Casey Holman: Duke needs to improve effort

To turn around its 0-3 start, Duke needs to play with more effort, tackle Casey Holman says. That means focusing on blocking from first to last step.

00:00 It was a little warmer outside, but we had to get it done.
00:03 We got to win the game on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday before we even
00:05 play on Saturday.
00:06 Well, like you said, we had to look at it with fine tooth comb.
00:10 We had to get out there, understand what we did right and
00:13 transfer that over to what we did wrong.
00:15 We had a lot of positives out there and
00:18 although the outcome didn't show it, there was some really good stuff.
00:21 On those negative plays, we got to focus in and figure out what we did good on
00:25 the other plays and how we can carry that over to the bad plays,
00:28 whether that's effort, whether that's technique, execution and things like that.
00:32 It varies from play to play.
00:34 Mostly what we've seen is a lot of effort.
00:36 We have to finish blocks, finish is huge around here and
00:39 that's mostly what we got to do.
00:40 We got to get the first step right and we got to finish through the last steps.
00:44 So it's from the first step to the last steps, we got to be better.
00:46 Well, certainly we didn't expect it.
00:48 We expected to come out and compete every game and
00:51 ultimately win every game is our goal.
00:53 Last year our mentality was to focus on it and
00:57 not look back and this year I think we need to focus on that.
01:00 And not an aspect of wallow in it, but
01:03 we need to really remember how we feel after those games.
01:06 Being up, going into the fourth quarter, we need to really focus on how that felt and
01:10 how it felt after the game and carry that over,
01:12 because we don't want to feel that again.
01:14 You never have enough time.
01:16 We're always finding time, we're limited on time,
01:19 especially with what's going on this year.
01:21 We have to mesh better and we have to do that in practice and outside of practice.
01:27 We don't mesh in games, that's when we have to show that we are meshed together and
01:30 like you said, become that five group unit.
01:34 So we have to do that outside in practice, outside of practice,
01:37 build those relationships, but ultimately play together as a team on Tuesday,
01:42 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, before we even step in our uniforms on Saturday.
