00:00 I know people will be looking for romantic Christmas songs.
00:04 So please, Joe, can you come up with a romantic Christmas song?
00:08 So in two days, I came out with a romantic Christmas song.
00:13 I cannot accept the title Father of Christmas because Christmas carols
00:24 have been with us for centuries.
00:26 How old is Silent Night?
00:29 How old is Joy to the World?
00:31 Hark the Herald Angels Sing.
00:33 How old are they?
00:34 You know, so I'm only 76.
00:36 So how can I be King of Christmas Carol?
00:39 The most I will allow myself to be called the little drummer boy
00:44 who heralds the advent of the Christmas season to this country,
00:49 not even to the world, just to our country.
00:52 Because I have been blessed with the success of my songs, my Christmas songs.
00:57 I've been blessed that until today, 31 years later,
01:00 the song is sung by young and old people alike.
01:04 It's a blessing that God has given me, and I'm grateful for it.
01:08 And I'm glad that the song has touched the lives of people in our country.
01:12 But to tell you a very interesting story,
01:14 so we recorded Christmas in Our Hearts Na.
01:17 And when my record producer, Belia Tan, heard it,
01:20 he said, "Joe, you know, the song is beautiful.
01:25 Pero I don't think that radio stations will play this."
01:28 I said, "Why not?"
01:29 I said, "Joe, to be honest, I hope you don't mind,
01:32 but the song sounds like a Christian song, like a spiritual song.
01:38 And, you know, radio stations, they try to shy away from playing Christian music."
01:44 And I said, "Belia, I'm surprised.
01:47 What is Christmas?"
01:49 Christmas is a Christian event, a Christian celebration.
01:54 And Christmas is not about Santa Claus.
01:57 Christmas is not about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
02:01 Wala naman tayong snow dito sa Philippines.
02:05 So Christmas is a celebration of Christ being born in the manger, the child Jesus.
02:12 He says, "Yeah, I know, Joe, pero kasi since you are known as a songwriter, romantic balladeer."
02:19 Beautiful girl, wherever you are.
02:26 I know people will be looking for romantic Christmas songs.
02:31 So please, Joe, can you come up with a romantic Christmas song?
02:35 So I said, "Oh, boy."
02:37 Sige na, Joe, please.
02:38 Okay.
02:40 But then, Joe, we need it right away, ha?
02:42 Kasi ber-bath na.
02:44 We have to release this record soon.
02:48 Please.
02:49 Okay.
02:49 All right.
02:50 So in two days, I came out with a romantic Christmas song.
02:54 And what was the title of that song?
02:56 "A Perfect Christmas."
02:57 Looking through some old photographs, faces and friends.
03:05 I have to first come up with a melody, a melody that is romantic.
03:09 My idea of a perfect Christmas is to spend.
03:15 Then, of course, the challenge was, what do I want to say in this song?
03:20 Do I just say, "I love you every day, but especially on Christmas Day?"
03:25 Corny.
03:27 Should I say, "What do you want for Christmas?
03:30 Do you want a bracelet and necklace?"
03:33 Corny.
03:34 How do I want to spend Christmas?
03:37 My idea of a perfect Christmas is to spend it with you in a party or dinner for two.
03:43 Anywhere.
03:44 Anywhere would do.
03:45 I said, "Great.
03:46 I have that idea already.
03:48 Perfect Christmas."
03:49 A perfect Christmas is when I spend it with you.
03:52 That's what makes Christmas perfect for me.
03:56 When I spend it with you.
03:57 My idea of a perfect Christmas is to spend it with you in a party or dinner for two.
04:12 Anywhere would do.
04:16 What is your favorite line in the song, "A Perfect Christmas?"
04:20 I can't think of a better Christmas than my wish coming true.
04:24 And my wish is that you'd let me spend my whole life with you.
04:34 So it is like a proposal to be my wife and to spend Christmas not only this year,
04:43 but for many, many, many, many, many Christmases to come.
04:48 So I think that's the best line because it solidifies your feelings for the lady.
04:55 At 76 years old, as a grandfather of eight, and my wife and I have been married 51 years,
05:03 my idea of a perfect Christmas is to be united with your families,
05:09 with your children and grandchildren.
05:11 No bad feelings, just happiness, contentment, love, unity.
05:19 That is my perfect Christmas.
05:22 My idea of a perfect Christmas is to spend it with you.
05:31 Hello, this is Hosemarie Chan.
