Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse will be forced to change play calling without fans in NBA arenas
Transcript
00:00 Raptors coach Nick Nurse might want to see what John Gibbons is up to these days.
00:05 Playing an arena without fans forces coaches to use sign language and that
00:09 sounds like a job for a baseball coach. It wasn't long into last night's game that
00:14 Nurse realized just how tricky it is coaching without fans.
00:18 I think it was the first possession we got fouled and and Houston lined up in
00:23 their kind of full court free after free throw formation and I got up to kind of
00:28 direct traffic on how to guard that and I caught myself stopping about halfway
00:33 through because like all ten players were listening to me instead of instead
00:38 of just my five I think when there's crowd music your guys are used to kind
00:42 of hearing you and that was noticeable that you maybe are not going to be able
00:48 to just work out whatever you want to whatever you want to do and if you do
00:52 they're gonna know right they're gonna they're gonna hear it. For the players
00:56 playing without fans let them focus in on the game. I kind of think without
01:01 having fans it kind of gives you an opportunity to focus just a little bit
01:05 more you know sometimes even when you sit on a bench not having fans there
01:09 kind of makes you have to focus on you know everything that's going on.
01:13 Siakam said his only concern was keeping the team's energy up without the crowd.
01:18 I think it's just we just got to figure out a way to give each other energy and
01:23 I think the bench is gonna be important or wherever you whenever you're on the
01:27 bench you know just having that energy to kind of like boost your teammates.
01:31 Nurse will have another chance to figure out his signs tomorrow night when the
01:35 Raptors return for their second scrimmage game this time against the
01:39 Portland Trail Blazers.
