NCAA is working on plans for football to return
Transcript
00:00 We're starting to see more of a plan for a professional sports return, but what about
00:05 college?
00:06 Obviously, circumstances are different there for a number of reasons.
00:09 For more on college football, I'm joined now by Ross Dellinger.
00:12 Now, Ross, I understand that practices may resume as soon as early July with coaches
00:17 involved and all.
00:19 Yeah, you know, right now, for all of June and probably the first couple weeks of July,
00:24 we're just having voluntary workouts.
00:27 So strength staff can supervise coaches like assistant coaches, you know, receivers, coaches,
00:33 coordinators.
00:34 They can't do anything.
00:35 They can't even really watch workouts.
00:37 They're not supposed to.
00:38 But come mid to late July, a preseason plan is coming together that includes even walkthroughs
00:46 with a football by even mid-July.
00:49 So this week, the NCAA should take a big step forward in approving a plan that would kind
00:54 of start.
00:55 It's kind of like a six to eight week preseason plan that would kind of start around mid-July.
01:01 For some schools, even maybe even early July will allow coaches to start working with players.
01:06 What about the season itself?
01:08 How many games do we expect to see played?
01:10 Will it be different for each team?
01:12 Will it be different for the conferences?
01:13 How's that all going to shake out?
01:16 It could.
01:17 You know, we could have teams that play a different amount of games.
01:21 You know, they might miss a game or two because of a virus outbreak.
01:25 In fact, I think a lot of officials around college football expect that.
01:30 They certainly expect preseason practice and camp in August to have some interruptions
01:37 and some delays because of the viral outbreak.
01:40 You know, right now, the plan is to start the season on time, but certainly not everybody
01:46 might do that just because of potential virus outbreaks.
01:51 So is the plan as outlined universal for all of Division One, or will there be specific
01:57 differences depending on the geographic location, the makeup of the school and whatnot?
02:03 Well, the preseason plan is universal.
02:06 It's across all NCAA schools, but everybody might not start at the same time.
02:12 So you're allowed to start potentially second week of July in this preseason plan.
02:17 But there are some schools, because of their state regulations and how the virus impacted
02:21 their area, that they might not start in the second or third week of July.
02:25 It might be a little later than that.
02:27 And of course, again, you could have an interruption.
02:29 You could start up in mid-July and have an interruption in late July or early August.
02:35 Big part of this plan is you have to practice four weeks in order to start your first game.
02:43 And that's a big part of this, because some schools, you never know, because of virus
02:47 things that happen, outbreaks, they might not get that practice in.
02:50 And if they don't, they can't start the season on time.
02:54 And that would lead to some interesting ramifications.
02:58 Of course, safety first, obviously.
03:00 But we'll see what happens with the college football season.
03:02 Ross, appreciate your time, as always.
03:04 Sure.
