00:00All right, we're gonna go now to Cannes. We're gonna go find our culture editor,
00:03Eve Jackson, who joins me now live from there. Eve, you're starting with
00:06an iconic actress who's being honored at the festival, Meryl Streep.
00:13That's right. Every year, the festival honors a great figure from the world of film. Meryl
00:19Streep is in Cannes today because she received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening ceremony,
00:2435 years after she first set foot on the red carpet here in Cannes. Now, her career is
00:29momentous. It includes a record 21 Oscar nominations and three Oscar wins. Over six
00:35decades, she's made dramas that many of you will know of, like The Deer Hunter,
00:38the French lieutenant's woman, and Kramer vs. Kramer, as well as family favorites like Mamma
00:43Mia and The Devil Wears Prada. Surprisingly, though, she has only been in Cannes once before,
00:48although she did manage to win the Best Actress that year for 1989's A Cry in the Dark. Together
00:55with Oscar-winning French actress Gillette Binoche, they declared the festival open.
01:10You change the way we look at women in the cinema world,
01:14and also helping us to look at ourselves differently.
01:24I'm so grateful to receive this honor from this great artist and from you all,
01:33because Cannes, okay, Americans, we say Cannes. We think it's fancy to say Cannes, but it's wrong.
01:45This prize is unique in the world of cinema, and I'm very, very honored to receive it.
01:53Thank you. Thank you for this wonderful honor. I do.
02:03I love how in the midst of all the emotion, Meryl Streep takes the time to say Cannes,
02:15and she's right, a perfectionist. I love it. Meryl Streep, Eve, of course, appeared in more
02:20than 70 movies, including one that was directed by this year's jury president, Greta Gerwig. That
02:24was Little Women in 2019. That's right. The director, Greta Gerwig, who made the blockbuster
02:32hit of the year last year, Barbie, is this year's president of the jury, along with eight other
02:38talents from the world of film. She'll decide on which competition films get this year's prizes.
02:44In a news conference, she spoke about how she supports the conversation about Me Too
02:48at this year's in the French film industry that's very present at this year's festival.
02:55I think people in the community of movies telling their stories and trying to change
03:05things for the better is only good. I have seen substantive change in the American film
03:12community, and I think it's important that we continue to expand that conversation. So I think
03:20it's only moving everything in the correct direction to keep those lines of communication open.
03:32Also today there in Cannes, Eve, nine years after Mad Max Fury Road, the Australian director,
03:37screenwriter, and producer George Miller's famous saga is back once again.
03:44The highly anticipated Furiosa, a Mad Max saga, will premiere this evening in the presence
03:50of the director and the cast, led by Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke.
03:55Now the first Mad Man came out in 1979. There have been five episodes in almost five decades.
04:01The latest returns to the origins of Furiosa, who is the new saga heroine. She appeared in
04:07Mad Max Fury Road a few years ago, which was rewarded with several Oscars. Anya Taylor-Joy
04:12plays the young Furiosa trying to return home despite numerous hostile armed gangs,
04:17as Charlie James reports. As a child, my world was forever changed.
04:26After a nine-year wait, the latest installment of the post-apocalyptic Mad Max franchise debuts
04:31on the Quazette. Furiosa, a Mad Max saga, is a prequel to Fury Road and the fifth episode
04:38from visionary director George Miller. My childhood, my mother, I want them back.
04:45Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the title role, previously immortalized by Charlize Theron.
04:51Young Furiosa is the heroine of this hostile, dystopian world where speed and adrenaline are
04:56essential to survival. In Cannes, ahead of the premiere, Taylor-Joy said she developed a
05:01connection to the weapons her character wields. It was a knuckle duster, a pistol, and I guess
05:07a blade all in one, and I fell in love with it. We came up with this whole beautiful story in it,
05:12and that's what George really encourages because you kind of have, it became a real sign of our
05:18relationship and also Furiosa's mental state. Furiosa's arch enemy is a warlord villain
05:24portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. A new character in the saga, Dementus abducts Furiosa as a child.
05:35While the latest Mad Max chapter diverts focus from the road warrior himself,
05:39Furiosa is expected to bring the same level of thrills.
05:43France 24 asked festival goers if an action movie like this belongs at an event like Cannes.
05:49It's very much fitting at a place like this, even if it is not like a sort of
05:53upper crust type drama with Julia Roberts.
05:59I really love the chase scenes, the cars, the deserts. These are really impressive.
06:05Back in 2015, Mad Max Fury Road had a triumphant Cannes premiere.
06:11Furiosa is surely hoping to recreate the same magic.
06:19Mad Max will premiere here at the Cannes Film Festival later on this evening. Join me at 6.30
06:25for all the latest. Looking forward to it, Eve, and if you see Chris Hemsworth, be sure to give
06:29him a kiss for me, okay?
