00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - Welcome in here on Sports Grid.
00:21 I'm Kevin Walsh with the Game Time Decisions NFL
00:25 Schedule Special.
00:26 We'll have Joe Lisi stop by,
00:28 get his thoughts on some of the key takeaways
00:30 from the NFL Schedule release,
00:32 attempt to answer some important questions
00:35 that the schedule gives us.
00:36 Is there an advantage in the NFC East race
00:39 expected to be had between the Philadelphia Eagles
00:42 and the Dallas Cowboys?
00:44 Is there a date that we could identify
00:46 when Russell Wilson might give up that job to Justin Fields
00:50 if it's going to happen at all?
00:53 Some key rookie schedules.
00:54 We're gonna talk Taylor Williams in just a moment,
00:57 but the only place we could begin
01:00 was with the defending Super Bowl champions.
01:02 It's where the 2024 NFL Schedule starts
01:05 on a Thursday night in Baltimore
01:07 with the Ravens going to Arrowhead
01:09 to play Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
01:13 And you'll see that two and a half point spread there.
01:15 Of course, Kansas City at home will be booked as a favorite,
01:19 but similar to what we saw last year,
01:22 the Chiefs under a field goal in their own building,
01:25 not a rarity, perhaps, anymore.
01:28 Maybe that's due to some off-season questions
01:30 around Rasheed Rice, Hollywood Brown,
01:33 could have a breakout against a former team,
01:36 but a two and a half number,
01:38 stuff that we saw when the Eagles and Bills
01:40 went to Arrowhead,
01:41 short lines and the road team coming out with victories
01:45 against KC.
01:46 Yet, despite all of that,
01:48 they remained the team that took down the Super Bowl.
01:53 When you go through this schedule here,
01:55 I think there's some really interesting spots.
01:57 Playing the Niners off of a bye.
01:59 We're gonna talk the NFC representative
02:02 in that Super Bowl in just a moment.
02:04 A back-end run of this schedule that looks pretty light
02:09 with one really interesting nugget
02:12 around this team's end here.
02:15 That week's 17 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers
02:18 is the Netflix Christmas Wednesday game.
02:22 Kansas City playing on that Wednesday, right?
02:25 Is gonna have some interesting rest now
02:29 because they could rest week 18.
02:31 That team could go Christmas
02:33 and then not play real football.
02:35 What if they have the bye
02:36 for what will feel like forever?
02:39 If anything, maybe that provides us
02:41 just a little bit of certainty on some season long wagers.
02:44 Hey, Mahomes is gonna have to play
02:45 at least a little bit, no matter what,
02:46 in week 18, Travis Kelsey, Isaiah Pacheco,
02:50 just to make sure that they keep fresh legs.
02:53 But the most important part of this schedule,
02:56 it's the very beginning of it
02:58 with bringing in Lamar Jackson
03:00 and Joe Burrow back to back weeks.
03:03 There's three possible options here.
03:05 Two and O, one and one, O and two.
03:08 And all of them will matter massively.
03:11 If the Kansas City Chiefs go two and O to open this season,
03:15 their price to win this conference,
03:17 which is already under four to one,
03:19 might drop underneath plus 200.
03:22 And the Chiefs will be favored in both football games.
03:26 So when we talk value,
03:28 so often people shoot down the board,
03:30 10 to one, 11 to one, 40 to one, whoa, big number.
03:33 But if the Kansas City Chiefs open this year two and O,
03:36 that plus 370 that you'll see out there
03:39 in the market on Kansas City to win the AFC,
03:42 I think goes under plus 200 if they start two and O.
03:46 What if we get one and one?
03:48 Well, you're gonna have a change then in the AFC North
03:50 or a potential change.
03:51 If you look right now,
03:52 the division winner for the AFC North
03:54 has the Ravens as a favorite,
03:55 but Cincinnati not far behind.
03:58 Whichever team gets the win
04:00 will likely be two and O to open this season.
04:04 Baltimore's second game is against Vegas
04:07 and Cincinnati's first game is against New England.
04:11 If either one starts two and O, the other team loses,
04:15 Cincinnati would jump to that favorite
04:16 or Baltimore would extend
04:19 and maybe sit now at even money, minus 105,
04:22 to win that division.
04:23 There will be a shift in the market.
04:27 But what if it's O and two?
04:29 I know it seems impossible
04:30 because you have Andy Reid at home,
04:33 Pat Mahomes at home, and extended rest both games, right?
04:38 I mean, at the end of the day,
04:39 Reid has all the time in the world to prepare for Baltimore.
04:43 And then we'll get a mini buy for Cincinnati.
04:47 But if it's O and two,
04:49 you might get both of these teams to jump the Chiefs.
04:52 We'll see what's going on with Buffalo
04:54 through those two games.
04:55 We'll talk some bill schedule a little bit later.
04:58 Kansas City could be not only no longer the AFC favorite,
05:02 they could have third, fourth, fifth odds.
05:05 If they're O and two,
05:06 it becomes a fascinating start to this season
05:09 with the defending Super Bowl champs.
05:11 Mentioned they play the Niners off a buy.
05:13 And that is just kind of par for the course here
05:16 with this San Fran schedule.
05:18 It looks tough to me on the surface.
05:20 As we go to San Francisco, it begins with the Jets.
05:24 I think it's funny.
05:25 I think it's a circle spot for so many
05:27 that want to bet against Aaron Rodgers and New York.
05:32 This line is dropping from the open,
05:35 which is incredible to say,
05:37 but they posted those six and a halves out there
05:40 when the NFL announced that Rodgers would open the year
05:43 on a Monday night in the Bay.
05:45 But it's now down to five and a half.
05:47 And for me, while the Jets are not on the same tier
05:52 as the Niners, that's not an easy spot.
05:55 It's a great defense that had a lot of success last year
05:58 against top quarterbacks.
05:59 And Brock Purdy at minimum statistically checks that bar.
06:04 And the New York Jets will have Aaron Rodgers,
06:07 you would think, back in the mix.
06:10 Off of that, the Niners will go to Minnesota.
06:12 Yeah, it'll be favored,
06:13 but you're now at a rest disadvantage.
06:15 You go to LA to play the Rams.
06:17 Well, now you're back to back road games here.
06:20 Okay, maybe a little softer at home, New England, Arizona.
06:24 You're likely talking double digit faves in these games.
06:27 But at Seattle, Kansas City, who'll be off a bye.
06:31 Dallas at home, but you just played Kansas City.
06:34 You hit your bye, you go road
06:37 against an NFC South defending champion,
06:39 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
06:41 The hits keep coming.
06:42 Seattle, Green Bay, Buffalo, this is tough.
06:45 The Bears are supposed to be good.
06:47 Rams, Dolphins, Lions, whoa.
06:49 We got a lot of teams with a lot of minus money
06:51 to make the postseason next to their names
06:53 all of a sudden now.
06:54 Realistically, that's what you see
06:56 with this Niner schedule.
06:58 They were not handed a gift here.
06:59 No way, no how.
07:01 Last year, the thought for the Niners
07:03 is they'd be able to flex muscle
07:04 and dominate in the NFC West specifically.
07:08 Seattle, the Rams, the Cardinals, all maybe a bit better.
07:13 Maybe Seattle not as much,
07:14 but certainly the Rams are expected to be better
07:18 from their preseason expectations last year.
07:21 And the Arizona Cardinals were supposed to be
07:22 one of the worst teams in the history of football, right?
07:25 So now, if you get a scrappy Arizona team,
07:29 if you all of a sudden can't dominate
07:32 the back end of your conference,
07:33 well, again, or back under your division,
07:35 the rest of these games look tough.
07:38 Well, I mean, what are your three easiest
07:41 non-division games?
07:42 Okay, the New England game at Minnesota, that's road.
07:46 Where are you going?
07:47 At Tampa, off a bye, that's road.
07:50 Nothing easy here early for San Fran.
07:53 Let's talk a little Chicago Bears.
07:55 I thought it would be appropriate
07:56 to bring up the number one overall pick.
07:59 We know Caleb will start.
08:01 We have maybe some questions around the others,
08:03 probably not, but here's what I absolutely love.
08:06 Look at this schedule.
08:08 Hey, Jaden Daniels, we'll be seeing you.
08:10 Marvin Harrison, we'll be seeing you.
08:13 Drake May, if he's the starter, we'll be seeing you.
08:16 JJ McCarthy, got you twice on the bill.
08:20 That rookie of the year race,
08:23 in a way, it felt like Caleb might have such an edge
08:26 because of the Bears' ability to make a postseason.
08:29 That's the people's expectation with the defense,
08:32 the offensive weapons that they added.
08:34 But we have a lot of head-to-heads here,
08:37 and specifically Caleb Williams,
08:40 playing all of these top rookies,
08:42 and specifically the top quarterbacks.
08:45 I think the circle game, how could it not be though?
08:48 Off a bye in Washington.
08:51 We'll see what the commanders are able to do early season.
08:55 How competitive will that game be expected to be?
08:58 Week eight, well I know one thing,
09:01 is week eight you can guarantee Joe Lisi
09:04 will be on the commanders, plus the points,
09:06 all spread, Jaden Daniels over the passing touchdowns.
09:10 Could be some interesting numbers.
09:12 We're gonna talk to Joe Lisi a little about Jaden Daniels,
09:15 his expectations into the rookie season,
09:17 and the schedule that the commanders were given,
09:19 and also really key in,
09:22 when could Justin Fields take over for Russell Wilson?
09:26 When you look through this Pittsburgh Steelers schedule,
09:29 is there a stretch of football
09:30 where it will be time to move on?
09:32 We look to answer that question here,
09:34 on Sports Grid NFL Schedule Special, Game Time Decisions.
09:38 Game Time Decisions, NFL Schedule Special,
09:42 joined now by Joe Lisi,
09:44 who you will always catch with me
09:45 throughout the football season, college and pro.
09:48 And we know Caleb Williams well,
09:51 we know Jaden Daniels well, Joe.
09:53 Talk a little bit about the Caleb schedule.
09:55 I think it's super interesting that he will play,
09:58 potentially every rookie quarterback.
10:01 With games against New England, Minnesota,
10:03 a little bit later in the year,
10:05 there is no question that Caleb will start for Chicago.
10:09 And it doesn't look like there's any question
10:11 that Jaden Daniels will start for Washington.
10:14 I'm curious what you think
10:16 of the young commanders quarterback,
10:17 and what you saw from the beginning of their schedule,
10:20 and how he could potentially start the season off.
10:23 - Well, I think Jaden Daniels, in my opinion, Kev,
10:26 is the best quarterback in this draft class.
10:29 Nothing against Caleb Williams,
10:31 and what he brings to the table
10:32 in terms of the Chicago Bears.
10:33 But I think Jaden Daniels has the ability
10:36 to elevate Washington to potentially
10:39 an eight or a nine win football team in year number one.
10:42 And the reason why I say that is,
10:43 number one, you look at the offensive scheme
10:45 with Cliff Kingsbury, it's gonna be a wide open attack.
10:48 We're gonna spread them out with Terry McLaurin,
10:51 and those veteran wide receivers.
10:53 And I think Jaden Daniels could deliver the football,
10:55 but if it's not there,
10:56 the ability to break and chain with his legs,
11:00 the ability to take games over
11:02 much the way he did last year for LSU,
11:04 150 yards on the ground against Alabama.
11:08 He single-handedly accumulated 600 total yards
11:11 of offense against Florida.
11:13 I think that's what you can expect
11:15 in terms of year one, hit the ground running.
11:18 And from the schedule perspective, Kev,
11:20 they match up very well against the New York Giants.
11:23 They match up well against the Philadelphia Eagles.
11:26 I know that sounds crazy,
11:27 but they pushed the Philadelphia Eagles
11:30 to the limit in back-to-back games.
11:32 So why can't they potentially maybe steal one of those
11:35 in year number one?
11:36 And not only that,
11:37 you look at some of those teams on that schedule,
11:40 I think there's the potential for an eight win season
11:43 with Dan Quinn at the helm.
11:45 - So I'll tell you, Joe,
11:47 I will dive into these things more the closer we get.
11:51 I don't like to play my futures in May with the NFL,
11:55 but I've been alluding to this
11:56 since we were closing out pro football today,
11:59 that I was going to be interested
12:00 in Washington exceeding expectations,
12:03 which I know will sound ironic
12:04 for how I've talked about Jaden Daniels.
12:08 I think there's always some buy low in the NFC East,
12:10 and Joe, the schedule shines on them.
12:12 Just take the first 10 games.
12:14 If you look, how many of these games
12:17 could we see this team inside four points either direction?
12:21 I think all but two.
12:22 At Cincinnati, at Baltimore,
12:24 if they book those games today,
12:26 I think you're talking touchdown plus spreads.
12:29 But the other eight games
12:30 that we see to open the year for this team,
12:32 at Tampa, the Giants, at Arizona, home against Cleveland,
12:37 home against Carolina, home against the Bears,
12:40 at the Giants, and at Pittsburgh, Joe,
12:42 I'm not saying they're going to win all of them,
12:44 but there are winnable games to open up the year here
12:47 for this commander's group.
12:48 - Yeah, totally agree, Kev.
12:50 They match up well against Arizona.
12:52 They match up well against the New York Giants.
12:55 What do we expect out of Deshaun Watson
12:57 and the Cleveland Browns?
12:58 Let's not forget, Joe Flacco's not there.
13:00 Deshaun Watson does not have a 300-yard game under his belt
13:04 as a starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.
13:06 So if that game gets pushed
13:08 as it relates to pace and tempo,
13:10 and Deshaun Watson has to score potentially 35
13:14 or 38 points to win it,
13:15 I'm not sure he can do it in terms of that offense.
13:18 I need to see it before I believe it.
13:20 So I agree with you.
13:22 Let's not forget as well, Cincinnati,
13:25 as much as I love Joe Burrow,
13:28 they were a little bit inconsistent
13:29 to start the year with Burrow at the helm anyway.
13:32 So they're traditionally slow starters.
13:34 Let's see how this plays out,
13:36 but I do expect Jaden Daniels to be the starter week one,
13:40 but more importantly, hit the ground running.
13:42 I think that offense will be much more explosive
13:44 this season than we saw last year in Washington.
13:47 - Now that 10th game I mentioned
13:50 is against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
13:52 I wonder if there's a chance that that's Jaden Daniels
13:54 against Justin Fields.
13:55 Joe, I know you're interested in Pittsburgh big picture
14:00 because you think Justin Fields can get on the field
14:02 and be their quarterback.
14:04 When you go through this Steelers schedule,
14:06 is there a spot where you go,
14:08 "Okay, I want Justin as the guy by now."
14:12 - I think it's a timeframe, Kev.
14:14 It's not really a particular game,
14:16 but I would say, I want him starting, in my opinion,
14:20 week one against Atlanta
14:22 because I think they can win every one of those four games
14:26 right out of the belt.
14:27 I would say the first month of the season,
14:30 if they're not at least,
14:31 you look at the game against Indianapolis in week four,
14:34 if they're not at least two and two
14:35 or at least three and one, there's a problem there.
14:38 Even though it's Justin Herbert,
14:40 he's got no weapons around him.
14:42 He's got a new head coach in Jim Harbaugh,
14:44 new offensive defensive scheme.
14:46 We had Bo Nixon and Sean Payton.
14:49 I mean, it's a complete rebuild.
14:51 And we know the situation with Kirk Cousins and Atlanta.
14:54 As good as Kirk Cousins' compiled stats
14:57 in terms of a week one assessment
14:59 with six months of preparation,
15:01 I'd much rather have Mike Tomlin than Raheem Morris
15:04 in terms of that breakdown.
15:06 So you cannot tell me Pittsburgh
15:08 cannot start potentially four and oh,
15:10 but I think what gives them that best opportunity
15:14 is Justin Fields, not Russell Wilson.
15:16 - Well, listen, again,
15:18 I'd much rather them play Justin Fields as well.
15:21 I think that would be best for the organization,
15:23 but Russell Wilson is minus a thousand
15:25 to be this team's week one starter.
15:27 So that's what we're looking at.
15:29 Here's the interesting thing.
15:31 At Atlanta, right now we have week one lines.
15:33 It's plus three if you wanted to bet the Steelers.
15:37 The other road games before the bye
15:39 are Denver, Indianapolis, Vegas.
15:42 That's it.
15:43 I don't know if the books think
15:45 any of those teams are better than the Falcons.
15:47 The home games are the Chargers, the Cowboys,
15:51 the Jets, and the Giants.
15:53 Okay, Dallas might lay three in Pittsburgh.
15:56 The point though is, Joe,
15:58 again, there's a lot of winnable football here for Pittsburgh.
16:01 So I wanna know what they need to see from Russell Wilson
16:05 in order to say, you've got the job.
16:08 Is it record or is it performance?
16:11 That's what I think the big question is, Joe.
16:13 - Well, for me, it's record
16:15 and it's the ability to throw for 275 yards per game.
16:19 I mean, that's really what it comes down to
16:21 because they had Mason Rudolph, their third stringer,
16:24 and they still limped into the playoffs last year
16:26 after they beat Baltimore.
16:28 I need to see explosiveness,
16:30 the ability to take a game over with the passing attack.
16:33 And that's why I say week four is the assessment.
16:36 - All right, let's take a look here
16:38 on the other side of this break
16:39 at the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys,
16:42 the Buffalo Bills, and the Cincinnati Bengals,
16:45 perennial Super Bowl contenders too from each conference.
16:48 And if there's any takeaway from those early schedules
16:51 right here on SportsGrid.
16:52 We're live, we're with you right here on SportsGrid,
16:55 Game Time Decisions, NFL Schedule Special,
16:58 Kevin Walsh, Joe Lisi.
17:00 Joe, we put the Eagles and the Cowboys next to one another,
17:04 both plus 120 to win that NFC East.
17:08 I was wondering if that schedule
17:10 separated these teams for you whatsoever,
17:12 because for me, I do not like the Eagles open
17:16 to the schedule.
17:17 In Brazil, I think it's weird, it's one of a kind,
17:19 and I don't know what it looks like coming back home
17:22 on a Monday night against Atlanta.
17:24 It's a lot of rest, but we'll see.
17:26 They'll follow that up by going at New Orleans
17:28 and at Tampa Bay.
17:30 And I know everybody will be like,
17:30 "Oh, come on, they're better than those teams,
17:32 "favorite, favorite."
17:33 It can be tough to win in this league on the road.
17:36 And if the Eagles open this year one and three,
17:39 that's bad, because I know for a fact, Joe,
17:41 that you don't think they have a layup in Brazil
17:43 playing Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.
17:45 - No, I don't believe that in any capacity.
17:48 I think Green Bay could potentially win
17:50 the NFC Championship with Jordan Love
17:52 as the starter in year number two,
17:53 so it's not gonna be easy.
17:55 Gotta give the edge though to Jalen Hurts
17:57 and the Philadelphia offense,
17:59 the experience a little bit more consistent,
18:02 and Jalen Hurts is a winner,
18:03 so that's why the one and a half point spread early on.
18:06 But what's concerning for me, Kev,
18:09 when you just look at the Eagles schedule,
18:11 the last three games of the regular season
18:14 are divisional games, Washington, the Giants, and Dallas.
18:18 With the season on the line,
18:19 that is a cause of concern as well,
18:22 because you're gonna get those teams best shot.
18:25 There is no just like, you know,
18:27 take it off at the end of the regular season.
18:29 So they have LA on there.
18:31 I'm very high on LA and Matt Stafford.
18:34 I mean, look at what they did last year,
18:35 almost knocked out Detroit in terms of the wild card round.
18:39 So that is a very difficult schedule.
18:42 I still give the edge though to the Philadelphia Eagles
18:46 and Sirianni over Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys,
18:50 because again, you're talking about a team
18:52 that has not lived up to expectations.
18:54 At least the Eagles have been to a Super Bowl.
18:56 I think this is a bounce back season.
18:59 Even though the schedule is difficult,
19:01 I think the Eagles do have the inside track.
19:03 - If you take a look at this Buffalo Bills schedule,
19:08 a Josh Allen MVP ticket comes to mind
19:10 just through five games.
19:11 Home against Arizona at Miami,
19:13 home against Jacksonville at Baltimore at Houston.
19:17 There are some marquee games here.
19:19 There are not the best defenses in the world.
19:20 People would say, what about the Ravens?
19:22 But McDonald just left.
19:23 So I have some questions.
19:25 That's it.
19:26 It's a tough stretch to open for Josh Allen, Joe,
19:30 but if they can come out of this gates four and one,
19:32 I think he's the MVP favorite through five weeks.
19:35 - Oh, absolutely.
19:36 And especially with Keon Coleman
19:38 is star rookie wide receiver.
19:41 If he could hit the ground running,
19:43 they have a great opportunity to hand Josh Allen,
19:45 the MVP, you know, trophy.
19:47 I mean, the biggest thing, if you're back in Buffalo,
19:50 not just from the AFC,
19:52 but just in terms of big picture as a Superbowl ticket,
19:55 look at weeks 11 through 15, Kev.
19:58 They faced the Chiefs, the Rams,
20:01 the San Francisco 49ers and the Lions.
20:04 That is unbelievable.
20:05 Potentially four better,
20:07 best teams that have just as good of odds
20:09 to win the Superbowl, right?
20:11 This year.
20:12 So you gotta get through that stretch.
20:14 If you're the Buffalo Bills,
20:15 that is the one stretch that Josh Allen has to prove it,
20:19 put up or shut up.
20:20 We know that he owns the Kansas City Chiefs
20:23 in the regular season, but the Rams, the Lions,
20:26 two NFC contenders are not gonna be easy.
20:28 - Quickly, Joe, as we close this, Joey Silk,
20:32 any thoughts with Cincinnati early?
20:35 - I bet them at seven to one, Kev.
20:37 I believe in Joe Burrow.
20:38 I believe in Jamar Chase.
20:40 And again, you know, if T Higgins is on that roster,
20:43 I think they bounce back in a big way.
20:45 I think Joe Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks,
20:47 not just in the AFC, but all of the NFL.
20:50 And again, I think they start fast, potentially this year.
20:54 First couple of games are not gonna be easy.
20:56 If they can at least split those,
20:58 they have a good opportunity to be, in my opinion,
21:01 be at least six and one or seven and two
21:03 after the first nine weeks of the regular season.
21:06 I think they have a very good chance
21:08 to win the AFC this year.
21:09 - Look, I think the T Higgins stuff is important.
21:14 I think it feels to me like Cincinnati
21:19 is willing to lose him for nothing
21:21 if it means that they have the better chance
21:23 to compete for a Super Bowl this year.
21:26 It then is up to whether or not T Higgins
21:29 is willing to play on a one-year deal.
21:33 And I think that is a very valid question.
21:36 At least, always great to catch up and talk some football.
21:39 It'll be college football and NFL season
21:41 right here on the network before you know it.
21:43 It always is.
21:44 Great stuff, Joe.
21:45 - Yeah, I love the show, Kev.
21:46 Anytime, I can't wait for the season, man.
21:49 The calm before the storm.
21:50 - It will sneak up on us, no doubt.
21:54 Look, with this NFL schedule release,
21:57 you kind of now have all the information
22:01 until we get new information.
22:03 Could a trade shake some things up, right?
22:05 Could a Justin Jefferson hold out?
22:08 And unfortunately, could an injury?
22:09 We'll find out.
22:10 We'll cover you the whole way here on Sports Grid.
22:13 (upbeat music)
22:16 (upbeat music)
22:19 - Using the parlays against one another, right?
22:35 And being able to get a little bit of juice, Kinsig,
22:38 I found to be a little interesting.
22:40 - Believe me, all the rhombuses and parallelograms
22:42 are constantly trying to search
22:44 and find out those things every day.
22:47 It's one of the battles that you, you know,
22:50 as you expand the menu, you encounter new battles.
22:54 - Game time decisions only on Sports Grid.

23:04 It's amazing.
23:04 They're supposed to be the greatest athletes in the world,
23:07 and yet they can't walk and chew gum at the same time
23:10 without getting hurt, for goodness sakes.
23:12 - That trout injury really is a bummer too,
23:14 because people thought he was gonna have a big year.
23:17 And I, look, I don't feel bad for the Angels.
23:19 I don't like Mike Trout in Anaheim.
23:22 I thought he should have left when his contract was up.

24:10 as humanly possible.
