00:00 In 1975 in Puerto Rico, a farmer saw most of his goats lying lifeless on the ground.
00:08 He got closer and saw that the animals were stiff and had two puncture marks on their
00:12 necks.
00:14 Goats were not the only animals that were hurt.
00:17 Many pigs, cows and geese lost their lives too.
00:21 They all had the same distinctive bite marks on their necks and all had been drained of
00:25 their vital fluids.
00:27 The locals immediately jumped to conclusions and blamed dogs, and the authorities didn't
00:32 bother to do a better investigation and just said dogs had done it without looking for
00:37 any proof.
00:38 A couple of days later, though many more animals were found deceased, among them was a cow
00:44 that had literally been opened and it had a lot of scratches on its head.
00:50 The farmer next door reported that his chickens had been destroyed by something.
00:54 In just a few weeks, the creature took the lives of 90 farm animals.
00:59 After some time, another farmer said that 10 of his goats had been drained, 7 had been
01:04 hurt and 11 were missing.
01:06 This time, the authorities didn't waste any time and started the monster hunt, but
01:12 they had no luck finding the culprit.
01:14 The incident was all over the local newspaper and the beast was named the Vampire of Maca.
01:23 The incident caught the attention of the Agricultural Commission, and scientist Juan Rivera was
01:28 tasked to solve this otherworldly mystery.
01:32 His first suspect was a Puerto Rican boa.
01:34 This non-venomous snake can grow to be a little over 6 feet.
01:38 Still, its diet consists of only small prey.
01:42 It's also very shy of humans and other animals.
01:45 It avoids bigger creatures at all costs.
01:47 You're more likely to see fish climbing trees than this boa taking down a whole cow.
01:53 Near the crime scene, a large cave was discovered, and we all know that weird creatures like
01:58 living in dark, cold caves.
02:00 In the cave, they found some crazy-looking bats.
02:04 As we've seen in movies, bats can turn into vampires, so they must be the culprit!
02:09 But no, bats were as innocent as they could be.
02:13 Their favorite food wasn't cows or goats, it was figs.
02:17 They were peaceful, fruit-eating bats that didn't care about animals.
02:20 Again, the researcher hit a wall.
02:26 Suddenly all the terror stopped in July 1975.
02:30 It seemed like the creature had vanished into thin air, but not for long.
02:35 Two decades later, 62 miles from the previous site, more animals were found.
02:41 A local vet examined them.
02:43 He was terrified to discover that every animal had two precisely cut holes like he had never
02:48 seen before.
02:49 The animals were anemic and looked like they'd passed away recently.
02:53 By the looks of it, the creature's favorite food was goats and that's how it got the
02:57 infamous name we all heard of, chupacabra, which means "the goat sucker".
03:03 Dogs, chickens, rabbits, and other animals were not off the menu.
03:07 In short time, the chupacabra took a thousand farm animals.
03:14 Now this animal had a name, but people still had zero idea about what the chupacabra looked
03:19 like, which was terrifying.
03:22 In Canovanas, Madeline and her mother reported seeing a weird creature that could have been
03:27 the chupacabra.
03:28 They said it had been walking on two legs like a human and resembled a kangaroo.
03:34 They mentioned that the monster also had spikes on the back, no ears, large dark eyes, and
03:39 two holes for a nose.
03:41 It had two arms with three fingers.
03:44 The chupacabra seemed to like Madeline's house because her husband and his co-worker
03:49 found it in the garage.
03:51 They tried to capture it but didn't succeed.
03:54 Madeline later drew a detailed sketch of it.
03:57 Many people saw the sketch and reported seeing a similar creature.
04:01 They claimed it had strong legs and wings and smelled like sulfur.
04:06 Take all these descriptions with a grain of salt.
04:08 If they'd been true, they would have been all over the news.
04:11 But still, keep in mind these descriptions.
04:14 They will be important later in the story.
04:19 In 1976 on some talk show, they talked about the chupacabra, and the show quickly went
04:24 viral.
04:25 Soon, people started reporting having seen a similar creature in Florida and Mexico.
04:31 Many said that the stories were like a unicorn rodeo.
04:34 They were totally made up.
04:36 In Mexico, two skeptical inquiries, Patricia and Mario, laid traps around those farms where
04:41 the chupacabra had allegedly been seen.
04:44 They caught some animals in their traps, but no sign of the goat sucker.
04:48 They only captured wild dogs.
04:51 The police stated that the chupacabra was just a wild dog, not a mythical creature.
04:56 And still, in the next five years, there were numerous sightings of the chupacabra worldwide.
05:05 On the 13th of August of the year 2000, a farmer from Nicaragua found 25 of his sheep
05:10 and 35 of his neighbor's sheep hurt.
05:13 So he decided to take the matter into his own hands.
05:17 One night, he was patiently waiting in the pitch black night for the creature to appear.
05:22 Suddenly, from the corner of his eye, he saw something and managed to hit it.
05:27 The creature passed away.
05:28 Finally, they had proof that the chupacabra was not just a fairy tale.
05:33 It was a big thing!
05:35 Later, the chupacabra was examined by a vet.
05:39 The vet was shocked because he had no idea what the creature was.
05:43 Remember Madeline's description?
05:45 Well, the vet described the animal differently, but his story turned out to be more plausible.
05:51 This chupacabra had large teeth, giant claws, greenish eyes, bat-like skin, and a crest
05:57 sticking out of its back.
05:59 The vet concluded that the animal was some kind of hybrid.
06:03 They thought it was a cross between a wolf and a crocodile, but it sounds like an exaggeration
06:08 and is hard to believe.
06:10 We all know that such a mix is impossible.
06:16 They did some tests on the body at the university in Nicaragua, and the results didn't quite
06:20 deliver what they had expected.
06:23 The animal was a wild dog with mange.
06:26 Mange is an itchy skin disease that causes dogs to lose their hair.
06:30 It's also highly contagious.
06:32 When a dog has mange, their skin becomes scaly and wrinkled.
06:36 When they returned the body, the farmer noticed it wasn't his chupacabra.
06:41 Seven years later, another body was found in Texas.
06:46 Phyllis Cannon returned to her farm and noticed that some of her chickens had passed away.
06:51 All seemed to be anemic.
06:53 Later she saw coyote-looking creatures that didn't have any hair.
06:58 More of her animals were harmed, so she had to set up cameras on her farm.
07:02 But unfortunately, like always, she didn't manage to record anything.
07:07 Surprisingly, she got a call from a local farmer who had found the chupacabra hit by
07:12 a car.
07:13 Later, another body was found much closer to her farm.
07:18 She took some pictures of the animal and soon, those images were all over the internet.
07:24 Phyllis was curious and sent five DNA samples to five different universities.
07:29 The results didn't match any animal in the archives.
07:32 Researchers had no idea what it was, but it wasn't a dog.
07:37 Phyllis still has one animal in her freezer and a taxidermied specimen in her house.
07:45 There are many theories about the chupacabra.
07:48 Some claim that the animal is a genetically modified monkey that escaped the lab.
07:53 Others state that it's some mysterious, otherworldly creature.
07:57 The most consistent hypothesis is that the chupacabra is a mix between a Mexican wolf
08:02 and a coyote with mange.
08:04 Now, do you remember that Phyllis said that she had sent samples to five universities
08:09 and no match had been found?
08:11 Well, it turned out she hadn't been telling the truth.
08:14 At one university, they found that the animal was a mix between a coyote and a Mexican wolf
08:19 and that it had mange.
08:22 Animals with mange are weak and will likely try to hunt farm animals to survive.
08:26 People, when they see something they don't know, tend to exaggerate, which is why all
08:31 witnesses describe the animal differently.
