00:00There should be no concern about the quality of medical specialists from the Parallel Pathway
00:07program given the high standards they must meet for certification, says a senator.
00:13Dr. R.A. Lingeswaran said the health ministry also had a six-month gazettement process to
00:19vet the quality of the budding specialists before they are registered.
00:23Lingeswaran, a former director of the Soya Bakap Hospital in Penang, said this ensures
00:28all graduates, regardless of whether they are from local master's programs or foreign
00:33fellowships, meet a certain set of standards.
00:37On Wednesday, Perikatan Nasional's R.O.M.P, Shahidan Qasim, claimed that amendments to
00:42the Medical Act 1971 would see an increase in the number of medical specialists in Malaysia
00:48but also less consistency in their overall quality.
00:51He said the Malaysia Medical Council should not have the ultimate power to recognize specialists,
00:56calling instead for prospective specialists to go through the Malaysian Qualifications
01:01Agency before the MMC.
01:03Meanwhile, former Deputy Health Minister Dr. Lee Boon Chye said the Malaysian Qualifications
01:08Agency's recognition can be part of the requirement but maintained that it should not be mandatory.
01:15The cardiologist said the additional MQA requirement would be counterintuitive since Malaysia was
01:20still facing a serious shortage of specialists.
