Raptors guard Fred VanVleet is more concerned about Breonna Taylor's killers being free than what he is and isn't allowed to put on his jersey
Transcript
00:00Raptors coach Nick Nurse paused for a moment last night while speaking about Fred VanVleet.
00:05"'He's wise beyond his years,' Nurse said.
00:08"'He's got an incredible basketball.'"
00:10And then he paused.
00:11"'You don't have to qualify it.
00:13He's got an incredible mind, period,' Nurse said."
00:17VanVleet certainly does have a brilliant basketball mind.
00:21He and Nurse talk all the time about basketball, including during crunch time, when Nurse said
00:25he knows he can go to the always-calm VanVleet when things get hectic.
00:30But it's VanVleet's off-the-court mind that's maybe even more impressive.
00:35When asked about the NBA's decision to permit players to wear social justice statements
00:39from a pre-approved list when the NBA season returns, VanVleet said he disagreed with the
00:44decision, but ultimately wasn't losing sleep over it.
00:48"'Breonna Taylor's killers are still walking around and living a very free life,' VanVleet
00:52said.
00:53"'I think there are other things that we can worry about more so than what we're putting
00:57on the back of our jerseys.'"
00:59It's that kind of real change that VanVleet said he really cares about, and probably why
01:04Nick Nurse backtracked last night when talking about VanVleet's brilliance.
