How Did Mayonnaise Get Their Band Name? | Monty Macalino | OG

How Did Mayonnaise Get Their Band Name? What's the inspiration? OG has the answer, direct from Monty Macalino.

Monty, his love for guitars, and some of his bandmates go way back. And here's one more clip of him sharing more about the band's history and why he chose The Smashing Pumpkins' hit Mayonaise to be their band's name.

Sometimes rising artists miss to pick up a band name that's quite brandable. Not random. Unless of course, they turn something random into something creatively random.

Because who knows. What if their talent gets them a great number of superfans and they reach stardom? Many believe that a band name should be short enough or sound cool enough for merchandise.

But 'Mayonnaise'. Does it sound brandable or random? Here's Monty on their band name without regrets.

Members: Monty Macalino (Vocals/Guitars); Shan Regalado (Drums); Nikki Tirona (Bass/Backing Vocals); Carlo Servano (Lead Guitars/Backing Vocals); Keano Swing (Rhythm Guitars/Backing Vocals)

Mayonnaise is an alternative rock band from Manila, Philippines. The group was originally formed in 2002. They got their jumpstart from winning Red Horse Muziklaban - a nationwide battle of the bands competition in 2004. In November 2020, Mayonnaise released their 8th studio album, "Friends & Family," under an independent record label, YR Music. And in May 2021 dropped the Mayonnaise 18th Anniversary Show Live album. That's almost 2 decades of making records and doing shows. The band is popular for their hits such as Jopay, Bakit Part 2, Tayo Na Lang Dalawa, and Synesthesia to name a few.

00:00 So that's it.
00:01 It's like, "Okay, let's be a band and let's formally announce our name, Mayonnaise."
00:06 Why Mayonnaise?
00:07 Because...
00:08 I've always wanted to be a band since I was a kid.
00:16 I mean, there's something about guitars for me.
00:19 I was inspired right away.
00:20 As early as grade 6, I really wanted to be in a band.
00:24 I was lucky because during my time, which was like middle of the 90s, bands were popular.
00:31 Razorheads were popular, and Vermaya was local.
00:34 Foreign bands were popular, like Nirvana.
00:37 When Kurt Cobain left, Foo Fighters became popular.
00:40 So the supply of music and inspiration was never-ending.
00:45 I wanted to be in a band since grade school, high school.
00:48 When I was in college, I didn't want to study anymore. I just wanted to play.
00:54 I can't say if I was lucky or unlucky that I was surrounded by musicians.
00:59 That's why it was easier to pursue that career.
01:03 I can quit school and just be a musician for the rest of my life.
01:08 ♪ And if I die, remember these lines ♪
01:13 ♪ I'm always here guarding in life ♪
01:19 I had a semi-independent career when I graduated high school.
01:24 My batchmates and my schoolmates knew that I was in a band.
01:28 Even in the village, they knew that if there was a league,
01:34 they needed an intermission. I played guitar, and I carried on.
01:39 So when I was in college, people knew that I was into music, I was into bands.
01:44 I wasn't just playing music, I was also a soloist.
01:47 I was the type of person who would give mixtapes during my time.
01:52 Mixtapes or mixtapes.
01:54 With friends, I would say, "Hey man, I discovered this band, check them out."
01:58 I was that kind of friend at the time.
02:01 That was my passion for drinking.
02:04 And then, because of that, they knew that I was in a band.
02:08 So that's how I got around.
02:12 And then I had a good friend from high school
02:16 who was also in the same college.
02:18 When I was in the college, it was Pagamanica.
02:22 He also had a classmate, Lee Manigas.
02:27 They were both in music production.
02:30 We have a common friend, the three of us.
02:33 Martin Rebong.
02:35 That's where it all started.
02:37 So what we call the "garage band" or just bands,
02:42 became a game because of those people.
02:46 So I think it was in second year college that the Mayonnaise band was formed.
02:51 The first lineup was me, Paga, which is my school friend.
02:55 Then Lee Manigas, Paga's classmate.
02:59 And Sean Regalado, who is also a common friend of ours.
03:02 Martin Rebong, who is also a common friend of mine.
03:05 Paga and Lee.
03:07 So that's how it started.
03:09 "Okay, let's be a band and let's formally announce our name, Mayonnaise."
03:15 Why Mayonnaise?
03:23 Because Smashing Pumpkins has a song called Mayonnaise,
03:26 which is a single N.
03:28 The reason why I used that song is because when I first heard the song,
03:32 it best describes the sound that I wanted to create when I was a kid.
03:36 Which was guitar-based, very noisy guitars,
03:41 drowned with feedback and everything.
03:45 But melodic.
03:47 It still has pop sensibilities.
03:51 [music]
03:53 It just became a carryover.
04:03 Because when I was in high school, that was the name of my band.
04:06 So when Paga, Lee and Sean and I got together,
04:09 I said, "Let's just retain the name instead of changing it."
04:13 Because it was popular.
04:16 There was a sandwich, cheese, it was easy.
04:21 I didn't think that something would happen to us.
04:25 I just thought that we would easily be remembered because of the food.
04:28 So that's why the band's name became Mayonnaise.
04:32 Had I known that something would happen,
04:35 I would have thought of a more hype name.
04:38 But no regrets.
