West Ham United’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been charged with misconduct by the FA, for allegations of deliberately being booked in order to alter betting markets. Daniel Wales looks at the charge and the possible outcomes for Paqueta.

00:00West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta was charged with misconduct by the FA last week,
00:06having allegedly picked up several yellow cards in the Premier League between 2022 and
00:1123 in order to affect betting markets. The FA made clear in their charge that Paqueta
00:16picking up these bookings allowed for one or more people to profit from bets on the
00:21matches he was involved in. The midfielder then issued a statement saying that he was
00:25extremely surprised and upset that he has been charged before denying any wrongdoing
00:30and adding that he will look to clear his name. Paqueta had been under investigation
00:35for nine months leading up to the charge and if found guilty it could have a profound effect
00:40on his career. The Athletic reported that in 2022 non-league defender Kylian Isaac was
00:46banned for 10 years for spot fixing, which is the type of charge Paqueta is facing. Paqueta,
00:51West Ham and indeed the Brazil national team will have to wait until the hearing and verdict
00:57which does not currently have a date set.
