Duke co-defensive coordinator Matt Guerrieri is always high energy and optimistic, but he's even moreso, thanks to depth and talent at edge rusher and the secondary, which will allow him to get creative with defensive schemes.

00:08love to do with the people we love to do it with and it's been awesome to see our
00:12defense and our team running around with great energy and enthusiasm and
00:16definitely unique 2020 but one that we've been you know obviously with Coach
00:21Cutcliffe's plan been working towards for a long time now and we're really
00:24excited to be here today. You know how we look at defense is okay how do we stop
00:28the run how do we rush the passer how do we defend the pass right if you're
00:30just going to simplify it into those things and we definitely have some guys
00:33that have real juice off the edge for us and you have to take advantage of those
00:38guys whether it's separate on opposite sides or on the same side and how we can
00:43game plan to take advantage of of those guys whether it's Vic or Chris and or a
00:47number of other guys Drew Jordan I mean we've got a lot of guys that have have
00:50played a bunch of snaps and then you obviously you mentioned you've got depth
00:53in the back end right and and guys that have proven Mark Gilbert Michael Carter
00:57Josh Blackwell Leonard Johnson Marquise Waters these guys that have proven to be
01:00good coverage players in the back so blending those together no doubt right
01:05where's the risk reward as far as being able to play tight coverage and rush the
01:08passer so I think you'll see a number of packages that continue to try to exploit
01:12those things from you know exploiting an offensive standpoint and then
01:15highlighting our defensive strengths. You know I think that we've recruited well
01:19at both of those positions and I think you're gonna see a number of guys play
01:23at those spots that you may not have seen in the past too you know whether it's
01:27young guys like Dwayne Carter Christian Rory Aeneas Peebles has flashed from
01:31when he came here as a mid-year you know there's a number of guys that have have
01:34done a really good job inside there and then obviously at linebacker as well you
01:39know and front wise obviously of Derek Tangelo in the middle and you've got
01:41Chaka Hayward both those guys are battle-tested but a linebacker too you've
01:45got a youth of young guys Christian Hood who was here as a mid-year Doreen Mauzzi
01:48who's flashed in this camp so there's a number of guys and Ben Albert and
01:52Lanier Goethe are two of the best in the business at making sure those guys will
01:55be ready to rock but definitely we've been operating by committee you know
01:59here early in camp and we'll continue to grow those guys up.
