00:00 Rallying, a form of motorsports like no other.
00:08 It's not just about the fastest car or the most skilled driver.
00:12 It's about the synergy between driver, co-driver, car and the ever-changing road conditions.
00:19 Rallies are time competitions where drivers navigate through a series of stages, which
00:23 are sections of closed roads trying to clock the fastest time.
00:27 These stages can be on gravel, mud, snow or asphalt, making the versatility a key trait
00:32 for any successful rally driver.
00:35 Rally drivers are a special breed.
00:38 They must possess an incredible ability to adapt quickly to different terrains and weather
00:44 conditions, all while maintaining high speeds and precision.
00:48 Communication with the co-driver who provides them with pace notes about the upcoming turns
00:52 and hazards is crucial.
00:54 This partnership is the heartbeat of rally racing, making it as much about teamwork as
00:59 it is about individual skill.
01:01 One, two, three, four, five.
01:13 Go!
01:42 So, this is the rally school where we learn to actually get the best out of ourselves
01:45 and get the best out of the cars that we are in.
01:48 And this is all done by Mr. Chetan Shivram, a huge name in the motorsports industry and
01:55 through his instructors, people who've been training day in and day out underneath him,
02:00 just to give us the best experience and the most wholesome experience of driving a car,
02:07 how it's meant to be driven.
02:08 So let's see what all this rally school has to offer and how much better I get with my
02:14 timings from my first round to my last round.
02:17 So the Chetan Shivram Motorsports Rally School is a two-day event.
02:20 The first day is basically you understanding your limits, understanding the car's limits
02:25 and with slight improvements.
02:27 And day number two, now that's when the real work takes place.
02:31 So Chetan Shivram sir takes down notes of each of the drivers, showing them where they're
02:36 losing out time, where they're doing well and how they can improve.
02:40 Now between each round is where he gives us our inputs, whether our throttle is smooth
02:45 enough, if our pace is good enough, how well we're attacking corners and whether our racing
02:50 lines are up to the mark or whether they are not.
02:53 And racing lines do play an important role even in rallying.
02:56 It's not just circuits where it makes a difference.
02:59 Rally racing has a rich history with its roots stretching back to the early 20th century.
03:06 The sport has evolved significantly over the years with advances in car technology and
03:11 safety.
03:12 Today, the World Rally Championship or the WRC is the pinnacle of rally racing, attracting
03:18 the best drivers and teams from around the globe.
03:22 The championship is a gruelling test of endurance, skill and determination spanning multiple
03:29 countries and terrains.
03:34 So for this rally school, Chetan Shivram has got a Polo, a Volkswagen Polo, completely
03:39 rally spec from Artec Motorsports.
03:42 This car has all the work done to it.
03:44 Now, it is the perfect car to learn how to rally in because it's a very light car, it's
03:48 a very flickable car and it comes with all the modifications required to compete in the
03:53 actual INRC, the Indian National Rally Championship.
03:57 So now who is Mr. Chetan Shivram?
03:58 Well, he is a national champion in rallying, in autocross, not just four wheelers, in two
04:06 wheelers as well.
04:07 He's made a name for himself, a huge name for himself and he is probably one of the
04:12 most respected names in the motorsports industry in India.
04:16 So now Chetan Shivram has been doing rally schools for the last 15-16 years, since 2007.
04:35 But in the last few years, he's got a much better structure to it, he's got it much more
04:39 organised and he's hosting this much more frequently.
04:42 So he's having two rally schools a month, a level one rally school and the level two
04:46 rally schools happen either every month or once every three months.
04:51 So the level one rally school is just to learn your basics, to just tighten up all your loose
04:55 ends and to just get a little better and to improve your times.
04:58 Now the level two rally school is when you want to get professional, where you really
05:02 want to start competing against the best of the best and those guys.
05:06 Now in the level two, we learn a lot more advanced techniques such as handbrake turn,
05:10 high foot braking and a whole lot of other skills.
05:12 Now in the level one is basically your car control, throttle control, braking control,
05:17 you really aren't using your handbrake much, it's just about how to understand the balance
05:21 of the car, how to understand how the car will react on a different surface.
05:26 Now you and I are used to driving on city roads, on tarmac.
05:30 On tarmac, we don't see the car sliding around a lot, whereas on dirt, even at 30 km/hr or
05:36 40 km/hr, the car really moves around, it really goes off, it really starts sliding.
05:44 Now how to correct that, how to avoid that, that's what we learn in the level one training school.
05:48 So now what we'll do is, we'll go speak to some of the other people who are taking part
05:53 in the level one training school and find out what their experience was and what they
05:57 hope to achieve by the end of this training school.
06:00 Also, we'll have a small bite with Mr. Chetan Shivram sir himself to understand what his
06:06 goal was to start the rallying school and what he aims to achieve from this school.
06:11 With a career that spans over a quarter of a century, Chetan Shivram has left an indelible
06:17 mark on the Indian motorsport landscape.
06:20 From clinching titles in the Indian National Autocross Championship to dominating the Indian
06:25 National Rally Championship, Shivram's journey has been nothing short of spectacular.
06:29 But Shivram's passion isn't confined to just competing.
06:32 In 2007, he founded the Chetan Shivram Rally School, a cradle for the next generation of
06:38 motorsport talent.
06:40 With 17 years of experience as an instructor, Shivram has been instrumental in shaping the
06:45 careers of over 400 students, with a significant number making their mark in the INRC.
06:52 Right now, one third of the complete INRC grid are all Chetan Shivram students.
06:57 [Music]
07:05 So, my name is Chetan Shivram.
07:08 So I was the 2019 Indian National Rally Champion.
07:11 That year was a double victory for us because not only did we win our class which was the
07:17 INRC3, but we also won the overall Indian National Rally Championship.
07:20 I've also been rallying now for the past 25 plus years.
07:25 I started off in go-karting, then went on to bikes and then eventually got into cars
07:30 in 2003.
07:33 So it's 21 years of motorsports in cars.
07:36 And I've also won the Indian National Autocross Championship, as in I've been a champion there.
07:42 And also on the track, I've come second in the MRF Saloon Car Racing Championship as well.
07:48 So I have a huge spectrum of motorsport experience.
07:52 It all started actually back in 2006 when a couple of people, we were doing pretty well
07:57 even back then, so a couple of people kind of requested if I could help them learn.
08:01 And that was the inception of Chetan Shivram Motorsports, because that's when we brought
08:07 in two of our own cars, brought in a couple of people together, hired a place and ran
08:12 a school there.
08:13 And it's now been for a good 18 years.
08:17 We have churned out more than about 400 students so far.
08:21 And we, as of right now, do almost minimum of one rally school a month.
08:27 Each school we only take in eight students.
08:30 And so it's been really good.
08:31 I mean, the demand for motorsports in general has been growing because of the popularity
08:35 of the sport.
08:36 And with that, of course, the interest of people joining the sport a lot.
08:40 And so we get a lot of inquiries.
08:43 In fact, sometimes we have to run two classes a month because of the kind of demand we have.
08:48 That's just the introductory level.
08:49 That's a level one training school where people are interested.
08:52 So they come in here, we give them a feel of the entire thing and then take it to the
08:57 next level where they, you know, participate in events and then we take them to a level
09:01 two.
09:02 So CSM is not only about training, we also run our own events.
09:04 In fact, we are the first people in the world to come up with a franchise based motorsport
09:09 event, which is called the Clash of the Motorclans.
09:13 It's what you would say the IPL of motorsports, right?
09:17 We have 10 team owners.
09:19 They've bought drivers through an auction and they go against each other at one of our
09:24 events.
09:25 In fact, the next event is on the 10th, 11th and 12th of March.
09:29 Sorry, of May.
09:31 And yeah, what our future is, is my goal is always to help people in motorsports.
09:37 And I've been very, very passionate about the sport.
09:39 This is the only thing I do.
09:41 So I would like to bring in as many people as possible.
09:44 Age is not a factor.
09:45 I have kids who are as young as 15, 16 coming to the rally schools and people who are as
09:51 old as about 55, 60 coming to the rally school.
09:54 So there is no age limit.
09:56 If you are interested in the sport, we are there to support you because we didn't have
10:00 the support when, you know, we got into the sport and we just like to take it forward.
10:04 The sport has done a lot for us and we'd like to do a lot back for the sport.
10:09 Hi, I'm Shruti Nagarajan.
10:14 I'm a Chennai-based motorsport athlete.
10:16 I started my career in motorsports back in 2016 with two wheelers and I've been doing
10:21 the Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship.
10:24 And in 2018, in the stock category, ladies, I sealed the runner-up champion as well.
10:30 This is my first rally school with Chetan Sir and I think I'm forever incredibly grateful
10:36 to Chetan because for the amount of support he's providing young athletes coming to rally
10:42 and I'm really looking forward to learning the techniques and implementing them in the
10:46 upcoming events as well.
10:47 So it's definitely slightly different from bikes.
10:50 Bikes feels more personal on track while the techniques, the basic techniques are the same,
10:54 but you still have to get used to the machines.
10:57 So we have events lined up in the coming weeks and in the coming months as well.
11:01 Obviously the goal is to perform better and win trophies, so I hope to do that.
11:04 My name is Saurabh Bhattacharya.
11:09 I'm based out of Bangalore currently.
11:11 I had a passion of cars.
11:14 In childhood, I started driving from class 8 or something.
11:18 And in childhood, we used to drift cars.
11:20 I had a Santa, I used to drift that.
11:22 But after that, never got an opportunity to do something with the cars as crazy as drifting.
11:28 So I got this opportunity, I learned about it on Instagram and I had the time and availability
11:34 and resources, so I thought like why not give it a try.
11:37 And so far, it has been awesome.
11:38 So for me personally, I'm expecting to gain some more understanding about the car control,
11:45 especially on gravel.
11:47 For Star Mach, yes, road cars we drive every day, but when it's loose mud and gravel, it's
11:52 a whole different story.
11:54 So how you control the car in those situations, that's what something I want to gain from this.
11:59 So right now, we are in one of the most difficult sections of the track, a really tight right-hander
12:09 into this sort of S, into a half-eight and another section, a very slippery section.
12:15 So all in all that was the chase on Shivram Motorsports Rally School.
12:19 I hope you guys enjoyed the video.
12:20 Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe.
12:23 My name is Vedant Johari, signing out.
