Arch Manning committed to Texas
Transcript
00:00 The nation's number one overall recruit quarterback Arch Manning announced his
00:03 commitment to the Texas Longhorns on Thursday morning. Manning is the nephew of Eli and
00:09 Peyton Manning and chose Texas over top programs like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Clemson. I'm
00:15 Claudette Montana-Pattison with SI right now and joining me is Sports Illustrated recruiting
00:19 analyst John Garcia Jr. John, what makes Texas the perfect fit for Arch Manning?
00:26 Opportunity, Claudette. You listed a lot of schools that have been there and done that,
00:30 right? Including the last three national champions being Georgia, Alabama, and LSU,
00:36 respectively. Texas is looking to get back there and I think the path towards potentially being
00:42 part of the reason why is certainly something alluring to Arch. He went outside of that
00:48 traditional SEC footprint unlike his uncle, so I thought that was a big part of it. From the
00:53 beginning, it was like Ole Miss and Tennessee were never really a part of this thing, at least
00:59 in the last six months. And I think that told you Arch was going to do his own thing. So I do think
01:04 that it takes a lot of gravitas to do it at a school like Texas where the expectation is almost
01:10 always higher than the reality. So I think Arch from the beginning really wanted to carve his own
01:15 path. And look, Texas has some inexperienced quarterbacks on the roster. They're about to
01:20 move into the SEC. There's a lot going on there. So I think he's confident in his own ability to
01:25 potentially craft that party and see the field pretty early once he does get to Austin for good.
01:31 So huge decision, huge win for Steve Sarkeesian as well.
01:34 Huge win for Steve Sarkeesian. As we both know, he's trying to build something really great
01:39 at Texas. How fast do you think Arch Manning can help turn things around for the Longhorns?
01:45 Yeah, that's a great question. I think a lot of that depends on Quinn Ewers this year in 2022.
01:50 He's only a second year player. So if he does well enough to sustain the job, then he'll be
01:55 the favorite to keep that job going into '23 when Arch gets there. But as we know, these number one
02:02 quarterbacks don't sit long, right? Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence. I mean, you could roll through
02:07 the entire list. They don't sit more than a year. So I think '23 into '24, it could get pretty dicey
02:14 for Texas. But there's a lot of talent. And I think that's at the foundation of what you want
02:19 from a coaching perspective. You want to breed that competition. And certainly Ewers and Manning
02:24 will be able to do that for years to come. And I think physically, Arch is pretty much ready to go.
02:30 He'll be a four-year high school starter by the time he gets there. I saw him a few months ago,
02:35 and he looks like Andrew Luck on the hoof in terms of his physical build. Well-proportioned upper and
02:41 lower half. We know about the mechanics and the production on Friday nights. And he is ready to go
02:47 at the collegiate level, as we've seen. It's not just the last name. So it's going to be fascinating
02:53 to see that quarterback room as it's tied to Sarkisian and A.J. Millie evolve with some big
02:59 names and really kind of gravitational personalities with Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning in particular. So
03:06 a lot of eyes will be on Texas. There always are a lot of eyes, but I think even more so now.
