00:00Doctor Who has never shied away from shocking cliffhangers and plot twists.
00:04Ever since its return in 2005, the show has been keeping fans on the edge of their seats
00:10with unforeseen reveals and shocking and sometimes controversial cliffhangers and plot twists.
00:16For a show as complex and exciting as Doctor Who, complete with space and time travel,
00:23it's not really any surprise that this sci-fi series has mastered the craft of creating
00:28twists to maintain intrigue and generate buzz.
00:32So with that in mind then, I'm Ellie with WhoCulture,
00:35here with the 10 biggest new Who plot twists nobody saw coming.
00:40Number 10, the 11th Doctor is killed.
00:43The sixth season of Doctor Who started off with a bang, quite literally.
00:48In the first 10 minutes of the episode, we see the 11th Doctor killed by a mysterious
00:53astronaut figure that has risen from Lake Silencio, Utah.
00:58It's fair to say that fans were left quite shocked and confused by this,
01:03because there's no way the Doctor can actually die, right?
01:07It's not until a few minutes later that the episode gives us another big twist,
01:11that the Doctor is back, except it's a younger version of himself who has no idea who,
01:15what or why he was sent an invitation to Utah.
01:18River, Amy and Rory spend the remainder of the season keeping his death a secret,
01:22as they were afraid of what he might do if he found out,
01:25since it's been said to be a fixed point in time.
01:28Now, this twist coming at the beginning of the season meant that fans were left
01:32on the edge of their seats for the remainder of the season,
01:35wondering how in the hell the Doctor was going to cheat death.
01:39Number nine, the War Doctor.
01:42Now, Doctor Who's 50th anniversary was fast approaching,
01:45and there was so much speculation as to who would be returning and who wouldn't be returning.
01:51But I don't think anyone expected them to throw a new Doctor into the mix.
01:56When the show came back in 2005, it shocked many fans that the Doctor's home planet,
02:02Gallifrey, was gone due to the time war between the Time Lords and the Daleks.
02:06And it was even greater shock when we found out that the Doctor was the one
02:10who killed all the Time Lords, and he is the only one left.
02:13Now, we all assumed it was the 8th Doctor who fought in the time war,
02:17as when we are introduced to Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor,
02:20he's shown to be seeing his face for the first time, hinting that he was wounded in the war.
02:25No one expected there to be another Doctor in between these two.
02:29But we were all proved wrong in the closing moments of the season 7 finale,
02:33The Name of the Doctor, when we were introduced to John Hurt as the War Doctor.
02:39Number eight, What's Inside the Sphere?
02:41Series 2's brilliant two-part finale left fans in a sea of emotions,
02:47as no one expected two of the Doctor's greatest foes to go head-to-head in one epic battle.
02:55Now, before the episode aired, fans knew that the Cybermen were going to be returning.
03:00But the return of the Daleks was kept a secret
03:04right up until the reveal at the end of Army of Ghosts.
03:08As the Cybermen commenced their takeover of the world,
03:11there was an increased interest in what the Sphere was that came through with the Cybermen.
03:16Scientists at Torchwood Institute couldn't understand how there were no readings coming
03:20off of it as it was existing, but all the signs pointed that it shouldn't.
03:25The Doctor questions the Cybermen about the Sphere,
03:27which is when the Cybermen admit they don't know anything about the object,
03:31but merely followed it through the void to travel into an alternate universe.
03:35The twist came when the Sphere decided to open,
03:38with four Daleks flying out immediately ready to kill anything that got in their way.
03:44Number seven, Amy Pond is a ganger.
03:47Now, series six is full of twists and turns around every single corner.
03:52And if you didn't know already, it's my favorite series.
03:56So aside from the Doctor being killed at the beginning of the series,
03:59and that other big bombshell that's dropped in the middle of the series,
04:03but we'll get to that one later, another shocking and quite important revelation
04:08is that Amy has been a flesh duplicate the entire time she's been traveling
04:13with the Doctor and Rory throughout the beginning half of the series.
04:17In reality, Amy was taken to Demon's Run by Madam Kevarian
04:22in order for Kevarian to watch over the pregnant Pond and eventually take the child as her own,
04:27with the plan of this offspring later killing the Doctor.
04:30Now, the scene of seeing Amy waking up to find herself heavily pregnant
04:34and about to give birth was truly chilling.
04:37But this twist did answer a lot of questions that had emerged
04:41during the first half of the series,
04:43such as why Amy kept seeing the mysterious woman through the hatch,
04:48and why she told the Doctor she was pregnant and then said she wasn't
04:51and kind of backtracked a little bit,
04:53and more importantly, why the TARDIS scanner
04:55couldn't determine whether she was or was not pregnant.
04:59Number six, Captain Jack Harkness is the face of Bo.
05:03The face of Bo, they called me.
05:04That one line changed everything fans had seen in series one, two, and three.
05:10So technically then, we meet Jack Harkness twice in series one.
05:14The face of Bo was first introduced in The End of the World,
05:17and Captain Jack Harkness was introduced in The Empty Child.
05:21Originally, the face of Bo had a small role,
05:23which gradually got somewhat bigger until his death in series three's gridlock,
05:28when he tells the Doctor his last four words,
05:31you are not alone.
05:33Although the final words were seemingly forgotten by fans
05:36until the Professor Yana master reveal,
05:40and many wondered how the face of Bo knew that the Doctor wasn't the last of his kind.
05:44So the face of Bo has mentioned that he's lived a long time,
05:47and I think at the time, lots of fans just assumed
05:50that he'd heard it through the grapevine,
05:52that there was another time Lord Knocking About.
05:54It's not until Captain Jack Harkness innocently states
05:58that he was named the face of Bo in the Beauchamp Peninsula,
06:01where he grew up,
06:02and then it all seemed to make sense
06:04how the face of Bo knew so much about the Doctor
06:08and the secret of Professor Yana,
06:10because Jack had been through all that with the Doctor,
06:13so he actually witnessed it firsthand.
06:15Number five, Clara Oswald is a Dalek.
06:18Clara Oswald was introduced to Doctor Who in a very unique way.
06:22Now during Asylum of the Daleks,
06:24we see Oswin Oswald living day-to-day life
06:26whilst trapped on the Dalek Asylum
06:29after crash landing there three years prior.
06:32She befriends and communicates with both the Doctor
06:34and Rory through the Asylum's communication system,
06:37giving the Doctor instructions on how to slow down the Daleks,
06:40blow them up if necessary,
06:42and where to go to find her.
06:43But throughout the episode,
06:45the Doctor does seem to keep questioning
06:47how she's managed to survive for so long,
06:49and also where she gets the milk from
06:52to make the numerous soufflés
06:54that she seems to make on a daily basis.
06:56Things take a tragic turn
06:57when it's revealed that Oswin never escaped from the Daleks,
07:01but was turned into one herself.
07:03The Doctor explains how the truth
07:05was too much for her to handle,
07:06and that she created a world inside her head
07:09where she escaped and was waiting for someone
07:11to come and rescue her.
07:12Finally accepting what had happened to her,
07:15Oswin still decides to help the Doctor
07:17by wiping all memories from the Daleks
07:19regarding the Doctor,
07:20and helping him and his companions
07:22find their way back to the TARDIS.
07:24Number four, Rose Tyler is the Bad Wolf.
07:27During series one,
07:29the same two words seem to be following
07:32the Night's Doctor and Rose
07:33throughout time and space,
07:35Bad Wolf.
07:37Even the Doctor mentions in Boomtown
07:39that those two words have been constant
07:41throughout their time together.
07:42And although the phrase had no meaning to the Doctor,
07:45it still worried him as he found it strange
07:47that the same two words
07:48kept popping up everywhere they went.
07:50And it turns out that it was Rose
07:52sending a message to herself this whole time
07:55so that she could save the Doctor
07:57when the time was right.
07:58In the series finale,
08:00the Doctor and Rose were forced
08:01to face an army of Daleks,
08:03including the Emperor Dalek,
08:05a battle which overwhelmed the Doctor
08:07as he didn't want to become a killer
08:08like his enemies were.
08:10In a last ditch effort to save the Doctor,
08:12Rose looks into the TARDIS's time vortex
08:15and possesses the power of the Bad Wolf,
08:18allowing her to defeat the entire Dalek fleet,
08:21save Jack Harkness,
08:22and also create a paradox
08:24by interfering with her own past
08:26of placing the message everywhere she went.
08:28Number three, Professor Yana is the Master.
08:31The Master has always been a big part
08:34of the Doctor's life,
08:35constantly causing chaos whenever he can.
08:37So when the show came back in 2005,
08:40the showrunners introduced
08:41a lot of new monsters and aliens
08:43because they wanted to keep it new and fresh.
08:46But Who fans always knew
08:48that the Doctor's frenemy
08:49just had to turn up at some point.
08:52The last Doctor Who fan saw of the Master,
08:54he had fallen into the Eye of Harmony
08:57and was trapped.
08:57Now we never knew how he got out,
08:59but many fans were happy
09:00that the Master was back
09:02to cause chaos and distraction
09:04in the Doctor's life.
09:05Utopia seemed to be a simple episode
09:07showing the last of humanity
09:09on their way to the planet Utopia
09:11in the hopes of living a better life.
09:13It's not until the kind old man,
09:14Professor Yana,
09:15reveals that he has a fob watch
09:17that's very similar to that
09:19which the Doctor used to turn himself human
09:21that the penny starts to drop.
09:23When Yana recovers his memories from the watch,
09:26his true identity is revealed to be the Master.
09:29A reveal which not only shocked viewers watching,
09:32but the Doctor himself
09:34as he believed he was the last of the Time Lords.
09:37And it's revealed that the Master
09:38has been amongst the Doctor
09:39all throughout Series 3
09:41as he claims to be named Harold Saxon,
09:44the man who then became
09:46Prime Minister of Great Britain.
09:48Number two, River Song
09:50revealed to be Amy and Rory's daughter.
09:53Since her introduction in Series 4's
09:55Silence in the Library,
09:56River Song has been a very important part
09:58of the Doctor's life.
10:00While it was heavily speculated
10:02and then later revealed
10:03that she was indeed the Doctor's wife,
10:05the twist that nobody saw coming
10:08is that River Song is also
10:10the daughter of Amy and Rory.
10:13Now the mystery of who River Song actually is
10:16is probably one of the longest running mysteries
10:18in Doctor Who
10:19with fans having to wait three years
10:22to find out her true identity.
10:24And if that wasn't enough,
10:25River is also turned into a weapon
10:27to be used against the Doctor
10:29as it's then later revealed
10:31that she is the one inside the astronaut suit
10:33who killed the Doctor
10:34at the beginning of Series 6.
10:36That mind-blowing twist
10:38was felt around the world by fans
10:40and many took to the internet
10:41to express their thoughts and feelings
10:43regarding the twist.
10:44Some were happy, some were confused
10:47and some just found the reveal to be annoying
10:49because I think a lot of people
10:51liked the character as a standalone character
10:53without having any relation to the companions
10:56because it made the Whoniverse seem smaller
10:58than it actually is.
10:59Now as you all know,
11:01I am a very big fan of River Song
11:04and I will defend the character
11:05till my dying breath.
11:08But everyone is entitled
11:10to their own opinions,
11:12even if they're wrong.
11:13Number one, Wilfred Mott knocks four times.
11:17This is the twist
11:19that shocked fans to the core.
11:22In the series special Planet of the Dead,
11:25the Tenth Doctor hears a prophecy
11:27that warns him he will die by a man
11:29who will knock four times
11:31and many suspected that it was the Master
11:33who would be behind this
11:34due to the four-beat drumming
11:36he constantly hears in his head.
11:38But I'll tell you what nobody expected.
11:40Nobody expected Wilfred Mott
11:43to be the man behind the downfall
11:45of the Tenth Doctor.
11:47In an exceptionally emotional scene,
11:49the Doctor briefly believes
11:51he escaped the prophecy
11:52until he hears four knocks
11:55from a now-trapped Wilfred
11:57in a radioactive booth
11:58asking for the Doctor's help
12:00to set him free.
12:01I think what makes this twist
12:03so heartbreaking
12:04is that you can't really be angry
12:06or blame Wilfred
12:07for the death of the Doctor.
12:09You know, he just did
12:10what he thought was right
12:11by saving one of the workers
12:13and innocently thinking
12:14that the Doctor would be able
12:15to get him out.
12:16I mean, he even begs the Doctor
12:18to leave him in there
12:19and save himself,
12:20but the Doctor being the Doctor,
12:22he can't do that
12:23and ultimately chooses
12:24to sacrifice himself
12:25to save Wilfred.
12:26And that concludes our list.
