During her visit to the site where a massive tree fell along Jalan Sultan Ismail in the city centre on Tuesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had been instructed to come up with new guidelines to manage the city's ageing trees and prevent future accidents.

She said the urgency of cataloguing older trees, many of which are between 50 and 80 years old, was more pressing now than ever due to unpredictable weather conditions.

00:00If we look at this tree, it looks like it's an old tree.
00:12Most of the trees in DBKL, in Kuala Lumpur, are old trees that are more than 50 years old.
00:19So for now, as we know, this tree is under surveillance by the private sector.
00:28We also see that there is a need for us to look at the guidelines for the maintenance of trees around Kuala Lumpur
00:38so that we can avoid accidents in the future, God willing.
00:42So that's what we expect we will do freshly.
00:46Do you often do tree monitoring?
00:48We do tree monitoring often.
00:50For example, this tree is in the IMC area.
00:57So they are directly connected to the DBKL Landscape Department.
01:05And the monitoring is done in two years.
01:08Two years at a time.
01:10With the aborigines registered with DBKL.
01:15That is indeed monitored.
01:17How many trees are there?
01:19There are trees that are more than 50 years old.
01:2250 to 80 years old.
01:24I think it's time, in this uncertain weather,
01:29even though sometimes we see that the trees are still firm,
01:33but maybe we have to have a guideline to ensure that the trees that are old,
01:39we do something to ensure the safety of the road users and the surrounding users.
01:48Usually if there is a problem or an accident like this,
01:52DBKL will certainly take action.
01:56From the point of view, we also look at the profile and so on.
02:02Usually we do have a little help.
02:06And maybe they have insurance or something.
02:08And that we will refer back to the responsible parties.
02:12If there is a problem or an accident, will you provide assistance?
02:17God willing, we will provide assistance.
02:21Usually we will provide assistance.
02:23How much we will see first.
