads on Tuesday and joining me now
00:05 with some notes and observations from Lambeau Field is our All-Packers publisher, Bill Huber.
00:11 Bill, the Packers now have six practices in the books.
00:15 What are your takeaways from camp so far?
00:17 Yeah, Claudette, either the defense is really good and is exactly as advertised or the offense
00:22 is not very good at all.
00:24 The offense won the first day of practice, Aaron Rodgers afterward called the defense
00:26 "chumps" playfully, mind you.
00:28 He called them "chumps."
00:29 The defense has certainly turned the tide.
00:31 Look, the defense is really good.
00:32 There isn't a single weak link on the starting 11.
00:35 The offense, minus Devante Adams, it's going to be a real work in progress.
00:39 Their first receiver in the draft, Christian Watson, has a knee injury.
00:42 He has not practiced.
00:43 Their big veteran addition, big, relatively speaking, Sammy Watkins, he just started practicing.
00:48 So they've got Alan Lazard, who's back from last year, Randall Cobb, who's 31, and a couple
00:53 other rookies.
00:54 Romy Roudalbis has been really good, but they're going to have to really lean on this running
00:57 game, which all sounds great in theory, Claudette, but all-pro left tackle David Bocchiari has
01:02 not practiced, nor has pro bowl left guard Elton Jenkins, as they come back from their
01:06 torn ACLs.
01:07 Do you believe that this team can be a championship winning team without Devante Adams?
01:12 So if those receivers, Claudette, I know Packer fans will say, "Yeah, but we've got the MVP
01:17 quarterback.
01:18 We've got a great scheme."
01:19 Yeah, you know what, though?
01:20 The Buccaneers have a great quarterback and they've got a great scheme.
01:23 They've got Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, and Julio Jones, right?
01:27 The Rams have a great quarterback and a great scheme.
01:29 They've got Cooper Cupp and Alan Robertson.
01:31 The Packers have Sammy Watkins, who's had a 1,000-yard season back in 2015.
01:36 They've got Randall Cobb.
01:37 His last 1,000-yard season was 2015.
01:40 And Lazard's number-top 600 yards.
01:41 They've got three rookies.
01:42 At the end of the day, someone's going to have to stop.
01:46 It might be really ugly-ish football by Packer standards.
01:49 We're used to 30-point games all the time, so it might be a real struggle from that perspective.
01:54 But by the time November and December and January comes around, one of these young guys
01:57 is really going to have to be a go-to kind of player.
02:00 Otherwise, I just can't see them beating a really good defense in a really big game.
