Tasmanians reflect on the shadow of war in honour of Anzacs

Around Tasmania in communities large and small thousands assembled to commemorate Anzac Day. As Tasmanians honoured those who fought and fell in past wars, the shadow of current conflicts was also acknowledged.

00:00 With the moon lighting their path, thousands made their way to the Hobart Cenotaph before dawn.
00:08 We remember with compassion those who suffer as a result of war and those who continue to mourn those whose lives were lost.
00:23 On the 109th anniversary of Australian and New Zealand soldiers landing at Gallipoli, people reflected on past wars and present ones.
00:33 We remember the ongoing human cost of war to all nations.
00:39 Many in the crowd wore medals.
00:45 It belongs to my grandfather who we knew as Papa.
00:50 I was conscripted into the army on Australia Day '72.
00:55 That's towards the end of the Vietnam War.
00:58 St Mary's College student Hannah Lucas has attended a dawn service every year since she was a baby.
01:05 As you get older, and especially being an ADF kid, you sort of realise the importance of this day.
01:11 And I think that it starts to become more of a very sentimental and special day for everyone.

01:18 At St Helen's, veterans marched to the service.
01:21 Hundreds braving the autumn cold to pay their respects.
01:27 We cannot bring back those who gave their lives for Australia, but we can remember their sacrifice.
01:34 Many continued on to a gunfire breakfast at the local bistro.

01:41 Very proud. We all bond together. We are a very close veteran community.
01:48 Here in Hobart and at towns across the state, the streets are taken over in a display of respect and honour.

02:00 We've come from Melbourne today, so we planned to come to the Anzac Parade. It's been amazing.
02:05 It's important to show the kids, the people that have represented our country, and pay our respects.
02:11 Wing Commander Jenny Robertson is the first female state president of Tasmania's RAAF Association.
02:20 These days, yes, the women are certainly out there.
02:24 And of course our role models for those up and coming women that would like to emulate them.
02:33 And a final service at midday to honour their sacrifices.
02:37 We also remember that major wars are being waged in the Ukraine and in Gaza.
02:43 A day where the shadow of current wars was never far from people's minds.
