Here's the funny story behind the OPM hit "Penge Naman Ako N'yan" by The Itchyworms. That's right! You're finally hearing it from The Itchyworms themselves. You're probably one of those superfans who didn't actively memorize the lyrics, but can sing along to this OPM rock song by heart up to this day. What gives? Doesn't matter right? That's just what happens when kickass OPM artists write music so relatable to so many. And by "relatable" you know we mean oozing with Pinoy sensibilities. How awesome to know the stories behind the songs you rock out on. So here are Jugs Jugueta, Jazz Nicolas, Kelvin Yu, Chino Singson and their friend Quark Henares to tell the tale.

00:00 At the start, the record executives said, "Hey, if..."
00:02 "I'm fat."
00:03 We had a reason for making that song.
00:07 So when they sent me "Penge," I was super excited.
00:11 I remember, you know, we had a lot of really cool ideas.
00:15 It's very conversational, what people are saying.
00:18 "What's the title of the song?" "Penge naman ako 'yan."
00:20 "What's the chorus?" "Penge naman ako 'yan."
00:22 And then after that, I was like, "Okay, that's it. We're not gonna do this again."
00:27 [music]
00:47 What do you always ask for when you're a kid?
00:50 Food?
00:51 [laughs]
00:52 I don't know.
00:54 I ask for snacks at the store.
00:58 We had a reason for making that song.
01:01 At that time, we were looking for a song that could be used by any company for their products.
01:08 We wanted the song to be a beer commercial, but it never happened.
01:13 We were thinking, "Why?"
01:14 "Penge naman 'yan."
01:15 We realized, "Oh, because it's sad."
01:18 So we thought, "Let's make a happy drinking song."
01:22 So that's "Penge naman ako 'yan."
01:24 [music]
01:38 We wanted it to be a hit. It was the first single.
01:42 I guess we can come up with catchy things, catchy melodies.
01:46 Something that you can sing. Like an LSS factor.
01:50 Something that's conversational.
01:53 What's the title of the song? "Penge naman ako 'yan."
01:55 What's the chorus? "Penge naman ako 'yan."
01:57 [music]
02:00 It was directed by Quart Henares.
02:02 "Penge" was not an easy video to shoot because it's a narrative.
02:06 We were friends in college.
02:07 We had a sense of humor.
02:09 We let each other handle it.
02:11 Someone who's a fan and someone who's a friend.
02:14 I'd never been a collaborator with the Itchy Worms themselves.
02:18 So when they sent me "Penge," I was super excited.
02:22 I remember we had a lot of really cool ideas.
02:26 It's funny that he told me,
02:28 "Your concept here is like Rocky montage, training montage."
02:32 My favorite movie is Rocky.
02:34 The Rocky series.
02:36 That's why I wanted to be a boxer before.
02:38 The music video, we did a makeover.
02:41 This was like the foggy rock boom.
02:43 So that was cliche. That was hail. That was sponge cola.
02:46 At the beginning, the record executives said,
02:48 "You're too fat."
02:50 "You're so cute."
02:53 "You're too dark."
02:55 "You're too dark."
02:57 "You're too chubby."
02:59 "You're too chubby."
03:01 "You're too pretty boy."
03:04 "And you, you look too pretty boy."
03:07 What I love about Itchy Worms and Shudad and all the other bands at the time,
03:11 Sugar Free, they really look like a group.
03:15 These are people you can drink at Meryx with.
03:18 These are people that you can...
03:20 It was kind of like a satire or a parody of them
03:23 undergoing a transformation,
03:25 them working out,
03:27 and then in the end,
03:29 just being replaced by foggy boys.
03:32 I hope our humor will be in the video.
03:41 Quark's humor.
03:43 We shot at different locations.
03:45 We shot at my mom's house, I remember.
03:47 Because she has a pole.
03:49 We had Jazz trying to do pole dancing.
03:52 Of course, we had Jazz running along the village.
03:55 Of course, we were caught by the village guards.
03:58 And then I think we even went to Belo
04:01 to shoot Juggs undergoing cosmetic surgery.
04:04 So, but I imagine you're basically shooting a music video
04:08 that's pretty hard to shoot in a day
04:12 considering all the locations,
04:14 considering all the...
04:15 And then you have to shoot another music video after.
04:17 We shot that shoot with another video.
04:21 It was like a 16-hour day.
04:23 We shot those two videos and the "Freak Out, Baby."
04:26 I remember Kelvin telling me,
04:37 "Can you believe we shot two music videos
04:41 in one day?"
04:43 I don't think they'd ever done that.
04:45 And then after that, I was like,
04:47 "Okay, that's it. We're not gonna do this again."
04:50 [laughs]
