Javonte Williams speaks to the media following the Tar Heels' 48-21 victory over NC State.
Transcript
00:00 >> Hey, Javante, congrats on the win.
00:03 I wanna talk about your rushing game again.
00:06 You and Michael combined for over 260 yards in the ground, four touchdowns.
00:10 State's defense had done a great job against the rush coming into this game.
00:14 What kind of opened things up for
00:15 you guys in the field to allow you and Michael to be so successful?
00:19 >> I really think it's just our connection with the O line.
00:22 We got a really good connection with those guys.
00:24 They did a great job today blocking and communicating.
00:27 And the coaches had a great scheme.
00:29 And we just did a good job of executing.
00:30 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:35 >> All right, let's go over to Bridget Conant.
00:37 Go ahead, Bridget.
00:37 >> Did you feel like after last week you didn't get the plays you guys wanted or
00:44 the result you wanted and
00:45 you felt like you had to come out here and prove something today?
00:47 And going off that, Matt Brown just said, in a lot of these games,
00:50 it's whoever wins the rushing battle that wins the game.
00:53 Did you think about that going in?
00:56 >> Yes, ma'am.
00:57 We never wanna lose, but the loss last week,
00:59 it gave us a little boost this week.
01:00 We knew we had to go out and play hard the whole game.
01:03 Cuz I feel like last week we waited a little too late.
01:05 And we didn't have enough time to come back.
01:07 So the main thing this week was just coming out playing hard early and
01:10 just knowing we had to do the win.
01:11 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:14 >> All right, let's go over to Ross Martin.
01:15 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:18 >> Excuse me.
01:19 Hey, Javante, why do you think you're so good at getting yards after contact?
01:24 What about your running style allows you to get past so
01:28 many tackles and whatnot?
01:31 >> I think it's really just low pass.
01:33 We preach that at practice every day, keeping our pass low.
01:36 And that's just something I always try to do when I'm running the ball,
01:38 just stay lower than the defender.
01:39 And they usually help me bounce off.
01:42 >> How would you describe your running style?
01:43 >> Well, like a comparison to somebody or?
01:47 >> No, just adjectives and what adjectives?
01:49 >> Physical, yeah, just physical.
01:53 >> Okay, thank you.
01:54 >> Hey, Brennan Marks, go ahead.
01:57 >> Hey, Javante, two questions for you.
02:01 One, as of right now,
02:02 you have the most touchdowns in the country of any non quarterback.
02:07 What does that sort of mean to you?
02:08 And what does that say about the journey you've made since you first arrived
02:12 in Chapel Hill?
02:13 >> It really just says a lot about my confidence.
02:16 My confidence has grown since I got here.
02:18 It also is a testament to the O line and also Mike and
02:22 every other player on the team cuz I couldn't do it by myself.
02:26 >> And I also wanted to follow up with what Ross was saying.
02:28 Would you say that you prefer to run somebody over or
02:31 to juke somebody sort of out of their shoes?
02:33 >> I would juke, but I guess running over, it just happens.
02:37 >> Thank you.
02:38 >> All right, let's go to Greg Barnes.
02:41 >> Hey, Javante, what is the emotional value of breaking a tackle and
02:49 seeing Sam Howe have a pancake block and Emory Simmons breaking through tackles?
02:54 >> That's just, it's exciting.
02:58 It gives everybody confidence, even the defense.
02:59 You can see them on the sideline cheering.
03:02 That just gives everybody a boost and it helps us play a whole lot better.
03:05 >> Thank you.
03:06 >> All right, Luke Dukak, go ahead, Luke.
03:11 >> Hey, Javante, I think that's seven touchdowns for
03:13 you now in your career against NC State.
03:16 Is that a coincidence at all or
03:18 do you have something that you save for these guys?
03:22 >> No, it's not, I don't really save none.
03:23 It's just, I don't know, it just happened against NC State all the time.
03:27 I don't know, but I'm thankful.
03:28 >> All right, Gregory Hall, go ahead.
03:34 >> Javante, I know Ross wanted adjectives, but now I'm curious what your comparison
03:40 for yourself is to the running backs.
03:45 >> Probably Todd Gregory.
03:45 >> Why do you say that?
03:48 >> Just I watched him a lot when I was growing up and I feel like he's physical and
03:53 he can run away from people sometimes too.
03:55 >> Thank you.
03:57 >> Last one for Javante comes from CL Brown, go ahead, CL.
04:02 >> Hi, Javante, Coach Brown just said that you guys aren't necessarily a loud bunch
04:07 and sometimes it's maybe hard to get a read on if y'all are ready to play.
04:13 What signs let you know that you guys were ready to play today?
04:17 Like what do you look for in terms of emotionally speaking to see if you guys
04:23 are ready?
04:24 >> It's really in the locker room, I just see like everybody playing around like
04:27 smiling, laughing, dancing to the music, things like that.
04:30 When I see that, I just know everybody ready to play.
04:32 >> And so that I'm assuming so that's what it was today?
04:37 >> Yes, sir.
04:38 >> With the moves like that?
04:40 >> Yes, sir.
04:42 >> All right, thanks, man.
04:44 >> Appreciate it.
04:45 >> All right, Javante, thank you, sir.
04:46 All right.
