We know this Major League Baseball season will be different. That is apparent already. However, it was always going to be unique given it is a shortened 60 games. So what could that mean for records and benchmarks that might be reached? Sports Illustrated host Robin Lundberg talked with SI baseball writer Emma Baccellieri and Max Goodman of InsidethePinstripes to get their thoughts on what accomplishments we might see in MLB.

00:00 We know this MLB season will be different over 60 games,
00:05 but what can be accomplished in that short time span?
00:09 For more on that, I'm joined by our Emma Bacheleri
00:11 and Max Goodman of Inside the Pinstripes.
00:14 And guys, this lends itself to perhaps
00:16 some quirky records, if you will.
00:18 What could we see happen in a 60 game season?
00:21 Emma, let's start with you.
00:22 You know, I'm gonna be more interested
00:24 in what we see with pitching here,
00:26 just because I think that that's a bigger challenge
00:27 because of how little time they had to ramp up here,
00:30 how uncertain the whole hiatus was,
00:33 you know, the injury risk.
00:34 There's just a lot going on there
00:36 that's going to make me more impressed
00:38 by, you know, really great pitching.
00:39 So even something like seeing someone
00:42 win all 12 of his games would be pretty impressive.
00:45 I think it's possible that, you know,
00:47 if we see someone threaten a record
00:49 like Bob Gibson's ERA record,
00:51 putting something up, you know,
00:53 under 2.0, under 1.5 would be really cool.
00:56 And I think that's really what I'm gonna be focused on
00:58 is potentially the most exciting stuff here.
01:00 Yeah, Max, it's almost those pace records
01:02 that we're used to seeing, like,
01:03 oh, this guy is on pace to do this.
01:05 And then sometimes the 162 game season
01:08 wears that down a little bit.
01:09 What are you looking at?
01:10 Right, well, I'll preface this by saying I'm with Emma.
01:13 And the consensus from Yankee summer camp
01:15 was that pitchers are far ahead of hitters.
01:18 But in terms of this regular season,
01:20 we've got 60 games to work with.
01:21 And the record for the most home runs
01:23 in a 60 game span is 33.
01:26 I believe, and a couple people have been right over 30.
01:29 But in terms of the pace for an 162 game season,
01:32 I don't know if the home run record
01:34 will necessarily be broken.
01:36 But hey, the likes of Giancarlo Stan,
01:38 who's hit over 30 in his MVP season in 2017
01:41 in a 60 game span, he's got two homers in three games.
01:44 But then you gotta factor in the postponed games
01:48 and potentially different players
01:49 testing positive for the coronavirus.
01:51 So it remains to be seen,
01:53 but a lot of home runs will definitely be hit this season.
01:56 That's for sure.
01:56 - Yeah, I don't think anyone's hitting 73
01:58 in a 60 game season, but if you get to 30,
02:01 that'd be pretty impressive to me.
02:03 Max, Emma, appreciate your time.
