Duke had a shortened preseason with very little live scrimmaging. Because of that, the run and pass games both showed timing problems in the opener. David Cutcliffe thinks both will improve.

00:00 >> I think certainly it's always gonna be a part of blocking and seeing holes.
00:05 I think part of it, I think we missed some opportunities out there,
00:09 left some yards on the field.
00:12 Particularly in our draw game, our counter game,
00:16 I thought we ran the stretch pretty well.
00:19 But I really think we left some yards on the field where we finished blocks or
00:24 see holes.
00:25 But Jim, I would say a big part of that is we've had very little live running
00:30 the football.
00:31 And the environment we've had for camp and
00:34 the circumstances that have been put upon us, the way you get better and better.
00:39 And I think we're gonna run the ball well this year, but
00:41 the way you get better at running the football is doing it.
00:44 And it's gotta be some of it live to get your timing.
00:47 And so I think we learned a little bit more about ourselves and
00:51 we'll be better this week than we were a week ago.
00:54 >> Well, I don't think there's any question what's happened with him is about
00:59 eight days before that he becomes number one.
01:01 And we didn't get enough live scrimmaging with him as the number one quarterback.
01:06 And just getting a feel for the timing, the mechanism,
01:10 the progression that we have in the passing game, the pre-snap reads will be
01:15 better.
01:16 I think right now he's starting to feel ownership of the offense.
01:21 And that's what you have to do as a starting quarterback.
01:24 It's gotta become yours, you gotta be the owner.
01:27 And I think he's well on his way to becoming that, but
01:31 I thought he played like a quarterback.
01:33 And I thought he made throws that are just big time throws, and
01:37 he made some great decisions out there.
01:40 And then the other part of it that you can't make mistakes with the football.
01:45 What we call ball security has gotta be the premium for
01:49 every snap is a quarterback.
