Spice Girl Mel B gives out advice to customers as she dries hair at Leeds salon

Popstar Mel B has given free blow dries in her home city - as she tells women they 'need to educate themselves' on abuse.

The 48-year-old singer spent Sunday (April 28) washing competition winner's hair at her fiancé Rory McPhee's salon in Leeds, West Yorks,.

The women had won a competition to meet Scary Spice, have their hair styled and take home a signed copy of Brutally Honest - her book about her abusive marriage.

The singer has now said that women 'need to educate themselves' on abuse, so they 'don't fall for any of it.'

Mel said: "It’s important that we get that message out there that abuse against women needs to stop.

"We need to educate ourselves and stand proud and not fall for any of it.

"Abusers will carry on abusing until they have to stop."

Mel had just arrived from London after attending Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party the previous evening.

But she says she's glad she's now back in her hometown because she can get her 'proper fish and chips and scraps.'

She said: "I just love the fact I can now get my proper fish and chips and scraps.

"The people of Leeds know what I’m talking about."

00:00 Today we're at the Rory James Salon. I'm fortunate to be his fiancé, or he's fortunate to be my fiancé.
00:10 And it's Rory's day off, so I thought, what can we do on Rory's day off?
00:15 I can invite some competition winners and we can do their hair and make them feel beautiful and glammed up.
00:21 Yeah. So we're here today, we've got six competition winners.
00:25 They all entered and then they were allowed to bring their plus one. And I do a shampoo that's getting better every time I do it.
00:35 And then Rory does his professional thing and then I claim that I've done everything.
00:41 The paperback, the new version, was released last month.
00:45 The Chief Executive of Women's Aid in particular said it's saving women's lives.
00:49 What does it mean to you to have that feedback for the book?
00:52 I think it's important that we get that message out there that, you know, abuse of women, which predominantly happens to women, it needs to stop.
01:00 So we need to educate ourselves and we need to stand proud and not fall for any of that anymore.
01:09 Because, you know, abusers, they will try and abuse you until they stop.
01:13 And that's why this book is so important. Get it, educate yourselves and be aware because they're out there.
