This OFW Rents Land in Italy and Earns P100K Selling Vegetables | Buhay Abroad
Imagine looking back to when you ditch your teaching career in the Philippines without regret. And now you're just so grateful for the kind of life you get to embrace abroad. That's the story of Lino Mandigma. And his is another buhay abroad success story you'll surely appreciate.
Lino is a domestic help who earns some Euros per hour in Parma, Italy. And he's proud of it. When he's not cleaning houses and whatnot, he tends his garden that is filled with Philippine veggies. He grows talong, sitaw, patola, upo, kalabasa, mustasa, kamatis, luya, as well as other crops that didn't make it to the Filipino folk song 'Bahay Kubo'. And honestly, the most amazing part must be earning substantial money out of it. But he's too delighted and seems quite fulfilled doing farming. There is more to this side hustle.
Check out his story for how it started and how's it going.

00:00 Because of the many trials and tribulations we went through before coming to Italy,
00:04 it's very difficult to leave your family.
00:06 Because we have so many friends who came to the gardening,
00:09 this is a way for us to reduce sadness and homesickness.
00:14 One day, we will be able to say goodbye.
00:18 I am Lina Mandigmana.
00:20 I have been here in Italy for 22 years.
00:29 I was an elementary teacher in the Philippines.
00:32 When I was teaching,
00:34 I was teaching all day and it was so painful.
00:37 When I got home at night, I had to write a lesson plan.
00:40 I didn't have time to finish my studies.
00:42 I was content here because
00:44 I was tired physically,
00:46 but my mind was not.
00:48 I didn't just come here to Italy.
00:51 It's very difficult.
00:52 You need a lot of money to come here.
00:56 I told myself, "I have a job. Why would I come here?"
00:59 Of course, if our loved ones are leaving us,
01:02 we need to find a way to be together.
01:06 God's mercy is what brought us here.
01:10 So, I am content.
01:11 Even if my job is helpful, what's the problem?
01:13 As long as our job is clean, I am proud of myself.
01:16 Who is the one who aspires to have a better life?
01:20 Everyone.
01:21 First of all, if you are abroad,
01:23 all kinds of jobs will be like that.
01:25 It's not like here.
01:26 Like me, we are paid part-time.
01:30 That's why you need to be healthy.
01:33 This is what they want.
01:35 This is what they want.
01:37 We will do the laundry here.
01:40 This is what they say, "Be brave."
01:45 If you are brave, you will be good.
01:47 You will not lose your job here.
01:49 And another thing,
01:50 this is not just our job.
01:52 I am also a barber here.
01:54 This is our friend who has been with us for a long time.
01:57 Because here in Italy,
01:59 as long as you are discarded,
02:01 you will not have money.
02:02 Why not?
02:03 The best thing about my job here,
02:04 I always say this,
02:06 when my job is outside the garden,
02:09 when I am plucking plants,
02:12 when I am doing the laundry,
02:13 that is the best job I want.
02:15 Because of course, that is what we are used to.
02:17 We have thrown away the trash.
02:19 We will be sweating again.
02:23 We will make a canal here
02:26 to put our fertilizer.
02:31 Before, I was just gardening in a workplace
02:34 that is near their house.
02:36 There are vacancies.
02:37 I was just gardening there.
02:38 They know that I really like it.
02:40 We heard from our friends,
02:42 the women who are also gardening.
02:44 I said, "How is that applied?"
02:46 There are a lot of government agencies
02:49 that really give vacancies and lotteries
02:51 to those who are interested in gardening.
02:54 The rent for a year is cheap.
02:57 If you add it up, it's 30 euros.
03:00 Maybe almost 1,700 pesos.
03:04 Let's say.
03:05 It was just a coincidence,
03:07 when I applied,
03:08 there were a lot of vacancies.
03:10 But what they gave me,
03:13 I said, "It's really very good."
03:15 For us, this is like a garden.
03:17 It's like a garden that was abandoned.
03:20 I said, "No problem.
03:21 As long as I have it,
03:22 it's not a problem."
03:23 The beauty of this is
03:29 that we just pay for the water.
03:31 Because the water here is strong.
03:32 That's what's important
03:33 when we have a farm.
03:42 Good morning to everyone
03:44 who is watching my channel.
03:48 It's a bit sour.
03:52 We got a basket of
03:56 mangoes.
03:58 Grand Filipino.
03:59 We have a signboard here in our garden.
04:02 "Bahay Kubo, Orto de Lino."
04:05 We have four kinds here.
04:07 Sweet potato stalks.
04:09 There's a grapefruit.
04:11 This is bitter melon.
04:13 And this is water spinach.
04:16 The beauty of summer here is
04:19 that the sun sets here
04:20 before 10 in the evening.
04:22 Now, when I go out at 5 or 6,
04:24 I still have a lot of time.
04:26 For gardening,
04:27 the two to three hours in the garden,
04:29 you can do a lot of things.
04:31 We will peel
04:33 our bitter melon.
04:36 This is our string beans.
04:39 This is what we got today.
04:41 A basket.
04:44 We say that we have been planting here for 22 years.
04:47 Not because we've been here for a long time.
04:49 You know everything, right?
04:50 That's why the soil is thick.
04:52 Because there's a winter season here.
04:55 That's why it's necessary
04:56 to have a good soil before winter.
04:58 Because when it's covered
05:00 with snow or ice,
05:03 the soil becomes beautiful.
05:04 The soil is breathable.
05:06 When the ice arrives,
05:08 it's beautiful
05:09 when it's covered
05:11 and the soil is already melted.
05:14 We'll plant bitter melon
05:16 when we're in the Philippines.
05:19 But when I see the bitter melon fruits,
05:25 there are so many.
05:26 Oh my!
05:27 I'm really not tired.
05:28 I really look at it first.
05:30 I visit it first.
05:31 I go around first.
05:32 It's really fun
05:33 when the fruits are beautiful.
05:36 Our bitter melon is really big
05:38 even though it's hot here.
05:41 The number one thing we're going to plant is bitter melon.
05:43 Why?
05:44 Because bitter melon is what the Filipinos
05:46 and our fellow Filipinos
05:48 are always looking for.
05:49 That's why bitter melon is the most special here.
05:51 Squash,
05:52 bitter melon,
05:53 string beans,
05:54 bitter melon,
05:55 bitter melon,
05:56 whatever vegetables.
05:57 A lot of Filipinos
05:58 just want the vegetables
05:59 that are called "dineng-deng"
06:00 or mixed vegetables.
06:03 In terms of planting,
06:04 it's one of our extra income
06:07 during the summer
06:08 because we have a lot of plants.
06:11 We can't eat all of it.
06:13 We give 5 euros for that.
06:15 When I deliver,
06:16 it's a bit far.
06:17 10 euros because we have gas there.
06:20 This is Betty's.
06:22 This is 2 kilos of bitter melon.
06:26 We're going to deliver
06:28 and we'll pack the bitter melon.
06:31 And we'll pack our scooter.
06:34 5 euros,
06:35 let's say,
06:36 for 50 pesos only,
06:37 is clearly 250 pesos.
06:40 Because we have a calendar here,
06:42 I write down who I brought
06:45 and how much I earned.
06:47 We only got almost 2,000 euros.
06:50 More or less 100,000, let's say.
06:52 But it's really, really hard
06:56 because, of course,
06:57 I'm alone when I deliver,
07:00 so it's okay.
07:02 We're happy with the two lives.
07:05 For me,
07:06 it's like I see the work that others do here
07:09 that we won't just rely on our work
07:13 if we can do extra work
07:16 for our income.
07:17 Why not?
07:18 To my friends,
07:20 to my fellow countrymen,
07:21 I hope you'll subscribe to my YouTube channel,
