Women's basketball coach Kara Lawson came to Duke from the NBA Bubble, where she was working with the Celtics. She's not sure a bubble would be feasible in college, however.

00:00I hadn't really thought of that.
00:04I think the bubble for the NBA, I think,
00:12worked because of the or is working
00:15because of the small number of teams.
00:18So I think the challenge would be in college basketball
00:22to have it be a small number of teams
00:25if you were going to do it.
00:27The other challenge is these are in college basketball,
00:33they're in class, they have academic requirements.
00:36Some of them, depending on the school, are in person.
00:38Some are not.
00:41I think that could present some logistical challenges, too,
00:45unless you were doing it when they weren't in school
00:47or you had a group of schools
00:49that didn't have to be in person.
00:50But if you were going to do a bubble
00:52when you look at the quarantine
00:54and then you look at the length of time
00:56that players would need to be in the bubble,
00:58you'd have to look at how you would get around.
01:02I wouldn't say get around, but how you would be able
01:05to accommodate the academic piece for the college athletes.
01:11And then, obviously, there's a lot more teams in college
01:14than there are in the NBA,
01:16and both women's college and men's college.
01:21So that could be a challenge.
01:24Maybe postseason, it's a shorter period of time,
01:27and there's a smaller number of teams.
01:29So that might be an opportunity to do something like that.
01:34Well, they're two different leagues,
01:36obviously, pro and college.
01:38But from what I've observed in my time in the game,
01:42there's a lot of things that are similar.
01:45There's a lot of things that translate.
01:47There's a lot of common themes that you find that pop up
01:51amongst great teams in college and at the pro level.
01:54You know, our team, for instance, in Boston,
01:57the reason why we were a good team
01:59was because we were very disciplined
02:02and we paid attention to detail.
02:04And we had guys that were very committed
02:08on the defensive end of the floor.
02:09And they're talented players,
02:11but they're very committed on that end.
02:13And I think if you watch the NBA,
02:15you'll find that when it gets down to the final eight,
02:18the final four, the final two teams,
02:21you're seeing teams that are really committed
02:24on the defensive end of the floor.
02:26And that, I think, is true at any level.
02:31That, I think, is something that I'll try to bring,
02:35just the discipline that it takes to win at an elite level.
02:40You have to have it. It's not a shortcut to that.
02:42You have to be a very disciplined,
02:44intelligent team to be able to win games
02:47and to be able to advance far in the postseason.
