00:00 Sorry mate. It's alright.
00:02 Hello Salah fans, welcome back to ShropshireStart.com and our end of season Shrewsbury Town Reviews.
00:07 My name is Jonny Durie, I'm here at the Crag Meadow alongside correspondent Oli Westbury.
00:12 And in this video we're going to reflect on the back line.
00:15 It was obviously an up and down and different campaign for Shrewsbury collectively and probably for the defenders as well.
00:20 So we're going to look at the back line and who did well and who maybe didn't.
00:25 In terms of centre-halves, Oli you've obviously had some sort of ever-presence almost.
00:30 Shea Dunkley's played an awful lot of the season, Morgan Feeney.
00:33 And then you've got others who've come in, obviously Joe Anderson came in on loan.
00:36 Tom Flanagan who was sort of bit part for most of the campaign.
00:41 Jason Schreyer, Aaron Pierre who came in as a free agent, obviously unfortunately got injured towards the end of the season.
00:49 So just in terms of those centre-halves, obviously Shea Dunkley leads from the front and is probably the leader standout one.
00:53 But how do you reflect on the players that have played in those positions for some?
00:57 It's been an interesting season from a defensive point of view.
01:00 We've seen them switch from a back five or a back three to a back four in the change of managers.
01:05 And then it kind of ended up, strangely obviously, it ended up being that we've got having an awful lot of centre-backs with only two positions available for them to play in.
01:18 Obviously, Shea Dunkley was pretty good. I think he had a pretty solid season.
01:23 Probably didn't hit the heights that he did in his first season at Shrewsbury, but he was pretty good nonetheless.
01:27 Obviously, Tom Flanagan started the season. He obviously picked up an injury, didn't he?
01:37 So he missed a fair chunk of the campaign.
01:40 You've got Morgan Feeney who was his first season at the club after arriving on a free in the summer from Carlisle.
01:46 He played, I thought he was pretty solid.
01:49 Wasn't outstanding.
01:51 It was probably a six out of ten.
01:53 Probably had a decent season, decent debut season.
01:55 He was nothing quite extraordinary, but wasn't bad either.
01:58 He was just a pretty safe bet on the right side.
02:01 Probably spent a lot of time playing at right back.
02:03 We had Mal Benning who had an excellent start, sorry, who had a poor start to the season, probably a slow start to the season.
02:09 But then really, really, he straps and has now signed a new two-year deal at Crowne Manor.
02:14 So we'll see him again next year.
02:16 So, you know, there's different options, isn't there?
02:19 It felt like there was never a settled back line.
02:21 And the fact that we're talking about so many different names is probably why.
02:24 I mean, obviously Aaron Pierre came in for a little while, for a little period, and then he picked up an injury.
02:29 Obviously, Joe Anderson kind of was out in the dark, wasn't he, when Portmouth first came in?
02:33 And then kind of mysteriously suddenly appeared in the side for the last two games of the year.
02:37 So it really has been one of those seasons where, you know, there's been an awful lot of chopping and changing.
02:43 Perhaps that might have something to do with why Shrewsbury ended up with one of the worst goal differences in the league.
02:48 They weren't watertight at the back.
02:51 Earlier on in the campaign, they did win a lot of games 1-0 by a single-goal margin.
02:55 But, yeah, it's been a tough old slog for Shrewsbury.
03:00 So, yeah, it's been one of them years.
03:04 We saw plenty of goals go into their net and probably got quite a lot of going into the opposition.
03:08 Obviously, you've had players like Joe Anderson who've gone back to their parent clubs, but a couple of names in there, obviously,
03:14 Tamizhi Sugawale, who played a lot at Brightwing, has obviously left the club now, Tom Flanagan as well.
03:19 Was there any surprises in there? Obviously, there was an awful lot of players that were released by TAC.
03:24 But were there any ones that you thought they might have done enough to get a new deal?
03:28 Yeah, I thought that they might have taken a punt on Tamizhi Sugawale. I thought he did enough.
03:34 He wasn't particularly consistent, but at times he really did show that he had the attributes that you'd think might help.
03:41 He had that turn of pace to beat a man.
03:43 Probably didn't quite have the end product that the club would have wanted.
03:47 But I think he was certainly a player that has something.
03:52 And I think he was signed as a squad player. He wasn't signed to be a starter.
03:57 So I feel like it's a shame that we won't get to see him develop.
04:00 Because if he could really fine-tune those skills, then he really could have been a dangerous player.
04:06 Tom Flanagan, probably not so much. Probably no surprise to see him go.
04:10 He's probably not the right side of 30 at Shrewsbury at these days.
04:14 I suppose it was an interesting season for Flanagan, both on and off the field, wasn't it?
04:20 With certain things that he said in the press.
04:24 So it's not a particularly great surprise to see Flanagan go.
04:29 And that's pretty much there, really, in terms of taking that approach.
04:33 Just finally, obviously you mentioned at the top of the conversation,
04:35 Shade Omflet has been offered a new deal.
04:37 If he does depart the club, they are massive shoes to fill at a time when
04:42 shoes would be working to pretty tight plans from the budgetary restrictions.
04:46 Yeah, I mean, obviously he's club captain, isn't he, at the moment?
04:49 He's the town skipper, he's their leader.
04:51 Kind of led by example on the pitch with me.
04:54 So yeah, he will be... He heads everything, doesn't he, Shade Omflet?
04:58 So he will be a big loss if he doesn't take up the terms that the club have offered him.
05:03 So it's one of those situations where we're just going to have to wait and see.
05:07 He's going to see if he's going to accept that offer,
05:09 but for sure he's going to need to get busy in the transfer window if that is the case.
