Surfers Against Sewage Paddle-outs involve local communities coming together to protest in the very space we want to protect – the water. Whether you’re planning to paddle out in the ocean, or protest on the beach, everyone is welcome to join in, in a way that suits them. Let’s stand together against sewage pollution.

00:00 I'm protest lead for Surfers Against Sewage and I don't actually live in Hastings but
00:08 I come here a lot on holiday, I've got a lot of friends down here and people like Barney
00:12 and other friends have been telling me how bad the raw sewage in the sea is and I'm organising
00:16 this protest with Barney to say enough is enough, there's not enough action being taken,
00:21 it's got to start now and we just don't want any more sewage in the sea.
00:25 So what's happening today is it's the Surfers Against Sewage National Paddle Out, so all
00:29 around the country, around coasts, around the UK, people are protesting because here
00:35 with Southern Water it's not everything that it should be by a long shot but that's the
00:38 same with lots of water companies around the entire country so we're just letting people
00:43 know that we're not happy with things and doing that by way of a protest, a protest
00:48 important in this country, good long history of it and therefore we've got people going
00:51 out into the sea in what's called a paddle out where everyone just paddles out, you don't
00:55 have to be a surfer, you could go out on a rubber ring, we've got swimmers coming, paddlers,
01:00 whatever, so lots of different people coming and doing a paddle out just to draw attention
01:04 to the issue because it is an issue and in particular for this town of Hastings.
01:09 We also lost our water two weekends ago for a major event here, Jack in the Green, and
01:13 that was just disastrous for business so there's lots of things that could be improved.
01:18 And more sewage in the town centre last year, that wasn't very nice for anybody so we want
01:23 to end sewage pollution and we want water companies to take action now to stop sewage
01:27 pollution.
01:28 It's affecting residents, it's affecting tourism and it's affecting nature as well, the marine
01:31 life, all of which is really important.
