The 2020 MLB season seems to be getting closer to starting after the owners agreed on a proposal - the major sticking point is going to be money, and if the players are willing to take less of it for a shortened season.

00:00 People have been looking at baseball in Asia as a possible road back for MLB, but
00:12 the comparison falls apart when you start to think about scale. The KBO in
00:17 Korea has only 10 teams and the greatest distance between them is a 50-minute
00:22 plane ride. The CPBL in Taiwan has only five teams and the greatest distance
00:28 between them 180 miles. MLB has 30 teams with 40 man rosters and they are
00:35 scattered around a huge country. The better comp might be the German
00:40 Bundesliga which has 38 teams in two divisions. They intend to restart their
00:47 season on May 16th. They have been practicing under strict social
00:51 distancing guidelines and frequent testing. Well during the testing phase
00:56 two players on the Dynamo Dresden tested positive and that means the entire team,
01:03 players and staff were sent to quarantine for two weeks. No training, no
01:09 games. Now imagine that scenario in MLB. Now we're talking about not three or
01:16 four games but 12 games over two weeks. That would be 15% of an 81 game season.
01:23 And what would pitchers do for a two-week period where they can't train?
01:28 Now you begin to understand why the road back is not easy.
