01:49 He's trying to cut down and chop down the taller man like a tree.
01:52 >> Definitely got the right idea on how to fight a taller man, dig it down to the body
01:55 of the left hook as Gavilan tried to slide out to his right.
01:59 >> That was a little bit awkward, even a little bit uncoordinated, dare I say.

02:28 And being unorthodox and being a little awkward and being tall isn't necessarily a bad thing.

02:33 I'm still trying to figure out how Gavilan is going to make it work for him.
02:36 But right now Mary Weather is off to a pretty good start.

02:40 He's pawing it out there, but not using it in a way to keep Mary Weather off him.
02:44 >> Gavilan actually almost fighting as if he's the small man.
02:48 A lot of movement and cutting angles, but not a whole lot of jabs.
02:52 >> You can see Mary Weather is coming with the mentality to take charge of the ring and

03:03 And that's what he's been trying to do since the opening bell so far.

04:56 Putting those jabs in when he can.
04:57 That's one thing that a shorter man should do against a taller guy.
04:59 And you can out jab the taller man.

05:04 You see now he double, triple jab on the inside.
05:06 Closed the gap with a speedy double, triple jab.
05:09 Also the explosive first step to force Gala back.

05:15 Great stuff against a taller fighter.
05:18 >> Yeah, these have been the cleanest punches Mary Weather has landed thus far.
05:22 He's been countering well, but just a little bit off with the counters like that.
05:25 Right hook, right uppercut.
05:26 There was some beautiful head movement there.
05:29 >> Crowd appreciating that defense.
05:31 Even gets a smile from Gala.
05:33 >> We have a very educated fan base here.
05:37 You don't necessarily see a lot of applause breaks for head movement, but we just have that.
05:43 >> I'm still trying to figure out exactly what Gala's trying to do.
05:48 Besides obviously trying to win the fight, but I'm trying to figure out his path to victory.

05:55 >> A lot of fighters with that awkward style try to get you to overextend, right?
05:59 To reach a little bit too much.
06:01 And Mary Weather so far not doing that at all.
06:03 >> Yeah, it's actually been Gala who's been overextending and Mary Weather making him pay.
06:07 >> Yeah, you can just see Mary Weather has the better judge of distance.
06:13 Understands how long or tall he is, or Gala does not.

06:20 You see Mary Weather attacks high with that instant quick first step and then drops low to the body.
06:25 So he gets Gala going backwards on that first explosive step.
06:28 And then he drops down to his body instead of reaching out front to the head.

06:37 He understands that legacy.
06:39 Says those are footsteps I want to follow.

06:51 I congratulated her on her son being a very, very nice, respectful man.

07:04 The delivery of his shots in general just looks a lot sharper.

08:21 Didn't get touched with any of that.

08:27 And so far to start round number three, Robert Merriweather III has been doing all of that.
08:32 Both fighters undefeated at five and only two knockouts on Merriweather's record.
08:46 No more for his boxing skill than his punching power.
08:49 You see the volume there.
08:51 It's punches like that.
08:53 Led to his undefeated record.
08:55 >> In his defense, though, of the lack of knockouts, you know, he's been on our air,
09:00 but he's also only 19.
09:02 That muscle maturity takes time, that power.
09:05 >> We call it man strength, you know, that doesn't come until a little bit later.
09:09 He has the speed, he has the skills, he has the footwork.
09:12 Power might develop later.
09:15 >> As you were saying earlier about Gallipoli, it's like you don't see the strategy necessarily.
09:22 He's in the fight.
09:24 He's not getting overwhelmed by any stretch of the imagination, but he hasn't seen his--
09:27 we haven't seen his path to victory yet.
09:29 >> Yeah, yeah, I don't even know if he's seen his path to victory yet.
09:32 He's just kind of throwing and trying to see what sticks.
09:35 I prefer to see fighters that, you know, will kind of have a path to victory in their mind
09:39 already and try to execute it, but he's just kind of just sticking his hands out there,
09:42 throwing punches, sticking his hands out there, and, you know,
09:45 just like throwing something at a wall and seeing what sticks.
09:47 >> Yeah, he's throwing, he's just not making any contact.
09:51 >> Despite being 6 feet tall and having a sizable reach advantage,
09:54 his jab has been a non-factor so far in this fight.
09:57 >> Oh, good left hook there from Gala as Merriweather tried to roll and shoot that uppercut

10:03 >> Well, that stuck a little bit.
10:05 Going back to it again.

10:14 >> Gala, three knockouts in his five wins.
10:20 >> You know, Champ, one thing I remember from Merriweather's last appearance on our air,
10:25 there seemed to be a little gap between the beautiful defensive maneuvers they did
10:28 and then his counters. It seems like he's fixed that here.
10:31 He's firing right away. Hasn't found his mark quite yet, but...
10:35 >> Yeah, and that might be to do with what his mother said to you earlier.
10:39 He might have been rusty last fight.
10:41 Sometimes you don't transition that quick defense to offense and offense to defense
10:44 as smoothly when you're a little rusty. He's been much sharper with that tonight.
10:48 >> That was a nice uppercut on the inside landed by Merriweather.
10:51 Probably the best uppercut he's landed thus far, even though he's thrown many.
10:54 >> He's made it very clear. He said, "I can box. I can fight.
10:58 This isn't just about my skills. I'm willing to step in there and land big punches."
11:02 >> Yeah, Jimmy, you can see he's got that Merriweather athletic style you see in those gyms
11:06 time and time again.

11:11 >> Stepping in a new spot with Trevante Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Jorge Linares.
11:16 You better know what you're doing.

11:22 >> This is weird, because Gala, every time he gets out, he gets out like five miles away.

11:28 >> Well, there's a lot of wasted movement. You see those--he switches his upper body so much.
11:32 He takes big wide-gap steps that are unnecessary.
11:36 There's a lot of wasted movement.
11:38 >> Yeah. And we talk about him maybe taking himself, as we say, out of play, a little too far to land back.
11:43 >> Which burns also a lot of energy.
11:45 A double, triple jab. I like the way Merriweather switches to the hook there.
11:48 He doesn't land a lot cleanly there, but again, showing the good work.
11:51 Here's the attempt at roll counter, and sometimes you got to be careful,
11:54 because the opponent will bring two punches behind there.
11:57 And there Gala brought a little left hook there. Also didn't land cleanly, but landed partially.
12:04 >> This is what we want to see in an up-and-coming, right?
12:06 You see the pieces. He's put it all together. He can really be a top-notch professional.
12:10 You see all the pieces in his offensive defense tonight.
12:13 >> Yeah, he's got the right idea. It's not just quite--it's the execution that's missing so far.
12:18 He's got, like you said, he's got all the pieces, he's got the right idea, he has all the fundamentals,
12:22 and he's just getting it to come together. But again, at 19 years old, it's understandable.
12:27 >> We'll be in round number four.
12:29 >> Ken Gala from Mexico. Get back in this fight. I think anyone with any sense would have Merriweather III
12:37 ahead all three rounds so far.
12:39 >> This is boxing. Not everybody has to--
12:42 >> You see right there, he did a little pivot, and then he went across the whole ring.
12:45 Like, dude, dude.
12:47 >> Hard to counter punch when you're that far out of it.
12:50 >> Yes, yes, exactly. Over and over commitment to defense.
12:52 And he's the taller man, so he actually doesn't need to make as big a defensive move as maybe a Merriweather.
12:57 >> Merriweather, that's my mistake. Merriweather is liable to make--
13:01 >> That's one strike, Paulie.
13:03 >> Yeah, we got a jar here, which you throw a dollar in every time.
13:05 >> Tip, John.
13:06 >> Let's up the ante, boys. Let's do 20.

13:16 >> And, I mean, vice versa. I mean, Merriweather wasting very little, controlling the center of the ring,
13:20 making nice, smooth, slick maneuvers, just making Gala miss.
13:25 >> Merriweather also uses various techniques to defense.
13:28 Sometimes he's catching on the gloves, sometimes he's moving his head, and sometimes he's using his legs.
13:32 Like, he uses his legs to change his range.
13:34 At times, he'll catch and parry on the gloves, and then try to fire back.
13:38 And at times, he's also moved his head.
13:40 We displayed a couple rounds of this little counter there.
13:42 >> You can tell how great a fighter is by how little he missed by, right?
13:45 You just barely miss them. That's why they're always that back of that counter shot.
13:49 >> Jimmy, to your point, the best defensive fighters are subtle.
13:52 Because when you're subtle with those shots, you make someone just miss.
13:55 They think they're going to hit you, they overcommit, and then you have the opportunity to counter.
13:59 >> Smothering the punches of Gala against the ropes.
14:07 This is where the reach advantage becomes a disadvantage.
14:10 >> And I think this is a good time for Merriweather to start staying in front and letting those punches go.
14:15 Plant your feet a little bit. >> Yeah.
14:17 >> You've got the timing of your opponent.
14:19 You're getting-- or you're seeing the shots. You're getting in between.
14:22 >> Yeah, and that's where I think the 19-year-old has to maybe mature a little bit more.
14:27 I think he'll learn that with a little bit more experience and a little bit more fights in the ring and get those rounds in there.
14:35 >> And one thing about his career, and we talked about 19, doesn't have all the knockout power in the world.
14:39 He's getting rounds, right? And we're seeing him develop round after round.
14:42 He's not wringing off five, six first-round knockouts.

14:48 >> Nice right hand, blocked well by Merriweather.

15:17 Chris, it's one of those moments where you go, "Hey, what did you come here to do?" in the corner, right?

15:23 What strategy did you plan to follow?
15:25 >> I don't think he has an answer. That's what I'm seeing.

15:37 >> So far, the song has remained the same through four rounds.
15:41 It's the technical brilliance of Robert Merriweather III on display again.
15:46 >> Yeah, the rounds are starting to look more and more similar as they wear on.
15:49 You know, it's Gallo trying, but not really having a game plan, a lot of wasted movement, throwing punches that Merriweather is seeing from a mile away, making him miss, making him pay, countering well.
15:58 Last round, though, we saw a little bit of this.
16:00 We had Merriweather actually pin Gallo on the ropes for a few and threw some shots.
16:04 I think he should do more of that.
16:05 He seems like he's physically strong enough to be in the inside with Gallo.
16:08 He's getting himself in a good position so he has that strength, and he can do more damage that way.
16:12 >> So far, for the 6-foot Gallo to generate power up against the ropes, so far hasn't shown a lot of inside fighting ability.
16:21 >> That's one thing. Generally, taller fighters aren't the best in fighters, unless your name is Diego Corrales, but most of the time, the taller man wants to be on the outside, use that length.
16:33 >> Riddick Bowe, pretty good inside fighter for heavyweight, for his size.
16:36 >> That's a great point. >> Not a lot of them.
16:37 >> He's also taller and getting out jabbed here.
16:40 I think Merriweather could be a little busier on the jab, but the fact that Gallo is not jabbing is even more of a problem for me.
16:48 >> Paulie, what do we always say in fighting? If I had your build, I'd be undefeated.
16:52 >> He's 6-foot and I throw him the jab, right?
16:54 >> Yeah, real shame. And even when he throws it, it's almost like he doesn't know how to throw it.
16:58 He doesn't practice it because he oversteps when he throws it.
17:00 There, I don't know what that was, but he could have just used the jab instead of complicating his life.
17:03 >> That actually might have landed if it was a jab, a straight punch.
17:06 >> A little for the leaping left hook.
17:08 >> Off balance.
17:09 >> You see the difference in footwork as well.
17:11 >> When you're still in your first 5-10 fights, you definitely get your veritable cast of characters out there.
17:17 They get here in various ways. However, Gallo got the 5-0.
17:21 >> Yeah, but it's certainly interesting to me.
17:24 A lot of people have trouble with this build, with this style, with what you keep saying, Paulie, the awkwardness of Lopez Gallo.
17:31 >> Absolutely, and one of the reasons he looks so bad is because he's in with such good quality.
17:36 I got him. That's a great point, Jimmy.
17:38 It's not just that he looks bad, but it's also Meriwether's class in there right now that's also making Gallo look more ridiculous.
17:45 >> Maybe if Gallo started landing something, he'd build off of some contact, but he's been hitting air all night long.
17:51 >> Only jab there. At least he tried it. Not a very good one, but he tried it.
17:54 >> He's certainly trying. We're not going to take any of that away from him at all.
17:57 Right hands from Meriwether have been landing pretty solid this round.
18:02 Nice, sharp counters.
18:05 >> Yeah, the landing percentage and power has been one-sided to say the least in favor of Meriwether.
18:11 >> You know what I'm noticing about Meriwether? He's a counterpuncher.
18:14 He prefers to let you lead and counter.
18:18 He's got a very good jab, but he doesn't build off of it.
18:21 He kind of uses it to set the line in the sand and look to counter for you.
18:25 There he starts to throw his hand, too.
18:27 See, this is what I wanted to see more from Meriwether.
18:29 Now he's starting to walk him down. Now he's starting to throw combinations.
18:31 Now he's starting to keep the pressure on.
18:33 And you see now, blood from the nose of Gallo. His mouth is open. He's breathing heavy.
18:37 >> Yeah, I think Meriwether's starting to see that he's superior.
18:40 Maybe step on the gas a little bit.
18:44 >> Ooh, good counter there.
18:45 >> Turning south for him.
18:47 >> I can see a little power in Gallo, though.
18:49 The way he throws those punches, he's just missing them.
18:51 They're not really landing on anything.
18:54 >> He's trying now on the inside.
18:56 >> He does have three KOs in his five wins, does Gallo.
18:59 Ooh, nice short shot to the counter there again.

21:18 If he turns those over, finds those knuckles, my coach used to say getting in touch with your knuckles in the gym
21:23 so you can land them in the fight makes a big difference in terms of delivering power and doing damage.

21:42 >> Also taking the center of the ring as he has done against the taller, rangier fighter throughout this fight.

21:48 >> He has dared Lopez Gallo to come in and take the center, and Lopez Gallo hasn't been able to do it.
21:53 >> Having said that, though, I still think Meriwether also leaves a lot of dead space where he could be jamming,
21:57 he could be showing more control here.
