Holidays: How to save money when booking and while abroad

Have you booked a holiday this year - and just how much are you planning to spend?

00:09 If you're traveling alone or with a friend or a partner, that can be easier because you

00:14 can go on the spur of the moment.

00:16 But always booking in advance, particularly if you're booking with families.

00:20 Do your research.

00:21 There's lots of comparison sites.

00:23 But also, look at the tour operators that package like we do because there are a lot

00:28 of inclusions and once you bundle those inclusions together, it can often end up being relatively

00:35 inexpensive way of enjoying the experience of a holiday, having lots of the legwork done

00:42 for you in terms of the organization and the admin that we all hate.

00:46 When you are abroad, do you have any advice for sort of keeping those costs relatively

00:51 reasonable, while still not compromising on having a good time?

00:56 Take Rome or Venice.

00:57 They're not particularly cheap countries, but you can still walk around, see some of

01:03 the most amazing sites in Europe.

01:05 A gelato is not going to set you back more than three or four euros.

01:09 You can get some great food for lunch.

01:11 You don't have to go to St. Mark's Square and get charged eight euros for a coffee.

01:17 You can grab a focaccia from a local deli, sit in St. Mark's Square and watch it.

01:21 So maybe compromise on a few things and you'll still have a great food experience.

01:25 And then maybe splurge out for those things that are going to be once in a lifetime experiences.

01:31 Local transport is another one.

01:32 Quite often it's cheaper to take a local bus or a local train than jumping in a taxi.

01:38 You get to share the experience with local people and often you get to see the city in

01:43 a better way as well.

01:45 So I think it's a bit of compromise.

01:47 Your biggest costs are going to be your accommodation and your airfare or increasingly your train

01:53 fare.

01:54 I think it's a combination of being sort of prudent at times and splurging out at other

01:59 times.
