That's the power of coffee. Even the pandemic that changed our dining experience under the new normal couldn't make people forget about their cup of joe. They either build a business out of it or patronize the new small business owner. Maybe it's just that coffee business is doable, or the caffeine is simply addicting. Either way — kudos to everybody who's keeping the coffee culture alive.

Meet Carl, Maryvan, and Vincent, who are all clueless about running a coffee shop by the way. But who needs a coffe shop if by going mobile you can pop up almost everywhere you like? Sounds fun becuase it is.

Yet, like many small businesses before them, starting out wasn't easy. Especially when they only invested P6,000 for capital and were just selling black coffee.

Fast forward to here and now, the mobile coffee business is thriving. So what gives?

00:00If you start a coffee shop, it's expensive.
00:04We knew that we would start with P10,000, P20,000, P60,000.
00:09We had a goal.
00:11Even a student can do it.
00:16The City Brew started with a group of friends.
00:18It started during the pandemic that was July 2020.
00:22I really like coffee.
00:24Me too, but I'm more into flavored coffee.
00:27We came up with the name The City Brew
00:29because our goal as a team is not just to expand.
00:33It's for different municipalities, cities, provinces,
00:36and of course, to be known here in the Philippines.
00:41Actually, Vince and Mary Van
00:44don't have experience on how to run a business.
00:48I'm the only one who has an idea on how to manage it.
00:51But when it comes to running a cafe,
00:54the three of us don't have an idea.
01:00It was hard for the three of us.
01:03We just released a variant of Cold Brew, which is black.
01:08During our first and second week,
01:12the sales were good, the volume was good,
01:15and our orders were good.
01:17We just offer it online and deliver it.
01:21After two weeks, our sales went down.
01:24In a day, only two people order.
01:27But we came to realize that
01:29there are a lot of people who don't like black coffee.
01:33Not all of our customers like black coffee.
01:36I think that's the point where we should give up.
01:39And then we came up with different flavors,
01:42different recipes that we can add.
01:44And that's when we saw that our business boomed
01:47because there were a lot of people ordering.
01:52On July 2020, when we started,
01:56and after three to five months,
01:58we saw that our business was worth it.
02:01Because our customers' support was amazing.
02:05And not to forget the provincial capital of Ilocos Norte
02:09because they have this project called Buy-In
02:12to help start up businesses here in Ilocos Norte.
02:17I remember that we were jealous
02:19because there were so many people in front of our booth.
02:23And the orders were all coming in at the same time.
02:26It was hard for us to accommodate everyone.
02:28Because of their project, we catered more people.
02:32When we grand launched our mobile cafe,
02:35we saw that there were a lot of people.
02:38And a lot of people PMed our page
02:41asking if we have a franchise.
02:44Because they said that the packaging was good,
02:46the mobile cafe was good, so we set it up.
02:48And at the same time, the product that we serve
02:52is competitive.
02:53It feels good when people give you that kind of feedback.
03:00Our bestsellers right now are
03:02Salted Caramel,
03:03Vanilla Caramel Cream,
03:05and White Mocha.
03:09Now that we've established our market,
03:12we are already serving at least a minimum of 50 cups a day.
03:16On weekends, we can serve up to 100 cups.
03:20On special events, more than 100 cups a day.
03:27When we saw that it was earning,
03:29we wanted to get money for ourselves.
03:32But as a team, we decided to invest it again in our business.
03:37Most especially in the things that the city needs
03:41and in our supplies.
03:43Our goal is to maintain this mobile cafe
03:46that we have with a strong partnership
03:49with Baker's PH.
03:51We want to develop the place that we have now.
03:55And we also want to pop up to different locations
03:59so that our business can be seen and recognized.
04:05Starting a business is not as easy.
04:07It requires a lot of hard work and dedication.
04:11Most especially for me, because I juggle my time
04:14as a student and as a young entrepreneur at the same time.
04:17It's not that easy to earn money.
04:20It's not that easy to start a business.
04:23I grew as a person, and when I see myself
04:27compared to myself before,
04:29I can say that it was all worth it at the end.
04:33You should start a business where you are happy,
04:35where you are comfortable.
04:37Because it's hard to do something
04:39that you are not happy doing.
04:42If you start, you are passionate of what you are doing.
04:46I've learned how to become patient.
04:49If we gave up, we wouldn't be where we are now.
04:52But because we became patient,
04:55it became possible.
04:57It really requires time.
04:59You should know how to manage your time properly.
05:03To those people who want to start their own business,
05:06invest in yourself first.
05:08Find out what your passion is.
05:10If you do this, you will be happy.
05:12Then that's the start.
05:14Start the business you want.
05:16Think of a product
05:18that is feasible and in demand
05:20to the current situation.
05:22If you feel like it's really your time
05:24to start a business,
05:26then don't wait for tomorrow.
05:44And hit the notification bell
05:46to get updates on our latest episodes.
