Urban's acting was frequently praised, particularly his ability to perform a characterless figure. Entertainment Weekly's Darren Franich enjoyed his "credibly wry performance using little more than his gravelly, imitation-[Clint] Eastwood voice—and his chin". Variety's Geoff Berkshire wrote the actor "does a fine job embodying the more mythic qualities of Dredd as an upright law enforcer no lowlife would want to confront".
