Last season, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said that he thought the Irish could be even better this year. Preparing for the opener against Duke, he sees plenty of positives.

00:00 Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of things to like about, you know, when you look at the basic
00:04 tenets of your football team, right?
00:06 The ability to run the football, to have a veteran quarterback back, certainly from a
00:13 defensive structure, one where your system is in place, you know, you feel like you have
00:21 the ability to stop the run.
00:23 And then on the perimeter, I think we're better than we were last year in a sense that we
00:29 have, you know, the safety and the corner position has evolved.
00:35 So coming into the season when your special teams now is returning, you feel really good
00:41 about where you are, but you know, you got to go play the games.
00:44 And we were in a different place this year in terms of our preparation than when I made
00:49 that comment in December.
00:50 There were a lot of different things that have occurred.
00:53 We didn't have spring practice, which I don't know that anybody's really going to be able
00:58 to tell what that does in terms of the effect of your football team, particular in these
01:05 early games.
01:06 I think the second thing is, you know, we didn't get all of our practices in, quite
01:10 frankly, and I don't know who will.
01:13 I mean, but there are those distractions that we had to, you know, obviously go through
01:21 and other teams will have those same distractions.
01:24 But my point being is those weren't in play in December, but the basic tenets of having
01:31 a really good football team, potentially a great football team, are in place, and now
01:38 we're going to have to go prove it.
