The Story of Cebuana | Karencitta | OG

Hit-maker Karen Ann "Karencitta" Cabrera opens up more about her as she comfortably gets personal. She talks about her brother, her music, the process of getting there (if you catch the drift), life in Hollywood before her electronic-dance-pop smash hit “Cebuana” took her to fame, and more.

Social media is a bustling and competitive environment for every creative individual. But this Pinay hip-hop artist finally had her breakthrough when “Cebuana” broke the internet in 2017. Because what's not to love about a hit that's extremely danceable and quite sophisticated? If you listen to her music, you know what that means.

And should you need to hear more, check out her other solid hit "BamBamBam" she released in 2019.

Now, you may easily fall to the assumption that they sound like international pop hits but wait for the Cebuano verses.

Her kind of sound screams OPM pride too.

00:00 I've been trying so hard for so many years.
00:04 I was part of that YouTube era,
00:06 uploading covers online,
00:08 hoping for a big hit like Justin Bieber got found on YouTube.
00:11 I was part of that YouTube era.
00:13 But nothing happened.
00:19 So I felt like when radio started playing it,
00:22 that was the moment where you made it.
00:23 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:27 Karencita was my anga, or my childhood nickname,
00:43 that was coined by my brother, Bambam.
00:47 When she was a child, I used to often watch MTV.
00:50 And all of a sudden, out of the blue,
00:52 she would just get up and dance and sing in front of the TV.
00:55 So I'm like, Ms. Karencita, get out of the way.
00:58 I'm busy right now, you know?
01:00 Basically, it just started as a nickname, something
01:03 that I used to tease her with, you know what I mean,
01:05 growing up as a child.
01:07 He always believed that I could be a star one day.
01:12 He would always try to brainwash me when I was seven years old,
01:16 eight years old.
01:17 He would always say, you're going to be a star one day.
01:20 You're going to be called Karencita.
01:21 My brother is my biggest believer until today.
01:26 He is a huge visionary.
01:28 He is my partner through everything.
01:30 He's actually my co-writer.
01:32 He wrote a lot of the lyrics for "Cebuana," for "Love Burn."
01:36 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:39 For most of my songs, actually, for "Cebuana," "Persuasion."
01:45 But obviously, he's behind the scenes.
01:48 And I named the song "Bambam Bam" after my brother,
01:51 Bambam, because it was a way of giving gratitude towards him
01:55 for helping me and supporting me with my career.
01:58 Like, even through my lowest of lows,
02:01 he would still be there and push me.
02:03 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:06 I really looked up to Michael Jackson.
02:09 He's the first artist that I witnessed on TV.
02:13 I would always try to dance in front of the TV
02:15 whenever he would dance.
02:17 When it comes to pop, it's obviously Beyonce.
02:20 When it comes to hip hop, it's Kendrick Lamar, Tupac,
02:23 Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse.
02:27 So I just get a little bit of what
02:29 I learned from each of these artists
02:31 and try to emulate it and put it all together for my artistry
02:35 as Karen Sita.
02:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:40 Before my name really popped off as Karen Sita because of the hit
02:45 songs like "Cebuana," I was living in LA.
02:48 And I did a lot of odd jobs here and there in Hollywood.
02:52 So that would be Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder.
02:56 I did a movie with Taylor Lautner, with Zac Efron.
02:59 I also went to school for acting.
03:01 I really studied the craft for two years.
03:03 And then I started working after that.
03:06 So yeah, I think that's something
03:08 that a lot of my supporters don't know about,
03:11 is that I did a lot of odd jobs in Hollywood before.
03:14 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:18 "Cebuana," I can just recall--
03:22 whenever I get asked that question,
03:24 I can recall the feeling and the environment
03:28 I was in while I was writing that song
03:30 because the whole process was extremely magical.
03:36 It's something that I cannot redo for my other songs.
03:42 But I recall I was in a rented apartment in Los Angeles.
03:48 And I wrote the song.
03:50 I finished recording it in 20 minutes.
03:53 It's the fastest song that I've ever worked on.
03:57 And that's something that I realized with music,
04:00 was that if a song comes easy while writing it,
04:05 then it's a hit.
04:07 It's a sure hit.
04:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:11 I remember the night it reached a million views
04:16 for the first time.
04:17 I guess that was my biggest reach in my whole career.
04:22 I released the music video.
04:24 I slept for a few hours.
04:26 And when I woke up, it was instant.
04:29 It was like a million views, instant, all organic,
04:33 which I did not see coming.
04:35 I was not prepared for as well.
04:37 At the first few hours, it was pretty positive,
04:40 like, whoa, she's representing the Philippines.
04:42 Whoa.
04:43 It was really a big bull.
04:45 But then the bigger the song got, the more eyes
04:49 or the more microscope it felt like.
04:51 So yeah, I was pretty confused because I was very young.
04:55 I wasn't-- like what I said a while ago, I was not prepared.
04:58 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:02 Honestly, I don't think the song changed anything
05:06 about my personality and my attitude.
05:09 But what changed the most or was an adjustment
05:13 would be the opportunities that came into my lap.
05:16 Because back in the day, I would knock on radio stations
05:20 with my brother, Bam Bam, record labels.
05:24 I would submit my CDs.
05:26 And they would all turn me down.
05:28 But when we had that one hit song, "Sibuana,"
05:32 I didn't have to do the chasing anymore.
05:34 They chased me.
05:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:39 I've always wanted to amplify original Pinoy music, OPM,
05:51 amplify that to bring it out to the world
05:54 and not just within our country, our territory.
05:58 And that's why I wanted to bridge the gap, you know,
06:02 infusing my culture, my roots, being a Filipino, being Bisaya.
06:08 Injecting those lyrics into my music was very, very important.
06:12 That was my number one priority before working
06:15 with a new producer.
06:16 I would always ask, are you OK with my goals, with my mission?
06:20 And they're practically fine.
06:22 I'm really blessed to walk into producers
06:26 who are open to that, who make this possible.
06:29 Hey, guys.
06:29 It's Karen Sita.
