Amazing scenes as Sunderland celebrated Victory in Europe in 1945.

00:00They danced, sang, cheered, for the first time in years. On May the 8th, 1945, the people
00:10of Sunderland were out on the streets to hear the news they had longed for. Germany had
00:16surrendered unconditionally in the Second World War. It was Victory in Europe Day, and
00:22it meant that vast swathes of people gathering like they hadn't done in years. They rejoiced
00:29in Mowbray Park. They massed in Fawcett Street to hear the official declaration. And most
00:37of all, they smiled. They mingled with police officers, and everyone smiled in sheer relief.
