00:00I never want to hear major college athletes referred to as students again, at least not
00:09regular students.
00:10And sorry, student athlete doesn't quite cut it.
00:13Because as we've known, but see so clearly now in the midst of current circumstances,
00:18college sports, particularly football, are a vital revenue source for the system and
00:24universities.
00:25So it's a sham to pretend the participants within are getting more out of the college
00:28experience than they are delivering by being on the field, which has been made apparent
00:33through the clear push by the top conferences to make sure a football season happens in
00:38the midst of the pandemic.
00:39This has some players expressed concern about safety on a call with the SEC, while a group
00:44from the Pac-12 threatened to skip the season if a list of demands are not met, including
00:49a 50% share of football revenue.
00:52I'm not calling for the cancellation of the season because I'm sure there are many athletes
00:55who still want to be out there and there are many factors at play.
00:59However, as we've already seen through MLB and know that playing football due to the
01:03nature of the sport, roster sizes and any interactions with the campus at large, there's
01:08almost no way to avoid some spread of the virus.
01:11And there simply has to be some difference in standards when it comes to the resumption
01:15of professional sports and those where the participants aren't being paid.
01:19Ultimately, I think this will serve as a reckoning for the entire NCAA structure, for real this
01:24time.
01:25Because it doesn't take a college degree to see how much of the higher education system
01:30is built on the back of student-athletes.
