Former Toronto Raptor Bruno Caboclo is no longer two years away from being two years away
Transcript
00:00 Not a lot of people knew who Bruno Cabloco was when he was drafted back in 2014.
00:07 He was the youngest player in his class at only 18 years old and never even saw an NBA
00:13 game until a couple of years before being drafted in the first round.
00:18 Joining me now is SI's writer Will Laws.
00:21 Well, Cabloco is being compared to Kevin Durant despite having just played basketball for
00:26 a few years.
00:27 He struggled a bit entering the NBA.
00:30 Would his career have taken off if he had waited a year or two before entering the draft?
00:36 Yeah, Bruno told me that is something he's thought about.
00:39 Maybe he would have commanded some more respect from draft analysts and fans alike.
00:44 There's that infamous quote from an ESPN draft analyst that he was two years away from being
00:48 two years away when he was drafted.
00:50 And that's something that sort of followed him throughout his career as he's gone on.
00:55 You know, he only started playing basketball when he was 13 years old and he's in a lot
00:58 of ways he's still finding himself as a player right now.
01:01 So maybe a couple more years abroad would have helped him out a little bit.
01:06 We've definitely seen flashes, though, of his potential and now he's got this position
01:10 changed.
01:11 Do you think he could excel with a new team, new position?
01:13 Right.
01:14 Yeah, the Grizzlies, he had a little breakout season with the Grizzlies last year, but then
01:18 a new coaching staff came in, wanted him to change positions to be more of a small ball
01:22 center instead of a power forward.
01:24 He didn't really get much of a chance to prove himself.
01:27 He felt like he didn't really get a fair shot in Memphis this year, but he did end up being
01:30 traded to Houston, which is in a playoff spot right now.
01:34 And they've been giving him some more time right before the coronavirus pandemic necessitated
01:39 the suspension of the league.
01:40 But he has a chance to come back in here whenever the league starts back up and get some playing
01:45 time for a playoff team and really kind of enhance his standing around the year around
01:49 the league and, you know, have this sort of second shot to prove himself.
01:52 All right.
01:53 Well, hopefully he can do that.
01:55 Well, thank you so much for your insight on this.
01:57 Really appreciate it.
01:58 Of course.
01:59 Thank you, Caitlin.
01:59 Thank you.
02:00 Thank you.
