00:00 Hello, I am Shweta Desai, I am Senior Editor at Outlook Magazine.
00:09 Today is the D-Day of the fifth phase of polling in Mumbai.
00:15 Mumbai is the ground zero of the political turmoil.
00:19 This is the first poll in the city since the Shiv Sena party splintered into two factions,
00:25 one led by Uddhav Thackeray, who is the president of the Shiv Sena founded by Bal Thackeray
00:33 and the second one is the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
00:37 There has been an intense polarization among the Mumbai's communities of Maharashtrians,
00:46 Gujaratis and the Muslims with a majority of the Maharashtrian and the Muslim communities
00:54 of Gujarat, showing support for the Sena Thackeray faction.
00:59 But the Sena Shinde faction has the support of the BJP and the NCP.
01:07 It remains to be seen whether this election will determine which of these two factions
01:15 do the Mumbai Kars trust, whether it's with the Thackerays or with CM Shinde.
01:22 Mumbai has seen traditionally extremely low voter turnout, which has typically been under
01:29 50 percent.
01:30 For the first time in 2019, Mumbai came out to vote in large numbers, taking the polling
01:38 percentage to 55 percent.
01:41 This year, there has been intense heat and dangerously high humidity, up to 70 percent.
01:50 And we can see that Mumbai Kars are turning out in large numbers before the temperatures
01:56 soar even higher post noon.
01:59 But it remains to be seen whether the city, which is home to Bollywood, home to international
02:06 financial and banking corporate houses and some of the richest elites in the country,
02:15 will come out to vote in large numbers or will stay home in the cooler temperatures.
02:23 A lot of offices have given their staff half day or have declared holiday to come out and
02:33 vote today.
02:34 Six in Mumbai city and four outside, which includes Thane, Kalyan, where CM Eknath Shinde's
02:43 son, Dr. Shrikant Shinde is contesting from B1D.
02:48 And then you have Palghar, which extends on the Mumbai's northern side.
02:54 Also, we have Nasik, Dindori and Dhule constituencies together.
03:01 These are 13 seats where voting is taking place today in the fifth phase of the polling.
03:08 Nasik is the onion belt of Maharashtra.
03:15 Here the farmers are extremely angry due to the restrictions placed on exports.
03:21 So it remains to be seen how the voter turnout fares here.
03:26 There have been a lot of protests and demonstrations throughout campaigning with onion farmers
03:32 coming out and pelting onions on various other candidates out for campaigning.
03:39 And with this, we conclude the fifth and the final phase of voting in Maharashtra.
